ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

You do realise that you are doing all the work anyway don't you? All you need now is an excel formula at the bottom that calculates Totals and GST and you have the amount you need to pay? And the timing of payment is pretty much the same every month or quarter - so you just complete the paperwork - that is the fast bit, click on the ATO credit card website, pay your bill, and you are done.

I use the accountant for more than just that though. It's just part of the package so doesn't add much overall. I also have them oversee expenses as I am not 100% on what is allowable etc. I really don't have time to learn and it's something I'm willing to sub out and pay for anyway.

Would be interesting if anybody has a US issued card that credits AA miles and that also does not have a foreign exchange fee included, if they could pay ATO with it to see how it goes and also to check the FOREX RATE that the card issuer use, as may be a convenient way to accumulate miles/ points for programmes other than QF.

cove does!

Perhaps a warning for NAB credit cards.

I paid on NAB Qantas Premium Amex card on 27-Apr via the website and earned points.

A friend paid using a NAB Qantas Amex card (not sure if standard or premium yet) on 02-May via ATO payment phone line and didn't receive points for the ATO transaction.

Not sure if the difference between mine and their was the payment gateway (website v. phone) or whether something changed after 1st May. Although my statement period was until 06-May).

My opinion would be that it was the different payment gateway, interesting aside is the T&C for the Citi Select card state no payments for ATO, but I still get them?

Most of the T&C's say that but they pay on direct transfer to Qantas although I rarely use them these days I put it all through CBA Amex at 1.5pt per $.

As I can't use my Citi card and get points, I have a payment coming up that is over my credit limit on my other cards. My highest limit on the non Citi cards is an ANZ FF Plat Amex (perhaps not the greatest card anymore but I have kept it for just such an occasion).

I know that some of you guys have put cards into credit and then paid. Is there a limit on how much I can put this card into credit? I can't find anything in the T&Cs.

Thanks in advance.

Just wondering as a newb to this sort thing. I inadvertently paid a new cc twice in a 24 hour period and in that 24 hour time bought a car across 3 cards - is this the type of thing that may work?

In many cases you will not be penalized by putting a card into credit which has been my Westpac experience.
You could however pay in two or three tranches and re-load the card every third day to avoid a credit balance.
So if you have a $25,000 bill and say a $10,000 limit you would start about 7 days early and pay $9,000 7 days early, $9,000 4 days early and the final $7,000 on the due date or one day early.
There are ATO charges if you are late and you have allowed for any bank credit card screw ups.
Make sure there is no monthly nor annual points cap on the card before you start.
Many will say the late fees can be reversed by crawling to the fiscal fiend but that probably won't hold if you become an abuser of a few free days idea every time you pay them.

Thanks team. Yes I had thought of making the payment in 4 or 5 payments but then I started to wonder if putting the card into credit would be easier and less work. (I was going to say simpler and fairer; but I am not sure what those terms mean anymore.;))

the ATO have a transaction limit of 50K too. my CC has a $50K limit also, had a BAS that was 70K. paid of the CC to Zero, put the CC $70K into credit, waited for the bank to catch up and then did the ATO Transactions 1X 50K and then the other 1 X20K, on the same day

Bear in mind if it's a personal tax bill, you may not be entitled to claim the cc fee as a tax deduction unless you put the card in credit first. Obviously I'm not giving tax advice etc etc but something worth looking into if relevant to your situation.

You may not be giving advice but on the ATO website you will get very much the same information!

Does anyone know if you can put a woolworths everyday rewards card into credit to pay ATO. I haven't been game to try yet. Gently gently so far.....

Just been reading about Qantas Cash Card and wondering if anyone has used this card to pay ATO bill. Maximum load is $20000 per day, up to $100000 per annum. Load the money through bpay and then pay bill like a credit card.

My experience has been no problems putting a card into credit. However, the maximum payment is only up to the amount of the credit limit, regardless of how far into credit.

Pretty sure I've done that, each payment still limited to the amount of the credit limit.

OK, Thanks. Will still have to do more than one payment in that case.
