ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

OK who broke the ATO site last night and kept it broken today? Now I don't know whether you will be viewed as a hero or a villain. I have xx_,xx_ to pay which is better or worse than x,xx_,xx_.

Thanks serfty I am using two MasterCards for some of this because I can. Never thought about the bypass switch so thanks for that.

Sorry, folks, I don't understand the significance of the last 2 posts. Isn't the gateway posted by serfty 'the' way to pay the ATO on cc? Its the same portal you go through on the ATO business site itself.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he was referring to the business portal being down. One must lodge the paperwork first before one sends them the credit.

You don't need to lodge the paperwork before sending them the payment. It will just put your running balance in credit until the paperwork is lodged.

This is true, although sometimes the ATO can issue involuntary refunds if there is nothing to apply it to.

This is not altogether a bad thing ;)

Hi all, I'm a little confused which which card to use for ato payments. I've tried looking through the threads but not getting anywhere.

i have a Citibank signature card and also a commonwealth diamond MasterCard with Amex card, can I use any of these cards to get reward points?

I just saw the CommBank diamond MasterCard has a double points deal this month, I guess this would be better than using the Amex card if both get reward point?

Cut your citibank signature card. It's no good for ATO.

CBA diamond still good. It's a bit risky with the double point promo as the bonus points will only be posted after February. Who knows if ATO will be awarded with bonus or not? If not, you can't claim for it as all bank's official standing is that no point earn for government charges. But that's just me. You will at least earn 0.625pt/$.

We had a credit in our ATO account for over a year. Can't remember how it got there - completely accidental. Less than $1000. I left there and didn't ask for a refund but on the other hand nothing was done from the other end. Worked out fine as later I had incorrectly applied GST payments.

Your accountant should be able to get it back for you. Took a couple of weeks to process when it happened to me.

Seems similar to my 2-3 occasions.

All was accidental, of course !

Mine was accidental and it was only $2K related to a bit of consulting dabbling I do in retirement. I did my annual BAS statement in July 2014 and it came back saying it was completed and could not be altered - but I hadn't realised that it had failed to transact properly to the ATO because of a glitch. I went ahead and paid it on the Optuspay site.

A month later I got a letter from the ATO saying I'd be getting a refund because my activity statement was in credit, which left me . Then I went overseas for 7 weeks and forgot about it. The money was paid into my nominated bank account, not refunded to my CC.

The matter re-surfaced last week when I got a letter from the ATO saying my activity was overdue, again leaving me . After a call to the ATO, it became evident what had happened - but in the process revealed what can be done...;).

But that adds to the cost of the points transaction, plus at the time you wonder how long you should prudently wait. In the end with 3-4 month lost interest and accountants fees for service it was probably not a good way to collect points.

That's great, I'll use the diamond card, should I use the diamond amex card of the mastercard?
