ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

you get a 3 week extension by lodging online yourself - avoids paying a 3rd party.

Also they appear to be more interested in the lodging of the figures rather than the money -

When you say 3 week extension? is that 3 weeks after July 28th for the April-July Bas?

Where are you guys getting these timings? I self lodged a pty ltd using the portal and was only given til 11 Aug which is 14 days from 28 July.

That's a very handy thing for the future - I hadn't realised you could get an extension by lodging yourself online - I thought you had to be a tax agent. Thanks for the heads-up!
To be clear, the web site indicates two weeks (and not for Q2), but I've been doing three (for the other quarters) since I started online at the beginning. This is for the quarterly BAS.

Also, the ATO are (apparently) far more interested in getting the the numbers in on time over the $$$ bit, although they do want the $$$ (eventually). So the numbers go in and the $$$ a little later. FWIW, I am only talking four figure sums here; they may be more concerned with greater amounts.

This is only anecdotal and should not be considered advice, if you have any queries, you should speak with the ATO and/or your accountant.

Generally if the interest changed by the ATO incurred is less then $50 then it gets written off. So if the amount is not large and it's only late payment for a week or two there should not be any issues.

Just finishing up the HSBC card, a new CBA Platinum AMEX & MC arrived today...from the QF 40,000pt promo..
It looks like the CBA points are worth half a QFF point.. AMEX up to 1.25 QFF pts per $, MC up to 0.5 QFF per $.. if you pay $10 a year to opt into QFF.

I wonder how the maths works out using this card for ATO payments? The earn rates a bit low on the MC side..

I just received a flyer in the mail from Westpac: "Receive 20,000 bonus altitude Points when you pay your bill with your Altitude Black American Express card" Payment of $500 or more, bonus points apply once per card account. Until 31 October 2015. I can't believe they are actually promoting this! Will I get points for the transaction or just the bonus points? It doesn't say. Pity I just made my bas statement a couple of days ago.

If you are going to be putting through a significant spend at the ATO then upgrade to the CBA Diamond Card. Higher annual fee but higher points earned per dollar spent (Amex 1.5 QFF points per $1; MC 0.625 QFF points per $1), and a much larger annual cap on points earned.

Is this targeted offer ?

Even if you have made a payment, just make another one using the same payment details for $500.
It will sit in the ato account to go against the next bill / bas
Or ask them to transfer it back :)

do you earn any points using the westpac Altitude Black mastercard qantas program or is it just on the Altitude Black American Express card on Altitude program?

does anyone know if you top up your anz black ff visa card so that its in credit and use it to pay your bas to the ato will you earn any points? called up anz they said you wont get charged any fees if your account is in credit using your own money but not sure if i would get any points as the ato will process it as a cash advance? at least you avoid the surcharge of 0.42%?

Westpac Black Altitude Amex points cost just under 2 cents each now where you earn 0.75 points at a cost of 1.45%. It works ok as a warehouse to avoid points expiry and if the fee is tax deductible for you then that could help.
With ANZ Black Amex it is paying 1.5 points per dollar so we have two of these in our family now. I just start early on paying ATO whether it is BAS, company tax or personal tax and that has worked for years.

I can confirm this.

I got hit with a $300 fine for "failure to lodge activity statement on time". I paid my BAS on 20 Dec (on time) and posted the Activity Statement. In March, I was notified of the $300 fine. When I queried the fine (and noting that I had paid my BAS before the due date), I was told the Statement was not received by the ATO until 29 December and was not posted to my account till 5 Jan. ATO also told me I should have posted the Statement at least a week before due date and that the ATO doesn't deal in business days, only actual days, so the two days' grace for late lodgement expired on 25 Dec!

My accountant appealed the fine and I then received a "we're letting you off this time...." letter and a withdrawal of the fine.

I did a test payment of $500 ATO on my Westpac Altitude Black Amex and no bonus points on the statement unfortunately. There's a chance it may come later I guess but the bonus column had a big fat zero in it :(

Props to you for giving it a shot Mark3000! Hopefully the points do eventually come through.

Does anyone happen to know whether the NAB Qantas Business Rewards Mastercard earns anything on ATO spend?

Do you submit paper BAS or electronically? I've been late a couple of times, with paper BAS, and have they have mailed me a warning notice to submit early next time. Ever since then, I've used the online portal for BAS/PAYG.
