ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

QCU Visa pays 1/$ and pays ATO. This card will rocket to the top of the pops now CBA has pulled the pin.

I assume that's Qantas credit union platinum visa. Any cap? Compare to ANZ black, which is offering 75000 bonus points and no annual fee for first year, which is better? Maybe apply for ANZ now, and cancel it a year later (by then I bet they would stop paying ATO) then apply QCU.

Yes. We're already going strong with a couple of ANZ black beauties. QCU is the better option for anyone wanting to reduce the CC surcharge or has already taken the ANZ bonus ... no cap + 30,000 sign on bonus.

I have two US credit cards. If you transfer from an Australian citibank account to a US citibank account, there are no fees and I find they give pretty good rates. But as cove says, if the rate goes against you, your dreams are shattered. For me it is not worth the risk for the 0.7 miles per dollar. I mostly use my US cards for online purchases in the US and points purchases when they come along. Given that I can buy points for 2 cents per mile, I can't see how you can justify paying so much for the Australian points when points in programs like American and United are more valuable and can be bought at regular intervals.

I think I have been lucky with the U.S. credit cards as we have not ended up behind on the paying of ATO. I think my net points cost has ended up near zero rather than 0.42% but that may just have been luck on the transactions we completed in the last 2 years.
Others I know have enjoyed the Cit US cards and they are smiling too.
I am not sure if someone who doesn't take the occasional risk, nor does regular international payments should get on board despite AA miles being one of our family favorites.

My QCU CC does not allow more than $10k a day to ATO even though it is a $25k limit. I am not distressed about this and it is a favourite card for household use.

Not sure what you mean by net points cost of zero. Is that because you feel you timed the foreign exchange transactions well?

Yes yoyo it was some beautifully timed funds transfers which can equate to dumb luck. I was lucky enough to have left over US dollars so when I combine raise.com gift cards when we are in the US we are still getting about dollar for dollar despite the $AUD plunge. This will change of course.

Bad news, received a CBA statement today for PLATINUM REWARDS and there is a notice on page 3, FROM 2nd November, ATO WILL NOT EARN ANY POINTS and FF DIRECT CHARGE FEE INCREASING FROM $20 to $30.

Just waiting for DIAMOND statement to see if things are the same for that also.
The card will run hot between now and 2nd Nov?
Does that really only leave ANZ for reasonable earn?

Titanium bladed scissors will cut those cards up nicely but do wait until November 3rd and consider prepaying by a week to get a last hurrah.

...If you transfer from an Australian citibank account to a US citibank account, there are no fees and I find they give pretty good rates...

Can you elaborate on that please? Can I pay my US Citi credit card using my Aussie Citi, say, saving account? And, can this be done online or one needs to call them up?

I haven't paid the credit card directly from here. What you can do is transfer the funds online from a citibank account to your US account. Totally online which is great because citi are useless on the phone. It is very simple, you just set that account up as a payee. Once the funds are in my US account, I pay my credit card bill from that account. I transfer regularly and have an auto payment for the credit card. Also citibank shows you what rate you will get so you can decide not to go ahead if you don't like the rate. Totally free. I am seriously thinking about starting to pay the taxes this way given that my AA and UA points are worth so much more than the Qantas points I will get if I use the QCU visa.

The only reason I have slowed down using Citi US credit cards is because we have enough AA miles in our family accounts.

I have no words ...........:(

Has there been a review done of any of the Business Card offerings that are around at the moment, just noticed that the NAB Qantas Business Card promises UNCAPPED points at 1 per $1.50 spend.
The PDS does not specifically appear to exclude ATO, but does state no points are earned on "Government Charges", can anyone update with current situation re ATO?
Seems that the CBA Business card will pay ATO ( as mentioned upstream) but points are CAPPED (quite low limit).

Base Amex velocity should still work ... Though at 1.45c/point.
Non Qantas HSBC Platinum and Premier cards are uncapped (although at 2:1 conversion - there is currently a 15% bonus Velocity offer).

Buzzard: you mention HSBC is capped - are you referring to just the Qantas version?
Looks like US issued cards are the next frontier but for the falling $A meaning effective earn rate and thus cost per point increasing.
I've recently started the process towards getting a Citi US card. I'll report back in more detail if it works. Should know in another month or so. From what I've been told, prospective limits are small compared to what we get in Australia.

Yes, my HSBC Qantas Platinum card just got capped.
