ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Of course the problem with that Bankwest Platinum card is you can hit the 200,000 cap and you have to figure it out yourself to avoid scoring zero points on some transactions. No bell rings to tell you to file the CC for the rest of the year.

Yep, just found that post again myself a moment ago

Just OS atm checking into AFF over breakfast as you do.
DC MC has been working. Need to point out T&Cs specifically rule it out but been working. Points post 1 month in arrears & no itemized statement. I try to put the bulk of it on my Citi US & just a little bit on DC in case it doesn't pay out.
Just waiting for my next statement to confirm hasn't been tightened after reports of Prestige no longer paying on NSW OSR. Sweating as with shrinking pool did a larger than usual charge on this one. Will report back for those interested once get my statement in a week or so.

The ATO man said I was one of the most polite taxpayers to call him yesterday. I guess those working for the fiscal fiend have been known to cop abusive callers

A little OT but I remember on the show Eddie McGuire hosts (Who Wants to be a Millionaire? I think it is) a contestant said he worked for the ATO; straight away the audience booed him. Had to laugh.

Any reason you use BW Plat rather than Jetstar at 1:1? I got a BW about 6 months ago prior to the announcement to water it down. Thinking of giving it the flick in favour of Jetstar.

I was racing to 200,000 QF points before the reward point enhancement on June 20th with BW Platinum.
I think Jetstar has a points cap of maybe 100,000.

Citibank paid on payroll tax in June so maybe we have been thinking the worst for nothing on state tax payments.
Oh that reminds me, just did some payments last week to SRO for the first time. Better check they've been credited.

Also, how often can you apply for credit limit increase? was it every 6 months strictly?

I am thinking my changes were about every 6 months.
My card limit is enough now that ATO is gone at $100,000 and Mrscove's limit is $60,000.

I am just so excited that we now have 38 payments to the ATO in 2016-2017 for our operating business. NOT!
And now we have half the newly elected politicians thinking a 50% personal tax rate will help the Budget. Actually it won't as the higher the tax rate the less the tax gets paid. My view is we have a spending problem in balancing the Budget so cutting welfare to some of the 50% who are getting it needs to happen sooner rather than later.
We still have CCs that work so I am happy with that.

I agree with you cove, we need to address spending. With rates so low, some much needed infrastructure investment would put some of that welfare money to better economic use.
To get anything through the new senate, the government will need to get the cheque book out to fund all sorts of pet projects.
S&P have now given us a warning we can't say they didn't warn us. If I wanted to live in Southern Europe, I would be there now.
Paying our 50% on CC is a nice little game. I'd much rather spend more of my money myself (eg revenue fares :) )

Accountants alert..... Seeking info....
Mate has a business (himself)..... Worked, earnt but required ATO to issue a payback plan on taxes owed. This year he claims to have earnt more money..... But has put aside money for taxes, but maybe not enough.
How does it work if he is required to pay more taxes then he can afford with the outstanding taxes from last year still to be paid?

request an payment installment. If he pays on time and showing an effort, no drama to make another request to forfeit the interest charge.

Last week I noticed that I had not been given points for ATO tax spend I did in early June on my Macquarie Black CC.

I rang up Macquarie and they told me that ATO spend did not earn points after 11 May.

Going back and reading the email in April from Macquarie notifying me of the changes I noticed that it was a bit ambiguous as to when the cut-off date was. When I first read it
I assumed it was 20 June but on a closer rereading I could see how it could be read as 11 May.

Regardless I lodged a complaint with Macquarie and today they gave me the good news that they would fully credit me with points for ATO spend up to 20 June.

So if you're in the same boat its worth checking your statement and complaining.

Just got new statement - still working - usual provisos with City and be aware of the clear T&Cs & payment method before proceeding with this one.

With the Citi US card it will earn 0.76 AA miles per Australian dollar today based on the exchange rate and because it is a MasterCard the cost is 0.42 cents. The risk is the exchange rates but there is usually enough time to derisk it (unless the Aussie dollar is moving all over the place in a day).

Have received my points and confirmed that ATO work with Qantas Cash debit card .

Howerver at 0.48% to earn 0.5 per $ you looking at almost 1c per points .

Just wrapped up July quarterlies thanks to BW , Q and a bit of two WBC Kris Amex cards. I still have a SMSF quarterly but it has to be done by EFT unless the announced rules change again.
So most was at 0.42% and a bit at 1.45%.

Does anyone have a summary of which cards deliver the best benefits for ATO payments ?

I have a $30-40k CGT bill coming up sometime soon and want to make sure I can get some side benefit out of it if possible. I have a BA Chase Signature Visa from when I lived in the states that provides a 2-for-1 (basically) flight voucher I spend more than $30k on the card in a year, but the downside is that they have to be ex-USA flights, which means we need to get to the USA first and fly BA, which limits the useful destinations. So I'm looking for whatever card has the best earn rate for ATO payments, or any other side benefits for large spends in a single 12 month period.

I could probably get another US-based card if anyone knows any that provide something similar to the Signature Visa.

Well we can have lower personal tax rates if we actually enforce companies that transfer profits offshore to pay they fair share of tax.
