ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I tested it out yesterday and Visa1 now at 0.15%.
I found a HN in Alexandria SYD selling $500 cards, now not selling >$300. Did see a post on the Amex offers thread about a Tassie store selling $1000 cards.

Have only seen these ones at Target before. Have bought them with Coles Myer GCs bought from Myer during Amex Promos.

So bbqwer are you talking about the Harvey Norman giftcard?

BP petrol station. its called vanilla visa gift card, but the fees $7.50 Only buy this when AMEX have BP promotion.

Using amex edge and explorer will earn 2x MR too.

So Harvey Norman don't charge a fee to purchase? Max card value $500 or are there larger cards?

They do ($5.95). Max card value is $300. Most won't find that viable though one could make a case for buying with an Explorer or Business Accelerator.
Many AFFers have them due to an Amex statement credit at HN that more than offest the fee (credit no longer available and expires today)

The recent changes to card rates have been noted. The foreign credit cards are no longer a viable option for ATO. MasterCard change is helpful.Amex is neutral.Visa now costs a bit more.

I did a $500 HN visa today (amex credit) .... they told me the max was $1,000. Thinking about talking to the manager about how he feels getting in 50+ a month.... will cover a little of the monthly bill.

Yes the $300 max applies to the 'vpay' virtual card. The HN mygift physical visa has a higher limit but have been tricky to find recently. My local HN struggled to get $1k to load but were OK with $500-suspect that was a glitch

Vpay virtual visa is $300 max. The physical mygift visa sometimes available in HN has higher loads but HN struggled to make $1k work the only time I tried

FOund new card at BP - $7.50 fees - Bought it today due to BP amex promo expire tomorrow Spend $40, receive $10 credit.

Shame they don't earn BP VFF points as that would make viable long-term

Mrscove is thinking we have a fiscal fiend looking at this thread to have had the ATO cotton on to the US credit cards to make them unworkable for ATO credit card payments.
Meanwhile I am getting ready for our big July quarterlies that never seem to stop.

Note also that lots of HN stores will not let you buy a gift card (or anything similar like a vPay) with an AMEX because of the statement credit/cash back offers that regularly go around.

Why would they care ? What difference does it make to them ?

Another one of these pointless rules made up by the store manager on the spot to stroke their ego")

Surely they already know if a foreign card is used?

I guess someone noticed that the ATO had a 2.7% charge and were only recovering 0.54% from foreign credit cards issued by Visa and MasterCard. I was quite relaxed about it.

What was unworkable was the costs for accepting foreign fees is much higher than the costs for Australian fees, and the new charges reflect those differences. They don't need to read this thread to work that out.

I'd be surprised if they hadn't been looking at this thread at some point!!!

I know this may have been a rhetorical question but to state the obvious they wouldn't be able to apply a different fee for foreign cards if they couldn't work out it was a foreign card!

I don't think the vendor is charged more if the customer has a foreign credit card. That seems too unworkable to be reasonable (eg: how is the vendor supposed to know the customer has a foreign card beforehand ?).
