ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Don't these look like a Visa card rather than an EFTPOS card?

Yeah they do but if you're doing $100 at a time they might get suspicious.

I'm assuming you guys are taking over the counter.

Cos if it's self serve. They will never know unless the system has been changed

Only1 never worked there for that, but are still good via the portal

The only way I know to do this is via a BIN lookup as ATO are doing. I don't want to trivialise this, as I know this isn't necessarily easy but it can be done. Lets face it, plenty of vendors are already differentially surcharging on the basis of Amex vs. Visa/MasterCard, this is essentially the same process albeit to a more granular level.

I was mainly thinking in the context of in-person retail purchases. If J Random Dude walks in off the street to buy something, identifying whether he has a Mastercard/Visa/AMEX/whatever is trivial. Identifying whether his Mastercard/Visa/AMEX/whatever is from a domestic or foreign provider is a different matter entirely.

Obviously foreign cards will be relatively uncommon outside tourist areas, so there's some ability for vendors in those areas to allow for it, but still...

Sure but no one is forced to surcharge at all let alone differentially. For most vendors the occasional purchase doesn't really cause much of a problem with a slightly higher fee, and there is no definitive business case to actually address it. When you have a large number of people doing this or individuals/companies pumping millions plus through the portal it's worth doing something about it, as ATO have.

Does this include only1 gift visa cards?

Yep, its all gift cards.

Though its probably easier to pay the ATO online using the Gift card and the with the new fee structure from ATO a mastercard gift card could be a better option ( I think Coles has a gift mastercard) . I'm currently trying to work out how best to pay them since I have a few bills due.

Have received a deluge of ATO bills to pay this month. I don't think I am ready to do any of them $100 at a time.
Two ATO bills are Division 293 on superannuation contributions....last ones ever so I am a happy little Vegemite.

I wonder how many people were using foreign cards with the ATO?

I certainly enjoyed making a big ATO Payment just before midnight on 30 June with a foreign card at the old lower card fee.

I loved the 0.4% rate today on MasterCard. I used a cobranded Amex too. A dozen payments and it is all done. We are travelling at the end of the month so I did the payments while I was watching the AFL footy this afternoon. Those US credit cards were left in my international wallet.

With the credit card changes Inc anz (which I use re Amex being discontinued) what's everyone's go to every day spend card?
I typically spend 20,00 to 30,000 per month so no limit would be ideal.

A few on this forum!

But seriously, ATO have had a number of serious technology problems in the last few months. Given they have a lot on their (IT) plate they'd only be making these changes if they felt they needed to, that should tell you something.

Can someone help me with the Maths here with the Only1 card.

It seems that I can get this from Aus Post for $500 denomination for $5.95. So, if I use a Visa (1:1) on the ANZ Black upto $7500. I will get 505 QFF points. I don't think Aus Post takes Amex. I think my Westpac Black Amex is 1.25 pts per $.

Then I pay off approximately $499.25 of my tax bill (.15% card fee). So, the overall cost of the payment is $6.70 for 505 QFF points. That comes to 1.3c per point, which sounds expensive.

Prior to June 30, I was using the Westpac Black Mastercard to get 0.625 QFF Points. At 0.54%, a $500 payment would get me 312 pts at a cost of $2.7. This comes to 0.86 c/pt; which was under by aim of 1c / pt.

Is my Maths right? So, without the Amex credit; this does not seem like a good way of paying my tax bill.

I think most who use these gift cards are buying them at supermarkets with a 3pt/$ amex plat edge ( there may be other offers used aswell not sure) . Then the maths starts to work in your favour. 1515 QFF points for $6.70. Amex can be used at post offices....well mine takes it anyway

my amex explorer only gives 0.5pt/$1 now at auspost as its considered govt, but there are some that give the full points.
Not sure which ones though

Auspost you can do amex but it earns less due to govenment charges, Unless if you use AMEX westpac black $1 for 1 point.

It is way better value to buy using amex platinum edge at coles / woolish ( combo with cash rewards 5% ) you cant beat this deal! I am not too sure amex MR have QFF awards or not, I am not a fan of Qantas. Better check it out first.

A lot of extra stuffing around for $100 max card value at the supermarket but the Amex edge 3x point earn might make it worthwhile.
Do any Amex issued cards pay full points at post office?
Do post offices have much stock of these cards?
