ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Anyone have any experience getting the ATO to transfer a credit balance to their bank account?

Pre-paid a debt that I knew I would be up for (FY22 return) using coles gift Mastercards and it’s turned out I owed a couple of K less so have a credit balance sitting there. Likely to be any issue with getting this refunded?

Not sure. I 'accidentally' overpaid BAS and they sent a text saying they would refund to original card in a month--first time this has happened to me as have previously had overpayments go back
within the week directly to bank account. I asked my accountant to contact them to ask to do directly to bank but in meantime my end-of-year income tax notice came through so they just moved the overpayment from BAS to ITA account

Good luck. It seems you got stuck at an interesting time with them shutting credit card payments down.

To be honest I gave up on Beem completely after my missing payment experience. My payments are generally in the low 10s of thousands so $2k at a time was painful and my card didn't work most of the time. Well done to those who stuck with it untill the end generating free points. Onto the next lurk.
Took only one email to BeemIt to make them admit the error on their end. They refunded the missing payment back to my credit card. Great customer service. It's a shame they don't accept prepaid and credit cards anymore.

Thanks for sharing about the prepaid cards too @bader was hoping that would still be ‘alive’. Looks like Beem has been put to bed permanently :(

ipaymy (a bill payment service) is currently offering a one-off fee free payment of up to $50K. Payees include ATO. Their fee is usually 1.25% +GST, so a saving of $687 on $50k. They accept Visa & MC.

The free payment is only available to new users that haven’t previously had an ipaymy account. The promo code is AUFIRST.

Thank you for the heads up.

Why didn’t I check this before paying a huge tax bill?🥴. There’s always the next one! 😊

Is creating multiple ipaymy account feasible (different phone number but same credit card, and bill)

I wonder - might be an interesting idea - until they inevitably catch on. I've been trying to get my first payment through. I have been trying to make my first payment and it's stuck at the last step - they're currently investigating. After I set up my account, I received a $200 discount code in my email. I've been trying to use the AUFIRST code and it seems to be offsetting the higher amount and not rejecting - I wonder if this is why my payment is not going through.

I'll keep the thread updated when I hear back.

I’ve been on the phone to my card issuer westpac. Appears my daily payment limit was too small and have rectified this. Before I try again, has anyone used this service with a westpac credit card and incurred the foreign transaction fee? I ask as these guys are offshore based. I’d hate to get hit with the 3%.

No but assuming if paying in AUD won’t be hit with any conversion fee - I would think not on where they are based but what currency you are charged

I have done that previously and they refunded to a bank account for me
They used the bank account that I had on file with them. Very straight forward - made me consider if you were desperate for points might "accidentally" overpay, pay the small transaction fee and get a refund. I would't rely on this method repeatedly can imagine you would make the ATO shine a spotlight on you - last thing anyone wants

Looks like there is a 10k limit for the first payment promo.

Australia

💸 Get your First Payment Free

New ipaymy users can get their first payment free with the promo code AUFIRST

Terms and Conditions:
  1. The promotion is only valid for customers with an ipaymy account in Australia
  2. The payment must be made with an Australian-issued Visa or Mastercard credit card
  3. The AUFIRST promo code can be redeemed once and is only valid for first-time payments of up to 10,000 AUD

Just circling back on this. I managed to get my payment through. My Westpac card was still blocked - managed to do a smaller payment on another card.

Support told me they decreased it to $10K but they enabled it again as a once off. Looks like the gate is closed on this one. Guess they didn't realise that on $50K, it was a $600 processing fee they were forgoing.

EDIT: Having some buyers' remorse. I usually do much smaller tester payments first on new payment services. Just checking the $$ has got through to the ATO for some of the posters on this thread who have used it?
