ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Thanks again JS, yet another successful points earning morning thanks to the ATO payment portal...

he he, one day I have to call cove's girlfriend and see what that's all about... :p

elderly mother in law who's finances i help to organize and pay all her bills for her has just informed me that she has a $23,000 + Tax bill to pay!!!!!Yes,!!!!! bring it on.

Another round of quarterly company tax + PAYG + BAS bills, another lazy half a million points.... man I love the ATO at the moment. I hope this never stops!!

Has anyone used the Qantas Staff Credit Union Platinum Visa card to pay ATO?

I read the T&C, which states that ineligible transactions include the following:

  • Balance transfers
  • Cash advances
  • Special promotions
  • Purchases of foreign currency or traveller’s cheques
  • Business Expenses
  • BPAY transactions
  • Any fee or charge, including any government charges or duties and any fee or charge for your membership of and participation in the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program

The last dot point would suggest that ATO payments are NOT eligible...<sigh> I was getting all hopeful for a moment...:(

Yes, I was pondering buying $1,490 of hair care (no brand) product from Woolies to take advantage of an easy 100,000 points on offer.....looked in the in-tray and decided it was easier & cheaper to tap a few keys on the keyboard & pay the BAS instead :D

Almost all CCs bar earning points from "government charges" in their T&Cs, but almost none of them enforce this rule. I can't comment personally on the QSCU card as I don't have one, but I'd guess you'll earn points from paying the ATO.

Holly it really gets down to how often you have tax bills to pay and their relative size against other transactions you have in a month as to which card you might use. Folks who pretty much exclusively pay taxes and nothing else each month had Woolies EDR cards cancelled. If you think QSCU might not give you points then you could use an alternative like Citi Business that runs 1.25 QF points on Visa and the AFF forum says they do pay points for ATO payments.

If you can use the points earned to fly up front often you will find that you are achieving something that is in the order of 5 or 6 cents per point value averaged over redemptions against a cost which can range from 0.36 cents a point to 0.83 cents a point.
Now that can give you inspirational thoughts as you pay out 100 cents to the ATO.

I'm in MOURNING....was overseas and family member did not let me know their BAS was due and hence missed paying it for them........doh doh doh!
There goes 10K points :(

I agree - I do not think that a tax bill would constitute a govt charge, as the charge was typically in relation to the purchase made. That would, in theory, cover GST, but I'm not aware of any CC provider trying to break that out.

My interpretation of this was the taxes and duties that used to be incurred on credit card transactions themselves. the old FID and others.

I agree. This has nothing to do with income taxes but relates to FID BAD etc.

Upon re-reading it sounds like you're all probably correct, given it says "Any fee or charge, including any government charges...". I hope you're all correct anyway :) - I'm pretty sure I've read other CC T&Cs where it was a lot more ambiguous though.

Then there's also the issue of disallowing business expenses (incl. business tax)...

Thanks all for your interpretations. I'm game to try and see whether I get rewarded any points- it's PAYG tax only, and a small sum at that (relative to all you business people!) which keeps my QFF account ticking along. Will report back on how I go! :)

I'm sure you'll be fine - apart from the fact that you're within the T&Cs if this is a personal tax bill, as I said earlier it's almost unheard of for CC companies to enforce these parts of their T&Cs properly (with the notable exception being the Woolworths Everyday Rewards Qantas card - and even then it seems to only be an issue if you're really blatant about it).

sorry, i got too lazy there.. CitiBusiness gold... i think it might have the 1/2 price annual fee thing but i rather get some bonus points!!! :P
