ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I was wondering how it went in using non AMEX cc to pay the taxes to the ATO.

Non-AMEX cc's tend have a clause excluding reward points for government fees, taxes and charges.

I would appreciate it if you could list any non-AMEX cards that worked, I am trying to find a non-AMEX cc for paying government charges and taxes to another Australian government agency.

Thanks

Johno

I've never seen any card that states that. Happy to be shown Terms & Conditions that contradicts my thoughts though:?:

I always thought these referred to any taxes that may be charged to your account by the bank, such as when FID used to be payable. Anyway, I believe all cards give you points for GST :)

My thoughts are that that term relates to the various financial government charges like the older BAD, FID, etc that use to appear on card statements.

If it is included it is for good measure in case the government of the day reintroduces new charges on the financial transaction.

ANZ Qantas Visa scored award points for both the payment and the .67% Card payment fee.

i agree with you albatross710, I think (and hope) it is limited to financial charges and the like.

Still as cc providers exclude such things from points (as well as many other cash equivalent transactions), I thought it would be great if some one who paid on a non-AMEX could confirm that they got the reward points.

OZ_mark, I enclose an extract from the Macquaire CC terms and conditions. The Macquaire was noteworthy because it does not give points on GST (its only one I am aware off), but the other terms are commonplace in cc agreements.

Points are not earned in respect of the following amounts that may be charged to your Account:
• GST and government charges
• Interest and other bank fees and charges (including any GST payable on any of these)
• Cash Advances
• Special Promotions such as balance transfers, and
• Transactions made in operating a business.
If a Transaction is reversed, we will deduct the points earned on that Transaction.

I think they mean government charges in relation to your credit card itself that are charged to the account, rather than a charge from a government department ?

Fully agree. Indeed, Amex has this type of clause as well.

That is interesting.

Does anybody know how Macquarie would know what component of a transaction is actually GST? Is that information transferred to the issuer with each transaction or are points calculated after subtructing 1/11th from the transaction amount? I can quickly think of 1 example where that would not work (payments for overseas flights)

.

Once again I'm thinking the GST component of banking service charges. Some charges attract GST, some don't.

I think others have proved that it works but i have also proved that a HSBC Visa, ANZ Gold Visa and a Citi Plat. visa and a CBA Standard also works without issues.

Another $8,000 on the credit card, the trial is still working and you can even use Amex but its 1.02% where visa is a more acceptable 0.67% :D

For me the 'fee' is tax deductible.

Visa @ 100 QFF point's per $100 and pay 67¢ or
Amex @ 150 MR points per $100 and pay $1.02

For me the Amex is better value :)

Note you also get points on the fee ;)

I did this as well on my Amex.

If Amex have a transaction special ever again, its worth noting that you get two transactions on your statement per payment, eg

ATO Payment - $x.xx
ATO Credit Card Fee $x.xx

Strange that the forms you receive from the ATO still say-- no credit cards.

Are the fees definitely tax deductible? I have not spoken to the accountant yet.

Of course the fees would be, it's a "cost" of doing business.

The reason it is not on the forms yet is because it is still classified as being a trial.

Hi all,

Can someone please post the ATO contact for CC payments. The link at the start of this post is no longer valid on the ATO website.
