ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Yes the ATO have to be paid and on time regardless of whether you are scratching around to find the funds.
JS really started some fiendish behaviour and paying the ATO using a credit card is just part of the whole game. I still get a buzz paying payroll taxes in the eastern states on a credit card as well as phone bills, electricity, rates and stuff like that.
By the way we are all mere mortals the last time I checked although travellers who don't get jet lag may be different.

Happy to report that I have been volunteering my citibank plat to the boss for ato payments.

It's nice to be on the tax train!

Well volunteered hummel!
Do you have thoughts on places you want to travel to or do you have to stay home to pay taxes every month now?

Nice one. I've unfortunately gone the other way. It being deemed a risk by our auditors. Has anyone encountered a similar situation/ found a suitable compromise?

I'm not sure the boss (family business) would be to happy with me jet-setting off again any time soon having returned from a month in Europe in July and a week in China last week for work. Nonetheless, happy to stockpile point's and it's my way of helping out with the cash flow :p

I got so keen I accidentally went a couple of hundred dollars over on my Citi Select account limit. It is all good today as the BPay arrived to zero the account.
We now have 5 Citi Select cards being used in our family business so it is the bargain of the month of September.

By the way hummel the idea of stockpiling Citi Rewards points to avoid expiry is one of the best going. Being a wholesaler I think of the points as being "warehoused" and you only need to transfer them when you are getting close to booking redemption flights.

ANZ Plat Rewards:

Recent change in latest bill:

"You will not earn Reward Points on interest
charges; premiums paid for ANZ Credit Card
Insurance; government charges; bank fees; cash
advances (as defined in the ANZ Credit Cards
Conditions of Use) and card account adjustments
resulting from disputed transactions."

Does anyone have the old clause?

To date I have been receiving points for ATO transactions - are these affected by the change?

Hello Splatty,
So far paying taxes on the ANZ Amex and /or Visa has earned points but is a less efficient or more costly card to use than other non big four bank cards.
Point per dollar cards include Woolworths Everyday, HSBC, Jet Star CC, Bank West Platinum, Citibank and Qantas Staff CU and earn twice the points of ANZ Visa.
ANZ Amex is now costing almost a cent per point being 1.45% to earn 1.5 points per dollar but at least it still earns the most points at a bigger price.

WA land tax has had its $5k limit removed and the fee is 0.5% . Sure it is not ATO but it is nice that States are offering a deal to get paid quicker.

I have an approximate 5K tax bill this year.
Would it be better to pay it off with my ANZ Platinum Rewards card (VISA/ or amex?)
I also have an AMEX platinum edge, but I think they have halved the fees.

Amex is now a no go at the ATO 0.5pts per $ and 1.45% surcharge

For a small figure of $5k, I would suggest using the WOW QEDRCC if you have one, 16k sign-up at the moment and uncapped 1:1 earn

If you don't have one then perhaps it's worth a look

I am pretty sure the bank Amex cards are still 1.5 points per dollar. As is the Amex Qantas Ultimate card for those of us lucky to have one until it too is enhanced.

it sort of depends on how many points you want and for what purpose and how much value you place on the points. Sorry not to give a definitive answer

But even for me, who has been the staunchest AX supporter, a cost of per 97¢ per 100 points ($1.45 per 150) is no longer viable when compared to 48¢ per 100 points (96¢ per 200).

i.e. a $1k debt can generate 1500 rewards points via Amex at a cost of $14.50 or 1000 points via Visa/mastercard at a cost of $4.80.

If you are short of points or you can redeem them for a high value I can see why some folks will pay a higher cost (about double) to use American Express where their card still earns 1.5 points per dollar.
There are now some Amex cards that will be only earning half a point per dollar from tomorrow which is October 1st.
Now if you have not been reading your messages from American Express you could call them as not every card changed. Most bank co-branded bank issued Amex cards have not changed but checking before paying an ATO bill would be appropriate.

In October we have quarterly and BAS all in one month. Have made a plan to get it all done by 21st and 24th seeing we are travelling on 24th. I don't think I will be using any Amex cards as they are double the cost. Amex Ultimate is still a 1.5 points per dollar as are my Velocity and Westpac Amex Platinum cards but the transaction fee at 1.45% is pretty high now.
Reducing to 4 different credit cards from Visa and MasterCard actually makes the ATO payments a little simpler.
