ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

No mention about advising your health fund there? I prepaid for 18 months and have not been contacted by either the health fund or ATO. Cove, who contacted you about this?

There is no issue for people who prepaid before the start of the current financial year on 1 July 2012 (until the prepaid period ends, that is!). I am also at a loss to understand what the problem is for Cove.

Cove - did you prepay for a certain period before 1 July 2012? If so, you should be entitled to the rebate for the full period of time you prepaid for (probably up until the end of this year, as that was the longest most funds allowed). You didn’t try to make changes to your policy or anything, did you?

Otherwise, as oz-mark states, this should generally only be an issue for those people who (a) are no longer entitled to the rebate and (b) did not prepay prior to 1 July 2012 and (c) have continued making reduced monthly payments as if they are still entitled to the rebate. Those people are going to get a nasty shock.

Medibank Private have adjusted my cover from 31/12/2013 to August sometime. I included my 21 year old on our policy under their option3 from 27/12/2012. Yes I paid in June,2012 about $6,900 and then a bit under $3,000 for my eldest son.
Look I am not worried seeing I have disclosed my income for Mrscove and myself and also for my 21 year old. None of us qualify for future rebates and I am calm about that as it is not a real biggie in the personal taxes figures we pay. Just a bit more..... Certainly not yet as high as the French proposal of 75% tax rate.
And of course I pay it on a Visa for Kris miles.
My kids may miss me when I am gone!

Ok, unfortunately that’s what has caused the problem for you. I also prepaid from 1/7/2012 to 31/12/2013 with Medibank Private, but at the time the person I spoke to advised me that if I make any changes whatsoever to the policy during that time, then it will basically invalidate the whole thing. I think it’s because once you change the policy, they cancel the old policy, issue a pro-rata refund and then start a new one. Because of that, you are technically no longer covered under the policy that you prepaid for before the rules changed, and hence you have to play by the new rules and lose the rebate. In your case, the loss of the rebate must have equated to about 4 months’ worth of premiums, hence your cover will now expire in August instead of December.

As you say it's probably not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, but it has probably cost you between $1500 and $2000. If I was you, and if Medibank did not clearly advise you that this would be the consequence before they implemented the change to your policy, I’d be very annoyed. I imagine it would have been much cheaper for you to take out a new policy for your son and keep your rebate on the existing policy until the end of the year. Bearing in mind that your son probably would still be entitled to the full rebate (unless he earns a lot for a 21 yr old, but then I'd ask why are you paying for his insurance?!).

Anyway, others take note - if you have prepaid, do not make any changes to your policy until the prepaid period ends.

My February run to LAX is on the A345 in all J so no KRUG for me but it is a work trip so that's ok.

My Feb run to PVG is in Suite to SIN then F on 77W to PVG.

Jeez I still hate paying any tax - but somehow this whole tax / pts / Suites redemption concept eases the pain dramatically.

I keep picking up bottles of Krug in Dan's and experiencing such intense mental coughs.

KRUG and Dom Perignon should be in the $150 to $180 range in Los Angeles and I get there next month.
I think I will start on ATO bills next week.

i am new here and i dont know if this has been discussed before but recently a friend proposed a "groundbreaking" way that he claims to be able to kill 3 birds with 1 stone on this whole issue of paying tax with a cc which has great ff point conversion rates. my legal background and some research has indicated to me that this method of paying tax will not work but i really hope i am wrong.

anyone my friend proposes that since the westfield xs gift card can be used where eftpos is accepted inside or outside westfield and acts like a sort of debit card, and can be used at australia post outlets within certain westfield shopping centres anyway, then why not purse many a gift card (they are 4.95 each and can hold up to $995) and then pay your tax bill at the post office using these giftcards vi eftpos? that way u get to avoid paying the amex fee, become a westfield vip and rack up all these points on your cc provided u pay a lot of tax. sounds too good to be true doesnt it ?

I thought it did and now think its actually not a viable or legit way but i wont type my reasoning here yet since i hope i am wrong. whats does everyone think?

Btw sorry i am typing on a galaxy tab 7.7 so excuse my punctuation and spelling.

Well, it is novel. I don't have a Westfield near me so that doesn't interest me much but it would mean purchasing quite a few of those cards to pay the tax bill. Not sure that would be practical for some plus time is money!

The good bit about ATO is you can pay them any time and they won't faint or worry that you paid them early. So that means you just start with any tax bill and give it a shot.
My BPay limit has been doubled as I am needing to use 4 credit cards in February.

...purse many a gift card (they are 4.95 each and can hold up to $995)

Effectively a 0.495% fee...? Plus time purchasing and using the Gift Cards...? (Direct pay using the Optus payment portal is Visa / Mastercard 0.48% & Amex 1.45%)

Not as good as a direct payment to the ATO with a Mastercard or visa, but good value for a greater than 1 point per $ Amex...

Wondering why you think not "legit", care to enlighten us / me...?

Yesterday I couldn't call the Westfield gift card hotline to ask them about where i can possibly use their XS giftcards but I did ask 2 Post Offices yesterday whether they accepted the Westfield XS card and they said no. And then I asked the lady there what if I went to one that was located within a Westfield shopping centre can I used the XS card to pay a bill on postbillpay? The lady said: No. I tried to do that once it didn't work.

Now I called the Auspost enquiries line but no one seems to be able to answer my question and when i told them the XS is like an "EFTPOS Debit card", they said "oh then you should have no problems as long as the Auspost outlet accepts this Westfield XS Card."

But in my mind, I thought my friend who said he read the fine print might not really have read the fine print properly and think technically enough. I don't want to type again but I was talking to a friend yesterday about it and later emailed her telling her why I think this way is not going to work and even if it were, it wont' be legit and you will be at the mercy of Westfield and Auspost who can change their policy at a moment's notice. I will paste some of my email here:

now Postbillpay (the bill paying facility of AusPost), accepts credits, debit card, cash and cheques. An EFTPOS debit card is a misnomer. There is no such thing as an EFTPOS card obviously I suddenly recalled! EFTPOS is a payment facility/network and system BUT not a type of card as you can use both a credit and debit on the EFTPOS system.

Now people say you can swipe your Westfield XS card on a machine at a retailer and pressing "savings" and the pin and it will process the payment but I think the EFTPOS machine always asks anyway, it's just a procedural thing you have to press (cheque or savings?), it doesn't mean it's a debit card or a bank card or whatever you call some plastic that is actually issued by a proper bank.

A lot of people on the net have confused this issue. Given that Westfield says this stupid XS card can be use at any retailer with EFTPOS facilities (subject to the retailer's discretion). Well, "The Australian Securities and Investments Commission has exempted Westfield from "product disclosure statement" and related disclosure requirements under the Corporations Act." - no wonder it's all sooo ambiguous.

The fatal parts of the Terms and Conditions before you make a purchase are: (1) Westfield is obliged to make payment in relation to the gift card only when it is used to make a purchase and there is sufficient unused value to make that purchase. Westfield retains any interest on unused value and; (2) Gift cards are not legal tender, account cards, credit or debit cards or securities

Then if you read the FAQ's at Postbillpay it says:

What accounts can I make Postbillpay payments from?
You can use Visa or MasterCard credit cards, Visa or MasterCard debit cards, Diners Club and American Express charge cards or PayPal to pay bills with Postbillpay[SUP]1[/SUP]. Some billers do not accept all payment types.
Can I make payments through this service using a Debit MasterCard or Visa Debit card?
Yes. You can use a Debit MasterCard or Visa Debit card to make Postbillpay payments.

THE WESTFIELD XS card IS NONE OF THE ABOVE

Besides, according to the clauses in the terms of conditions of the Postbillpay site :7.6 We are entitled to refuse to process a Bill payment request at any time, at our absolute discretion, or may require additional information from You, before We process the request

Just got off the phone with the Westfield gift cards hotline and when I casually brought this issue up....... the women said, NO Australia POst has decided to only accetp XS cards for goods sold in their shops not bills. And it makes sense doesn't it? The point of the the gift card is to encourage consumers to spend at participating retailers, and AUSPOST wont' get much out of being part of this if they let you pay bills through the PostBillPay system instead of buying stuff at their shops. Besides, they only accept debit cards and this XS is not. And if for some weird cough reason you walk into a shop with a $600 bills and then a gift card to pay it with, LIKE THE STAFF AT THE COUNTER WON'T FIND YOU WEIRD let alone using it to pay the ATO! i mean, who has a tax bill that is under $995? There is no name on the XS card and anyone who scratches the pin off at the back can use it, if you pay even a $3k tax bill with the post office with it, I am sure the staff would notice what the hell you are using to pay your bill with, let alone tens of thousands of tax bills a year.

My case rests

My head hurts. Maybe someone could translate all that for me? Sometimes simple but not as lucrative is best.

Sorry i put out a legal argument so in short:

1. XS is not a debit card but it works on the EFTPOS system, acceptance of which is up to the retailer you go to.
2. Postbillpay only accepts two cards, Credit or debit card on their eftpos system.
3. So XS is not accepted as it is not a debit card.
4. I asked two non Westfield ausposts already, they didn't accept XS cards.
5. I asked the Westfield gift cards hotline about using XS cards to pay bills at an Auspost through the Postbillpay system and the answer was no only for goods/merchandise at Auspost shops.
6. Even for some weird reason you swipe your XS card and payment goes through the EFTPOS system of their postbillpay. Auspost can turn around and say we don't accept this card becasue they have absolute discretion.

Short answer - a novel idea, but it didn't work

Also, welcome to AFF kahung :)

How many QFF points will you get for $11K payment? 11K QFF? If so, that 0.5c each, well worth it in my world
