He's not talking about using the gift card scheme mentioned a few posts back (which sounds like it wouldn't work anyway) - just plain 'ole paying a tax bill on a credit card, as per the main topic of this thread.

I paid 2 bills today, total $ 8,000 on my EDR MCARD @ 0.48 % = 8,000 points cost about $ 40.00 and 3 - 4 minutes.
Worth it or not...? You betcha in my opinion all day long

Loving this forum more and more, seems so many people enjoying cheap points...

Received a letter from the ATO, seems that my business is making too much money and my PAYG instalments are increasing yet again.... You all know what I think about that...

MORE FREQUENT FLYER POINTS...!

:p

Edit: Living the dream...? Are dreams always this good...?

Have just completed the ATO mission for January and have 8 bills due in February between 21st and 28th while I am travelling overseas. If the results were not so outstanding I would say this would be highly inconvenient.
Sometimes I wish this was not a monthly chore but then I remember my first 25 years of overseas travel in economy as highly inconvenient.

Made the decision to fly pointy end in 1994 and had to figure how to do that without using real money.

I used to think about the cash value of money by paying tax bills on the last possible date and here I am thinking about wrapping up February ATO bills by February 7th.

Just kidding!

Just checkin in....$11K ATO = 11K QFF points worth my $51 in fees?
good start but you should be looking at CC with 1.25pts per $spend or even 1.5pts ( some AFFers claim to have seen a mythical 2pts per $ spend CC) so that you get 13750 or even 16500 points. makes the $51 fee alot easier to wear.

There are alternatives if you are eligible for different credit cards. If the particular tax is BAS you may be able to get a tax credit up to 47.5% off depending on your tax rate.
So if you pay a tax deductible $52.80 on a BAS of $11,000 the net cost may be as low as about $27 for 11,000 FF points. There are at least 6 credit cards that can do this for you.
Using a big four Amex card you may get 1.5 points per dollar for about double the net cost.

I wonder if the ATO is offering commissions for getting people to pay tax earlier? I work as a chartered accountant and yesterday was going through a BAS with a client. This guy had always been very tardy in paying his tax commitments - I mentioned the credit card/ff points and since then he always pays on time.

However yesterday was something else - told him he had $xx_xx to pay - his response was "Is that all, I was hoping to pay more". He now wants to increase his PAYG installment amount so he can earn the missing number of points he needs for an award.

So dear ATO, not only is this guy now paying on time, he wants to make substantial extra payments - what's my cut?

Wow someone who wants to pay on time and pay more! I can see a market campaign for the ATO here :)

ATO has been accepting my pre-paid instalments for a while now, all you need is an EFT number or PNR code and you can make payments as you wish...

The way I see it is that it has to be paid anyway, so if you need an extra leg-up to reach an award then its fully justified to pay early.

Makes you wonder, if the CC companies stopped points earning on ATO payments, the ATO collections performance would be significantly reduced, Perhaps the ATO would consider a points offer from themselves in their own right...?

Pay before ??/??/?? and receive X Frequent Flyer Points

We wish

i'd be a little cautious with this - they have been known to issue refund cheques on excess balances.

Accept refund, bank cheque, repeat pre-payment to ATO

But seriously, don't think they will refund unless you are way in credit, as a self employed sole trader, I think they would be happy to have me in credit, and most payments I make are basically early but can be justified based on my PAYG & GST reporting and payment requirements under Australian Tax Law

We did receive a refund cheque once, when I had set to auto debit on a BAS, when a newer tax return had been lodged and the amount I needed to pay, had reduced. But if they did refund, as you say, double the points!

Australia Post does accept Westfield XS Gift cards for Tax payments. It treats it like any other Eftpos card. You can pay all over the counter bills with the gift card. Hell you can purchase the Gift Card using Amex Issued card and pay the Amex card statement using the gift card. Rinse, repeat and fly :)

Sorry i put out a legal argument so in short:

1. XS is not a debit card but it works on the EFTPOS system, acceptance of which is up to the retailer you go to.
2. Postbillpay only accepts two cards, Credit or debit card on their eftpos system.
3. So XS is not accepted as it is not a debit card.
4. I asked two non Westfield ausposts already, they didn't accept XS cards.
5. I asked the Westfield gift cards hotline about using XS cards to pay bills at an Auspost through the Postbillpay system and the answer was no only for goods/merchandise at Auspost shops.
6. Even for some weird reason you swipe your XS card and payment goes through the EFTPOS system of their postbillpay. Auspost can turn around and say we don't accept this card becasue they have absolute discretion.

For individuals with a year end tax liability don't forget the ATO pays interest on early payments. So if you lodge a tax return in July 2013 and your notice of assessment had the November 2013 payment date and you decided to pay in it August - you'd be entitled to interest from August till November. You need to claim this from the ATO - it is not done automatically. They can send you a cheque or you can claim it as a deduction in the relevant tax return.

I believe you should lodge and pay as late as possible - but still worth knowing for people who pay earlier because they need points by a specific date etc. Again this is for individual year end tax payments made early.

Don't see that as a problem really, as long as they don't post a correction to the CC you will still get your points. Also not sure there is an excess balance here, they are paying the debt before the due date so the balance exists, it just hasn't reached it's due date.
