ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Hopefully this is not too OT - mods feel free to move to more appropriate thread if indeed so - but +1 to angus'ssss query re CX redemptions. I have used SQ solely over many years for J Saver redemptions - wondering how CX and now MH actually stack up in terms of redemption availability / pts reqd for MEL-PEK/PVG redemptions.

MH availability and burn rate are both amazingly good - I haven't specifically ever searched to PEK/PVG though, only KUL, HKT and CDG. J product is a bit subpar though (still good - just not top tier airline quality).

Which card are you thinking of using for ATO which can transfer points to MH?

Have a six figure ATO bill to pay in a week so I think it will go to Westpac Amex KrisFlyer to give them a thrill. Sure I hate the higher fee but I will use the free credit days to lessen the pain of 1.45% for 1.5 points per dollar.
The fee in this case will be deductible so that will cut a hunk off the cost in real terms and it is just a matter of making the payment on a card after the month close off to get the free days.
The bill has to be made on the due date as the ATO would charge interest on any days past due at their penalty rate.
Yep, the Krysfler card likely to get my ATO payment this month too!

I can confirm that my Virgin Money High Flyer Platinum is no longer earning points for ATO payments. Seem to have been allocated some points for a payment made on 1 March but none for a payment on the 7th.

Very grateful to have uncovered this on a relatively quiet month of payments - a month later and I would have paid almost 300K on our March BAS & PAYG.

Same thing happened to me last week.

Rang them up and complained and had points manually transferred after asking them where in their T & C's it said ATO payments don't earn points.

Did another payment with my Citibank Signature - will advise results. Last one two weeks ago posted fine.

With Citi giving dust on points for ATO I have a few choices left.
BankWest cap was reached in a month so that comes back on line for $200k later this year.
There are 2 Amex Ultimates, 2 Westpac Platinum Pluses Altitude, 2 Westpac Platinum Kris Flyer and 3 Woolworths MasterCards (if I count my sons Qantas points earning cards.)
All the quarterly taxes are arriving so there will need to be choices made.
Clearly I don't want Woolworths to go cancelling our 3 personal cards but they remain the uncapped and inexpensive MasterCard so i really cannot use them for a lot.
At least there are still choices to get 1.5 points per dollar on these Amex cards at the moment.
I will use Citi on plenty of other stuff but zero on ATO.

Thanks Cove - I assume that all the cards you mentioned above are still currently issuing points for ATO transactions?

As I currently only have the AMEX Plat Charge, Credit and Edge cards, and the Citi Select, I am thinking of signing up for the Westpac Altitude Black. I'd assume that card will issue points for ATO? Anyone have experience with this?

Cheers

my notification about the Altitude Black letter said sometime before July, so am waiting with baited breath and are looking fwd to reading T & C's. am now home after another ATO induced holiday
too

What are you referring to when you say July?

I got a letter telling me that I will get an invitation to upgrade my existing Altitude Platinum Plus to Altitude Black, at no extra cost. It said the invitation would come before July (which is when they introduce points capping on Platinum Plus). I assume that's what KLN was referring to. However, new customers can apply for Altitude Black now.

I assume it will pay points on ATO, as apparently current Altitude cards do, and my plan is to use mine for my forthcoming ATO bill. But then until a couple of weeks ago I thought Citi Select would pay points, so who knows!

I don't think anyone has the Black yet do they so unlikely to have experience but Westpac cards in general give points for ATO at the moment and we are hoping this does not change!

Does anyone have experience using the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum (ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum - Platinum Credit Cards | ANZ) to make ATO payments?

I'm concerned by clause 22(a) that says points "will not accrue in relation to . . . government charges . . ." I'm assuming that ATO is not a government charge in this sense.
Yes, have used that card frequently. BUT (and this will probably be enough to have me banned from AFF) I am hopeless at checking my points crediting! (Ducks head in shame and to avoid flying missiles.)

I'm relieved to say I've now had a positive experience with this with the full points from an ATO transaction charged to my ANZ Qantas Frequent Flyer Platinum Amex posting this week.

Why not try doing multiple varied transactions well before they are due to see if that helps and simply reimburse yourself early ??

If you do that your name may need to change to "nothinforsomethin" as Citi are determined to pay you zero points on ATO.
If you get some points say nothing on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitterverse would be my suggestion.
Some of the thrill of the chase for points is removed when the cost is a fraction less than a cent per point for ATO but if it is tax deductible your ATO partner can share part of the cost.
A point for about half a cent (after a tax deduction) can still be very attractive seeing QF has opened its alliance with Emirates last night.

Just use an EDR or JETSTAR or both with no capping although I think Jetstar is 100,000

think the problem is determining the maximum allowed on the EDR before getting the phone call about cancelling your card.

That is a fine balance and no one knows the answer. We use that card for lots of grocery style of purchases to give them a fair shake. Frankly I was surprised when I got an offer to increase the credit limit even though I had signed up for the opportunity.
The credit card with the EDR on the back has been really handy.
