Australia to Reduce Incoming Int. Passenger Capacity from July 2021

Why is it that Q gets guaranteed all their costs (& overheads) will be covered by the Federal Govt for the repatriation flights yet the overseas airlines that are keeping Australia supplied & bringing some (very small proportion though) standed Australians home - get nothing?

Several airlines, early on, said they'd be happy to fly into Darwin before continuing on to elsewhere within Australia with their cargo load.

Yet they are left to wither on the vine whilst Q creams off taxpayers' funds. All the more galling with this morning's announcement that Q is standing down thousands of staff again without pay.

So much pull in Canberra for Q obviously to the detriment of Australia.

IIRC there are several airlines the Cth is subsidising to continue their freight services to Australia... so it's not just QF.

But I dunno why we are paying for QF repatriation flights when the likes of Singapore Airlines could bring connecting traffic from across the world via their SIN hub into DRW. Crews could probably even work the SIN-DRW return without the need to rest or enter Australia.

The answer has been discussed ad nauseous (pun intended) so many times on here suggest you scroll back a few 100 pages to see why/why not.

..and then, just as now, there were no credible reasons why overseas airlines should not have been, nor currently be, used.

But based on this I will remind him to contact them as soon as possible. We’ve told him that bank of mum and dad will pay for J upgrade if it helps to get him here.
So how are things going? Is he still looking OK for an August arrival?

Despite all that is going on around the country - another piece of negative news for allowing international arrivals to home quarantine.

Yesterday Victoria's random checking found 17 people who were out & about without any valid reason. All 17 referred to the police.

Surely, as a ray of hope, the Federal Govt should at least announce that in order to prepare for the eventual opening of borders that they have contracted for ABC thousand ankle bracelets to provide certainty that people can be monitored....

Did they say 17 out of how many?

I think the number is about 20,000...obvs they wouldn't all have been checked on that day.
I was being a bit sarcastic - I am sick of the constant obsessive carry on about things. Once we have fully vaccinated people in home quarantine and most of the population vaccinated, surely we can get away from stupidities like ankle bracelets.

So far no news from Singapore Airlines, which I hope is good news 🤞 I did check with ACT Health and he will be permitted to come directly from HQ in Sydney to ACT without further quarantine so that’s good.
Overall it’s just a very big wait and see.
thanks for asking though. I appreciate that.

You would have thought they would have their new schedules sorted by now, so fingers crossed!

Master FM is now coming back from SFO a with SQ - a safer option according to Madrooster. He lands early September, but we won’t get to see him until late September by the time he does quarantine and interview in Melbourne. Just hope nothing happens by then that will prevent him travelling from Melbourne to Canberra.

Exactly how I feel about Seat Son travelling from Sydney.

So, the flight that Seat Son is booked on still seems to be running. It’s SQ231 SIN-SYD, and seems to be running each day. Their other flights SIN-SYD seem to be more hit and miss at the moment, and are definitely not running every day. So hopefully he does not get bumped from the flight for a higher paying person.

Next challenge is getting him from Sydney to Canberra after his 14 day HQ, as there seem to be very few direct flights to Canberra (not even one a day) and so otherwise he will have to try to fly via BNE, if nothing more changes and locks him out. We are also looking closely at all the standing exemptions, and there may be a way for us to drive there (Sydney Airport), load him up and drive and back, as long as we don’t get out of the car in any hotspots or areas of concern. Potentially doable, but will require a return to my military logistics skills to put it all together.

I am finding this extremely stressful.

A bit like the swimmers in the warm-up rooms in Tokyo.

Music seems to be helping.....

We went through the same thing in January when Dr FM was trying to get back. When she phoned in hysterics from Heathrow because Qatar had told her her seat had been cancelled, I almost had another stroke! But in the end it all worked out - just hang in there and it won’t be long and you will be seeing him again!

If SYD-CBR is unavailable on the day needed, could you also consider looking at SYD-OOM and picking him up in Cooma?

(I was in almost this exact situation a while ago and this is one of the things I considered...)

Great suggestion! Cooma is much closer for us and many less restrictions at the moment. Thank you.

This week at least there seems to be a daily flight from SYD to CBR that leaves in the morning or around lunch time. If SQ 231 arrives on time at 11am this flight should be OK, as he can leave HQ from 6am onwards. We arrived on the same flight in December which was during DS and it was due in at 12:15 but we reached the gate at 11:58 - that was important as arrivals after 12 noon must stay in HQ until 6pm. (Or this was the case in December). But SQ 231 seems to always run on time or early so that is looking good. Also if Cooma doesn’t work Wagga and Moruya are both shorter drives than Sydney.
