Australian (Open) Tennis and COVID-19

Isn’t T4 Melbourne only Jetstar (and Rex and previously Tiger perhaps)???

Twas a joke!

However all the terminals at MEL are joined together, so if he wanted a pastry from Brunetti its an easy walk.

Yes that’s what happened, an international tennis star wanted a fat laden snack, so checked in, happen to google the place randomly then waded through the warren of the old VA1 terminal, worked out you have to go downstairs then went back outside then walked down to T4 then ‘damn - I have to go through a seperate security screening, never mind my six pack and next tennis match I want that fatttt!’ - then found the shop, purchased a pastry then navigated back up to international....

I suspect probably not.

If indeed he did go via Doha, a place that has thousands of cases a week in its own right plus flights arriving from covid hotspots all around the world I think is is potentially a more likely story...

I feel he might have got it at the airport as it was Feb 9 when he left, I dont think he posed a risk when in Australia

The issue remains that he was negative on 9th and now positive, presumably becoming positive on 10-13th. How he became infected needs to be determined. Australia isn't in the clear by any stretch. Such a case has put many states into a lockdown. No comment as to whether that's the correct approach. Well, except it seems for essential workers...

Yes our premiers locking down at one case have a lot to answer for, that goes without saying....
I dont agree with lockdown with only 1 case as this is the UK strain which is more infectious than before, but I agree the hotel quarantine must do much better than this!

Agree they should not be taking peoples word at what is in their luggage they should be searching through every single persons luggage, babies change bags included - just incase the person accidentally has a medical device like a nebuliser and has mistakenly and unfortunately misidentified it and not declared it.

They should also probably body screen HQ detainees to make sure they aren’t carrying on their body too.

Those big bulky tennis bags the tennis players carry, imagine how many they could smuggle in! And so many tennis players English isn’t their first language so they might have got confused when they went through the screening process too....

I wasnt talking bout the medical device, but the hotel quarantine should be handled consistently by 1 body across australia by the commonwealth, but not handled by the states individually... I think doing this in hotels is okay in the city, but the consistency by the commonwealth with all hotel quarantine are dealt with by the commonwealth would be a better decision overall

Apparently customs are screening everyone's luggage for some time.

I didn’t realise customs were trained to spot medical devices, they must have been up skilled quickly! And if they were and they missed it then it’s the Feds fault.

Not good enough really is it.... Luggage needs to be hand searched. And probably body searched too (Would need full PPE for both staff and the HQ detainee).

Surprised me too. Just read it this morning. Go figure.

That was a a bit of a mis-direction/furphy.

She said that customs screened every bag coming through Melbourne Airport, in the context of contraband such as weapons (I think the question from the journo was along the lines of if the person lied about the medical device, what's stopping someone from lying and bringing a gun to the hotel - bit of an extreme comparison but not without merit). Which obviously is done. It was not in the context of medical devices, as far as I can recall.

That sounds familiar but thought I'd also read that, but maybe that was the context. Then why mention it if it was irrelevant. Trying to drag some other authority (Federal) into the mix?

Yes, my immediate thought was that most of her comments were fancy dress for either "I don't know" or "hey, look over there"

Tennis anyone?

Back to the tennis, yesterday the last Aussie player got knocked out of the men’s singles.

Down to Ash Barty to fly the Aussie flag in the women’s singles.

You would have to assume that there would be some who do

To be safe perhaps all the tennis players personal belongings should retrospectively searched? Just on the chance to at one of them is actually positive but tested negative every time.... just to try and eliminate all risk....

Easier to retest the negative results perhaps, as a follow up apparently changed the result of one of the CQV workers at the Holiday Inn ..

To eliminate even more risk they should all be tested again regardless every six hours. We need to get to zero zero zero.
