Well I did say last week we needed outbreaks in multiple states to get vaccination going. Didn’t mean to ill wish NSW though…

18 new cases - 13 was announced yesterday.

+6 since 8pm

Delayed presser a bad sign.

Well already a number of parents from my daughter's class had to cancel holidays at Gold Coast and Victoria. I can see that this impacts interstate tourism sector.

It is amazing that the restrictions at NSW usually happen in school holidays.

Well I am trying not to feel as though the gods have it in for me :(. Master FM is coming out to Aus to renew his Visa - we were planning to visit Sydney to see him and go somewhere nice for dinner. Sixpenny was looking impossible but maybe Quay as he hasn’t been there. All out the window now - we are working on a “quarantine in Sydney and then immediately leave to stay with us in Canberra” scenario now. Was really looking forward to holidaying in Sydney with him - he has been pretty much locked up since March 2020 in San Francisco.

What we know about NSW's new cases

There's now 36 cases linked to the Bondi cluster.
These are the 13 cases included in today's tally of 18 new locals that were were already announced yesterday:

  • Eight are linked to a birthday party in West Hoxton, attended by a previously reported case linked to the Bondi cluster. About 30 people attended this party and they have all been tested and are in isolation.
  • A woman in her 20s from Wollongong who is a close contact of a previously reported case linked to the Bondi cluster.
  • A hairdresser from Western Sydney who worked in Double Bay. He is not linked to a known case or cluster. Urgent investigations are underway.
  • A woman in her 20s from Sydney’s eastern suburbs who is a close contact of a previously reported case.
  • A man in his 70s from Sydney’s eastern suburbs who is linked to the Bondi cluster.
  • A man in his 50s from Sydney’s eastern suburbs who is linked to the Bondi cluster.
These are the five cases included in today's tally of 18 that we didn't hear about yesterday:
  • Two women and a man from Sydney’s south west who are linked to the birthday party, attended by previously reported cases linked to the Bondi cluster
  • A teenager from Sydney’s eastern suburbs who is linked to the Bondi cluster
  • A woman in her 20s from Sydney’s eastern suburbs who is a close contact of a previously reported case
And these are the six local cases reported after 8:00pm who will be included in tomorrow's numbers:
  • A man in his 30s who attended the Christo’s Pizzeria in Paddington at the same time as a previously reported case linked to the Bondi cluster
  • Three women who are close contacts of a previously reported case who works as a hairdresser at a Double Bay hair salon. All have been in isolation while infectious
  • A man in his 40s who is linked to the West Hoxton birthday party, attended by previously reported cases linked to the Bondi cluster. A total of 11 people who attended the party have now tested positive for COVID-19
  • A man in his 40s. He is not yet linked to a known case or cluster. Urgent investigations are underway

The way we report numbers in this state is crazy....

Example: You're stopped at an Random Breath Testing site on the way home this evening. Try this line: "Officer, I've only had four drinks, two of which I announced that I was going to have yesterday. There are three drinks that I had, after 8pm, which will be counted in tomorrow's numbers."

People obsess over this though and endlessly debate on twitter what the 'new' number is. Why can't people just compare the 24hrs to 8PM number as shared every day. Then apples are always compared with apples.

I think it spreads the panic over a longer period.

Imagine if they didn't announce the figures yesterday, and today it's 18 new cases? The other 7/8 states would close their borders completely and demand a statewide lockdown.

The fact that we’re a year and a half into a pandemic and still obsessing over “is it 6 or 10” in a population of 5 million is laughable.

I recall the PM and Premier stating that once the vulnerable were vaccinated, we’d stop reporting case numbers as they’re irrelevant. No surprise that didn’t pan out.

Agree it is messy, today our Sydney team said to us on our morning call ‘We had 24 new cases yesterday and 18 today’.... because of the way they dribble out case numbers, confuses people. Makes it sound a lot worse than it is.

I don’t know why they do it and also why do they publish so late, gives the media all morning to whip people up as well through breakfast TV. Sigh.

Better testing at least.

That super spreader party keeps on giving!

The mystery case from today is a strange one.

They haven’t got the link to the Double Bay hairdresser cluster yet either.

Early on during the second Vic lockdown the numbers were released at the presser. So if that was delayed, the numbers were delayed. They soon got the message to release the numbers first, and then do the presser when they got to it. Made much more sense. And they seem to have kept with the 'last 24 hours' message, as opposed to the current trend in NSW where the reporting periods are getting jumbled.

I believe the NSW presser was delayed today due to Gladys requiring a test

NSW police have begun fining people for ignoring face mask rules, moving away from trying to ‘educate softly with cautions’. Now moving to hard compliance.

NSW police to consider setting up roadblocks to monitor the Sydney LGA lock down during the holidays.

They do still occasionally drip feed out 'real time' numbers....but I think only when necessary. An example is the cases that occurred recently in the aged care facilities. It is a bit tricky to release those as exposure sites without some further justification due to the sensitivity of those locations.

So if the number is now close to 50 cases that is 1 in 100000 of the population of Sydney.

Now let's look at NYC.Here are current numbers.

And for NY State.

So guess what NY did on this day.
"New York — The state of emergency New York has been living under since the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic expires Thursday and won’t be renewed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today."

New case identified in Melbourne, linked to NSW

A man in his 60s has tested positive to COVID-19 (since the last numbers were reported).
He flew to Melbourne from Sydney.
Flew to Melbourne on Sunday. Was at daughter's in Sydney on Saturday night.

So one might guess that will mean unlinked and as yet unknown cases at large in Sydney too (The daughter and/or others in her household and their contacts). Morseo as the daughter lives in a green zone.

More on the new Melbourne case who arrived from Sydney

Victoria's health Minister Martin Foley said the man in his 60s was in Sydney visiting his daughter.
His daughter lived in a region of Sydney which was classfied as a 'green zone'.
He returned to Melbourne on Sunday.
Late Tuesday he started to show symptoms, and got tested on Wednesday.
Displayed Symptoms late on Tuesday night.
The man is being interviewed at present. This case has only just been identified not long ago. Which is why Weimar who was meant to be at the Presser is not yet there.

The man works at a drycleaners.

Great. Cue VIC locking NSW out to stop any more of the outbreak coming in. Watch for all LGA’s to be declared red shortly :(

I was just saying that this would happen a few hours ago. I would have been quite surprising if this didn't happen.
