Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Is Dan your mate or something?
You take great delight in potting every other Premier but according to you Dan is some kind of mythical god who can do no wrong 😂

No, I don’t know him. Do you?

I don’t believe I’ve commented either way about him. Haven’t really paid much attention to Vic politics and as their border is open doesn’t really impact me :)

AFF contributers are generally not subject to reelection so have a freer rein.

Pity 😂

No I don’t know him and despite being a Labor stooge he has done a pretty good job IMO. He has made mistakes though as all Premiers have.

Of course they have, every state has made a ‘Ruby Princess’ which is now the cool kids slang for a ‘FU’ :) And they all will make mistakes in the future too.

I’m not sure Victoria deserves this hysterical reaction from everyone as I’m personally convinced the virus has spread much further than we think - but that can’t be proved either way so only time will tell.

but that can’t be proved either way so only time will tell

And if that truly is the case then SA as an example, is clearly coping with Covid spread without the need for medical support. For over 2 months now. And In the last few weeks we are very much opening up to test that.

Given there are only a handful of people in hospital in Australia it will all certainly be revealed over the next few months.... As will the true impact on people’s livelihoods.

Smells of pure spin, which is to be expected from this Victorian government as they are simply the experts at it.

Yep, I get the impression so many in Victoria are just ignoring the state government now. There's been a lot of negative media publicity in the last few days about the flim-flamming going on. The Defence Force v police v others change in decisions accentuated this.

I want Tasmania open. Yes that is a whinge lol

No area can stay 'locked up' forever.

I haven't looked at the sector by sector stats but one would guess Tassie and NZ have a similar reliance on tourism.

The State Premiers have discovered they have a lot of power.

Absolutely this. The VIC government got rolled by the police union regarding the hotel quarantine. According to today’s press conference the Sheriff (!) will be running the hotels. Whatever they are doing in those hotels isn’t working.

I’d actually prefer inbound flights to go somewhere else that can actually run a secure hotel.

I thought part of the problem is defence force personal have no powers. They are unable to enforce state laws and thus are only able to be used as non-law enforcing helpers. Roles such as logistics, medical, engineering etc. If there was an issue at the hotel they are unable to arrest or charge or fine anyone. The defence force does not have the powers of the Home Affairs Department staff or the police with respect to Australian citizens. Of course I could be totally wrong.

I think you’re right under the Defence Aid to the Civil Community powers. What I find odd in all of this is that quarantine is a federal power under the constitution so I would have thought that the feds have more control over what goes on.

Yes with this unique set of circumstance, unfortunately they do. And they by and large are not made for it. Thankfully when things return to ‘normal’ they will recede back into their little holes.

Probably the most disappointing part of this pandemic in Australia has been the state v state politicking. You sometimes forget we are one country watching some of these state ‘leaders’ comments.

One Premier seems to think "the Nullarbor" is an ocean that separates his Island from Terra Australis

Where Federal and State laws are inconsistent, Federal law prevails. The Constitution has always made that clear.

But the problem here may be that no quarantine period Federally - by way of an emergency declaration or whatever - may have been declared and gazetted.

The cost in lost employment and small businesses must be starting to be very significant.

And what about mental illness and worse (a word you can guess)? The latter is not 'visible' to us at present but although it's certainly not my response to any setbacks, that's not to say others won't take that most unfortunate route.

The increase in cases is concerning, but not alarming.

When this first began, getting a test required some kind of a need (ie symptom), then it moved to a free for all - provided people took the time to front up and do it, whereas now they’ll literally come knocking on your door.

This obviously means more positive cases will be identified from asymptomatic people who would otherwise have been missed (and may not be contagious anyway). Based on the previous “peak” of a few hundred cases per day identified by symptomatic cases, this small increase in Victoria is not showing signs of reaching a “second wave” level.
