Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I think in Victoria they accompanied Authorised Officers - saved the AOs having to work two-up so effectively doubling the number of visits possible.
Yes, but what powers do they have? Is it none? At least make them Special Constables.

I don't think they need powers if they are there to make up a two-person team. I'd be surprised if special constables didn't require some sort of formal training? (of which there wouldn't be time)

Special Constables can be appointed at any time (with designated/reduced powers), given the circumstances. Potentially a legal minefield if something goes wrong. Not to mention the legal “protection” aspect of the ADF members involved.

Edit: My nana would volunteer to do the accompanying thing. And she would do it without being paid. 😉

In Victoria ADF members were used (amongst other tasks) to accompany police officers on patrols, Authorised Officers (working under the direction of the CHO) and also as ambulance drivers, to allow Ambulance Victoria to dilute the number of paramedics on shift to protect against service delivery issues.

Accompanying the Police on patrols (without any legal powers?). Almost anyone could do that.

ADF now, for compliance? What powers will they have?
I would assume that their role might be to buddy up with a police officer for compliance checks on those who are supposed to be isolating at home.

The number of active cases has tripled in the past 2 weeks. This must put a huge strain on the police who presumably work in pairs and still have their day job to do. The ADF people have no enforcement powers as I understand, that remains with police.

I spent a former life in the ADF. There’s always the issue that if ADF positions can be left ‘unmanned’ (yes, apologies, as I know that it’s not a politically correct term), then there’s the risk that those positions get deleted by the ADF boffins, as it is shown that they are not required (in peacetime, anyway), in order to function. That is always a risk. Just mentioning this as it can happen.

Cool so they should just recruit some randoms to do it 🤪
I assume that there exists something similar to this extract from the Customs Act to allow for assistance - For the purposes of subparagraph (f)(i) of the definition of officer of Customs in subsection (1), the Comptroller‑General of Customs may, by writing, authorise a person to exercise the powers or perform the functions of an officer of Customs for the purposes of a specified provision of a Customs Act

Yes. Just needs some political backbone to implement, if necessary. It’s misuse of the ADF to be dragged into this, if it’s just holding the hand of police while they stand at the front door of someone’s house.

I agree, though if there is one cohort I would understand some hesitancy in, it would be that group.
Given that there is little to zero data yet on whether AZ or Pfizer has any impact on a pregnancy initiated after being being vaccinated, with a little more on pregnancies existing before being vaccinated - then I can quite understand the hesitancy especially if anyone mentions Thalidomide to them. It will only be in three or four years time that the question can be answered with any degree of certainty. Hopefully, it will be a non-issue.

CV can certainly cause more issues if it is widespread in the community but until June 16 that was not a consideration.

Personally, I feel extremely lucky (relieved) that this did not happen 20-25 years ago - I would not want that added concern. The relief felt after the birth of each child, and subsequently confirmed to be 100% healthy etc - cannot be described, I'll never know what winning lotto a few times in a row feels like but it may be something similar.

Almost like a plan to be able to put more blame on the Feds. "Told you so" kind of thing. There must be something fundamentally wrong in their set up. Maybe it's the tests?
That must of been what Gladys was up to last December with 4 leaks in 17 days then of the far less contagious strains 🤣 🤣 🤣.

Just like with Ruby Princess - the June Sydney Eastern Suburbs (source unknown) outbreak has been the source of around 11 other outbreaks around Australia (or potential outbreak in NZ).

The only difference is not every State was forced into a lockdown by NSW's failure to contain this time.

I (plus thousands of people) am going to try to work out the definition of "non-occupied construction" ..... and "contactless tradies". Big implication there and I do feel that the definition will be stretched.
Contactless tradies = tradies who don't return phone messages or texts after they've received the down payment. Thought to be around 42% of Sydney based tradies involved in residential construction.

The only difference is not every State was forced into a lockdown by NSW's failure to contain this time.
SEQ (and Townsville) lockdown was due to their own homegrown breaches.

And the NT lockdowns were also due to the Qld breaches.

You can still go past the 10km if you can't find the item you need.
Of course, it is important to be able to personally source an Almond double latte brewed in the morning sun at an inclination of 37.5 degrees. They're too cold by the time the courier delivers them.

With all these inconsistencies, even with English as your first language, the NSW 'quicksand' rules must be near impossible for others to understand. How many people with low levels of education knew what an LGA was?

Then add in that the rules change every couple of days - miss something and you're lost.

Throw in the incessent 'victim blaming' approach used since the very first case this time around with the limo driver implied to have blatantly flouted the rules/law/requirements driving without a mask etc. Subsequently, very quietly, revealed only after being repeatedly questioned at the media briefings:

  • CCTV showed him wearing a mask before, during, after picking up the FedEx crew
  • FedEx crew tested negative, so were virus shedding & therefore not the source of the outbreak
  • Limo driver complied with requirements & actually exceeded them
  • State Govt had not fully considered what requirements should be & for what they did require were doing no checking to ensure they were being adhered to
More recently it has been the 'gathering' with the people demonised by implication, "Please let me say do not mix with your family..."

Only problem being that the people had not been having some random gathering. It was a funeral for a son who committed suicide. The family followed the State Govt requirements for a Funeral 100%. There were no breaches of any rules, there are no grounds for any fines.

Yet for nearly two weeks Gladys & Brad used them for 'look over here' practise everytime they were questioned about the lockdown rules not being strict enough +/or not working.
