Yes, we are celebrating that collectively we got this under control! The important thing is that we're learning... we're closing the gaps through which the virus is coming in. Hopefully not to be repeated, and measures in place to stop other potential avenues.

This is simply certifiable… nothing is going to stop a repeat of a lockdown, anywhere. It’s just rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat, lockdown lockdown lockdown until Australia the worlds biggest vaccine snobs get jabbed

Qld CHO getting less hopeful that the quick snap lockdown will be short. How do the SE Qlders think things are going at the moment??? Is there anecdotal evidence of horrible initial compliance like in Sydney???

I live in inner city. People seem more scared now but plenty of people still moving around. Still not seeing heaps of checking in. Masks pretty good this time though.

I just hope they are scared enough to ignore our CHO’s ranting anti AZ vax rhetoric (they can listen to the rest of what they say though!) and go get vaccinated!

Maybe this is the lockdown QLD needed to lift our appalling vaccination rates.

So let's say NSW gets to 80% vaccination and it turns out that that translates into something like what we're seeing today, say a couple of hundred cases a day and a few deaths.

Does VIC (and do other states) keep "going hard and going early" in the pursuit of ZERO ZERO DONUTS DONUTS RAH RAH RAH?

A commenter in the SMH pointed to this data today, after everyone piled on about the lockdown not doing a thing. I've not seen this data presented or reported frequently enough to have noticed it before now. Very steady in the last 2-3 weeks, but clearly needs to get below 1.

I will out some family members. My nephew's partner went to her super essential job as a family lawyer in a small firm in Brisbane yesterday, taking their 18 month old with her into the office because his child care was closed. She was told to take the little darling out of the office because it was too disruptive for the rest of the staff. So the little darling's partially vaccinated grandparents (aged 61 and 71, each with one shot of AZ), drove from Gold Coast to Brisbane to look after him for a couple of days. Does not sound like they are taking it very seriously to me.

I’m currently in Brisbane (been here for a month, going home to Newcastle on Friday).

Road traffic is not as quiet as the government would have you believe. There’s plenty of cars at shopping centres and businesses. It’s definitely significantly reduced but still enough about to keep the virus kicking along.

I have been to a lot of sites in Indooroopilly last week and I’m really lucky that I’ve dodged the contact tracing locations (been to the locations but not at the times specified). I’m expecting my luck will run out very soon - hopefully after I cross the NSW border (fully expecting to isolate at home for 14 days regardless)

The early commentary from Gladys was all about "green shoots". These seem to have all withered and died.

The NSW Gov seems content to stay in limbo hoping that vaccinations will eventually be enough to reduce the numbers needing to be admitted to hospital, and thus allow restrictions to be eased. This would seem to going to take some time.

Yes, agreed it’s not going down… I’m not calling for holidays and ice creams, just yet, but for a variant that was supposedly 1,000 times more contagious virulent than the one which had half the planet on its knees for the better part of the last year, I reckon a flat reproductive rate of about 1.0 for a few weeks, isn’t too terrible. I think they say it's twice as contagious, not 1000 times. Viral load is often mentioned as being 1000 times higher.

That's the difference. And if we get another outbreak before vaccination is at the required levels I guess we'll go into another short lockdown. And learn from that too.

Personally I'd rather have a short lockdown, learn, fix the issue, and carry on rather than a mockdown and have potentially months of restrictions.

I wonder if that will change the mind of Queenslands' stubborn CHO regarding AZ. She specifically called out the risk to 18yos of Covid was much lower than the risk associated with AZ shot, but with this report and the death of a 27 yo in last 24 hrs, that statement seems even more fallacious than it did before.

Maybe we don't have super spreader events because we follow restrictions? The attitude is celebrating the success, but still being alert to the potential threat. Not sure how that translates into anything sinister.

More needs to be done to get this damn thing down to near as zero as possible. I just feel like we are in a continuous holding pattern.

The difficulty is what.
The settings have worked in Waverley LGA (Bondi, Vaucluse) which is all but at zero.

But haven't worked in other parts of Sydney. Already she's continually accused of racism, picking on poor people for the harsher settings in those areas.

As for Victoria's ring of steel, from what I understand it was actually leaky as a colander, but Andrews is far better with his rhetoric than Gladys.
