Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Why not just create a bubble around Melbourne  Rural Victoria currently has very few active cases (outside the "Commuter Zone" (i.e. fringes of Melbourne, including Melton etc) there are 5 active cases - one each in Bendigo, Shepparton, East Gippsland, Wellington (around Sale), Golden Plains (which covers the area between Ballarat and Gellong).
Where would they draw the line for a Melbourne "bubble"?

It is interesting that VIC requested the border close and not NSW.

It's going to be fun for the drivers on Wednesday (ACT/Southern NSW woolworths stores are mostly supplied via Wodonga RDC)

Not quite true.In 2009 the NSW and Vic Governments agreed to run Albury hospital and Wodonga hospital in the same organisation-Albury Wodonga Health.
NSW and Victorian governments cooperate on the running and together plan upgrades and changes to services.
So early this year they jointly announced an upgrade to the ED with $30 million supplied by NSW and to build a short stay unit with $6 million supplied by the Victorian government.
It’s administratively operated by VIC Health.

Good question, the difficult bit is the commuter belt, and how you deal with that, although that's obviously being dealt with in the current lockdown postcodes. I'm not terribly familiar with the south east, but I could in the north and west, it's not too difficult to pinpoint where Melbourne ends and rural/regional Victoria begins (although you'd almost certainly have to include satellite towns like Sunbury and Melton with Melbourne). Where ir gets difficult is places like Lara, Bacchus Marsh, Gisborne, Kilmore etc...

Only a rumour, but ....

There was a reported rumour on radio 3AW this morning was that Victoria have recorded over 200 new cases in the last day.

The presenters did not want to know about it ...
Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s 200-250 today. I’d imagine the test results from the residential towers will start filtering through and conservatively I’d think maybe 300 out of the 3000 residents will test positive but possibly more

In the current environment always best to wait for the facts and not rumours by media personnel (or others) trying to make themselves look good and spread fear.

Dan stated explicitly in his presser this morning that the Victorian managed hospital was located over the border in NSW and arrangements would be put in place for locals both sides of the border to utilise the necessary common facilities they normally used. (Despite news.com falsely reporting repeatedly that "no Victorian would be allowed to cross the border")

According to ABC

New South Wales-Victoria border to be closed

The ABC understands the Victorian-NSW border will be closed from Tuesday night following talks between Premiers Daniel Andrews, Gladys Berejiklian and the Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

...wonder how the PM will spin this and be consistent with his previous position....or has AHPPC changed its view?

In his presser this morning Dan said the PM would be contacting the AHPPC this morning and advising them of the decision made in the phone hookup. One could possibly infer that the decision was not a specific recommendation from the AHPPC, but assumptions are often found later to be wrong.

And sharing of resources is how we as a country will get through this pandemic. At the moment it's Melbourne. Next month it could be Sydney, Adelaide or anywhere and if Melbourne staff capacity they will also assist.

We're at the beginning of this crisis, not the end. There is a long way to go.
Absolutely. I was almost about to say Australia is acting like a country again and then I read that NSW just closed the borders!

Berejiklian said they would be setting up a permit system and an exemption system in the next 72 hours to facilitate crossings. So if you need to cross over regularly you can get a permit or an exemption for one offs.

That's what is happening at Vic/SA border. The numpties in SA wanted to even stop that. Little do they realise that much of our daily needs comes in on those trucks.

But hopefully this means South Australia will allow NSW and ACT in and maybe even WA will open up to everyone except Vic. Once Vic gets their hotspots under control we can be one country again.....

I think although we have had border closures, Australia has been acting more like one country than it usually does, with cooperation and consultation at all levels.

SA was going to open ACT and NSW with an announcement last Friday. They stopped it. Obviously Victoria coupled with their school holidays and free transit to NSW from Victoria squashed that plan.

Is there a situation where all people testing positive to Covid in the high rise could be moved to an isolating station where they can be monitored and isolated even if not needing medical treatment? That may at least give some protection to other family members in the same unit. i Know my Aunty who had diphtheria as a child was moved to an infectious diseases hospital so she didn't infect my mother. I'm not sure how ill she was.

But they might revisit it now.

NSW are not closing the borders unilaterally. The border with Vic is being closed after consultation between Dan, Gladys and the PM. The ABC news here reported that this was initiated by Victoria.

Be interesting to see if any new COVID cases north of the VIC border are traced back to the Melbourne area.

Too much for PER (110 people in quarantine) ..... who will fold next?

On top of OOL, CNS making some money out of a (well run) quarantine program if they were allowed, what about expanding to CBR? All these secondary ports could open? Take some of the load?

Even good old HBA? Dust off the decades of dust off the international terminal ;) 😂

Mark McGowan is asking for “one flight per three days” to slow the flow of arrivals into WA.

If it allowed me to go overseas, not for holidays but to connect with close family members, I'd be happy to pay for hotel accommodation but would want the choice to select more than one room. And maybe even the arrival city.

Each state seems to be fed up with paying for hotel quarantine now and are taking action to ensure planes go elsewhere;

BNE charges pax for the quarantine.
PER now wants one flight every 3 days.
MEL is closed for 2 weeks.
SYD will only allow 450 pax per day and max of 50 per flight.

So are DRW, ADL, HBA, CBR about to get very busy or Is Australia closing to international flights by stealth?

Could actually be a nice money earner for hotels otherwise sitting empty and likewise for these secondary airports which are going to get NOTHING for a long time....

Some of these secondary ports could flip this into an opportunity....

(All hinges of course on a well run program)

Reckon he is just stroking his ego and is playing games. Saw him also mention that he has asked the Feds stop backing Clive’s bid to re-open the border
