Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Has anyone done an analysis of the differences between NSW's post-70% plan and Victoria's post-70% plan (both metro and regional)? Since we don't have a formalised NSW 80% plan/policy/roadmap yet (hopefully its released this week), there is nothing to compare on that front.

I posted a number of the key differences yesterday. Freedoms the vaccinated in NSW get at 70% such as in-home gatherings, gyms, intrastate travel and indoor dining are not on the Vic 70% plan.

There is a paywalled article in the Herald Sun today and another in the Age.

Many more freedoms in NSW at 70%

That's good then. I hadn't seen that protection specifically stated but makes sense. I don't envy small business dealing with the angry antivaxxers though because they will be out to prove a point..
I think this is something that few are talking about as the virus spreads. I can see open conflict at the doors of businesses that exclude either the unvaccinated or the vaccinated.

NSW said they’ll do something at 80% 16+. You say that’s “following the national plan”.

Becuase that is the published plan, perhaps you should read it.

and then something more at 80% 12+. You say that’s “not following the national plan”

There is zero mention of 12+ in the national plan, adding that made up criteria is altering and therfore not following the national plan. Simple.

Cant see the vaccinated people being desperate to give their business to anti-vaxers who dont want to admit/service vaccinated people. Sensible people will stay away from such places.

There is a business in Adelaide near our office that has a sign - "no vaccinated people to enter." It's a sign writing business. It makes me feel like entering and telling them that this is a good move because I wouldn't want to use the services of a business coming into our office whose workers were not vaccinated. 😝

In news that will surprise absolutely no one…

Will interesting to see how much the virus starts to spread around there when it all opens up.

Fears Byron region will be ‘awash’ with Covid cases by Christmas as locals reject vaccines

There are growing fears for the Byron Bay and surrounding regionwith locals predicting the area’s high vaccine hesitancy will lead to disaster once NSW reopens within weeks.

Local health workers claimed anti-vaxxers were intentionally booking fake vaccination appointments only to never show up, causing doses of the precious vaccine to be wasted.

“A large degree of anti-vax sentiment is flipping the bird to the mainstream with both middle fingers – well it’s time for the cool kids to take one for the team,” he said.

Meanwhile, in nearby Lismore, doctor Chris Ingall said the area’s high vaccine hesitancy meant it was only a matter of time before an outbreak took hold, given NSW was just weeks away from reopening.

“The opening up of the state is inevitable and we are going to be awash with Covid by Christmas, maybe before then,” Dr Ingall told the publication.

And as we know that Queensland hospitals are only for Queenslanders most of those who need extensive hospital treatment or ICU are going to end up in Sydney.

Yes because there isn't anyone from interstate in a Queensland hospital...

I think in this case a localised lockdown of these areas should continue if they haven't hit the vaccination targets. People booking vaccinations and no-showing (particularly repeatedly) should be followed up by Medicare and billed for the cost.

Yes agreed but this will be a major issue for our new QLD CHO to grapple with as well once we open up in Nov/Dec/Whenever to NSW.

Why bother??? The area will probably get locked down for another case soon.

I think this is something not really nutted out - what is the intended treatment of 'covid-zero' areas of NSW.

Imagine intrastate holiday makers being locked down because a case appears - great management and forward planning.

Same could apply in regional Victoria as well

I think it will be interesting to see 'enforcement' of the vaccinated staff rule at 70% for NSW and Vic.

I read an interesting conversation/post by a US anti-vaxxer where they were getting a table and were asked for their vax cert and they ended up asking the staff member for their certificate.

We will probably end up with some righteous customers pushing the issue and asking to see staff vax certificates.

I don't think they'd lock down for one case, but you would most likely see sustained community transmission in these areas which would meet the criteria for a hotspot to be declared even when we open up. Vaccination disrupts the chains of transmission to a large extent, and if Lismore and Tweed hospitals look like they'll get full then the state might intervene.

I would not be keen on booking BNK or environs for a few months yet.

I hope you are right, just for some sanity. But with the regional hotspot rule being a lower threshold just sitting in the background and the respective authorities leaving the door open by inferring/saying if case numbers rise (from their respective 'baseline') - in that regard no one seems to be following the part of the national plan which infers fully vaccinated can keep their freedoms/go home regardless of case numbers

I think it’s actually reasonable if vax became mandatory for customers then staff also.

Yes, I'm not saying its not unreasonable. Someone mentioned arguments/confrontations from unvaxxed customers being not allowed entry - it can go both ways - arguments from vaxxed customers re: unvaxxed staff.
