Why cite just one country?

Because other countries don't support the argument such as Japan where mask wearing is just as frequent as Singapore,borders closed in practical terms and they social distance yet for 3 of the last 4 weeks the highest number of new cases in the world.

As you’ve been told many times, masks are as good as over.

Not sure why/how you contort "masks as good as over" (because people don't want to wear them) with their use not being beneficial. There are plenty of pre-Covid papers on the benefits of (various kinds of) masks for respiratory Issues. That people may not wear them properly doesn't imply that a properly warn mask isn't beneficial. Individuals can make their own decisions about whether/how mask wearing protects themselves or others. I've done > weekly RATs and a few PCRs and remained -ve even whilst partner had COVID (daily testing for us both). Masks, social distancing, and hand hegiene - who knows what worked but flu is bad and I've siblings who's second COVID dose was much worse than their first.

And there has been some astonishing misinformation posted by a so-called front-line health worker. Married to a geriatrician. Unbelievable...

But the that is the whole point right, covid is here to stay with us now, forever. Like colds. Like the flu. Like RSV. Etc etc.

It is never ever going away. So this thread lives on too?

Maybe we should start a thread for each of the respiratory illnesses going around

Maybe it’s because they are testing more than any other. You wouldn’t have a clue how many positive cases there are here in Australia. We may have more than them?

Except they did not change their testing process from when the case numbers were much lower.

I've always been a glass half full person but that has nothing to do with my opinion on what's going on.

I don't have facts but there have been reports of a few mystery viruses already plus resurgence of some old ones.

I think we need to be cautious. That's not negative. That's smart. Patting ourselves on the back and ignoring the last 3 years is foolish.

JohnK is travelling overseas right now so I'm a little confused because most people who want to have mask mandates and are very concerned about catching Covid just aren't willing to risk travel overseas.

I think I posted why I'm overseas.

My wife was stuck in Australia for 2+ years and extremely homesick. This year has been the first opportunity for her to go back home. It was also an opportune time to build the house we've been wanting build for quite some time.

Wife and daughter were going to be here 6-7 months until house finished. Originally I wasn't going to go but later decided to take the chance and visit my wife/daughter, see my house built and have a holiday.

I have had 4 covid vaccines. I'm fairly cautious. I decided the risk was worth it. By the way most Thais are still wearing masks in public even in the village.

And none of this changes my stance on social distancing, forced (or voluntary) isolation and masks. Life goes on but I'm still extremely cautious. So far so good.

An interesting article on the ABC website today about the recent surge. 80% of the cases are in people who have not had Covid. Of the reinfections most were in the elderly or those with underlying health conditions.

Also interesting that Singapore is reporting the same numbers as regards the proportion of new cases.

Well it does kind of accord with the general understanding of viruses that previous exposure offers some level of immunity (notwithstanding the fact that the virus is mutating all the time so it’s not the same virus as a year ago). My experience (for what it’s worth- single data points don’t prove much) is that while I know plenty of people getting it for the first time I also know a fair few who are Re-infections.
