Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Not everyone. Still quite a lot of people wearing masks. Hope they don't get ridiculed.

With your posts it sounds like you don't give a damn but if you've been staying home when sick in the past then I think you'll do the same if you knew you were covid positive. There a quite a few that don't give a damn and they worry me. They don't belong in society.

As for what I've listed as minor inconveniences they are minor inconveniences.

I've read many times on AFF where people are making a huge deal about having to wear shoes instead of flip flops because shoes are uncomfortable. LOL.

What a burden it must be to wear a shirt instead of singlet.

Or wearing socks.

People make huge issues over nothing.

I don’t think two years of hard border closures was an “issue over nothing”. I don’t think people losing their careers because they refused a vaccine is an “issue over nothing”. Perhaps nothing to you, but certainly not to others. Just as coronavirus may an issue to you (and I suspect it won’t be as chances are you’ve had it), it’s certainly not to the vast majority of people.

If I knew I was “covid positive” I’d certainly take a few days off. But if I’m not sick, how will I know? (And why will it matter?).

I’m sure even you can see that the covid hysteria is coming to an end. I suspect masks will be a forgotten thing of the past in a few weeks (and I wouldn’t say “a lot” of people are wearing them) and isolation not too long after that. It’s something you’re going to have to come to terms with.

Yes I'm one of those who make a fuss about shoes (or not wearing any at all), or rather dress codes in particular. Most people see it as a burden in the sense that they are being dictated at being what to do because of some arbitrary social norms or in the case of covid, when to wear a mask when we can assess our own risks. The vulnerable can also assess their own risk and wear a properly fitted N95 if needed.

I don't share your optimism. I think it will get worse but that's just my opinion.

How can you assess your risk when the first couple of days you are asymptomatic, but able to spread the virus?

The one issue those against protocols won’t address is the impact on casuals and medical staff who can’t go in to work if they get covid.

Sure, I can be asymptomatic, but how many are scared to catch it from me? And i wouldn't even know. Those who are scared can take whatever precautions are needed. The world moves on.

Impact on casuals and medical staff would probably be a moot point once the remaining isolation period requirement ends.

It’s not about being ‘scared’ to catch it. It’s the inconvenience! I was not asymptomatic, and I really don’t want to catch it again. Nor do I ever want the flu again! And I was off work.

Not scared, I just can’t be bothered.

I wear a mask out of respect and consideration for others.

No one wants to catch it, but let me have that choice if I don't want to wear that mask.

Agree on that front. But as the doctors pointed out on this thread, masks are most effective when worn by an infected person, to stop them spreading it. They may not be nearly as effective when being worn by a non infected person trying to avoid being given it.

And nothing supports that view. You’re welcome to be as hysterical as you like and hide at home, but stop pushing that on others. The fact that you’d even contemplate traveling to Thailand is hard to comprehend.

Effective doesn’t mean it’s going to have any real impact. As you’ve been told many times, masks are as good as over. You’re not getting back to the point where everyone wears one so get over it. Wear it yourself. That’s the best you can do.

JohnK is travelling overseas right now so I'm a little confused because most people who want to have mask mandates and are very concerned about catching Covid just aren't willing to risk travel overseas.

Catching covid is not related to travelling overseas per se.

It can be related to people who are infected, not wearing masks, and spreading it.

Studies have suggested people refusing to wear masks are also potentially less likely to adhere to other protocols such as physical distancing and optimal hygiene.

Why cite just one country? 😉

Suits an agenda. Just like saying “as the doctors above have said, mask wearing stops the spread” while ignoring the 99% of other posts that suggest otherwise.

I’ve given up. Not worth arguing with someone who genuinely believes you can avoid a mild, highly transmissible virus by wearing a little cloth on your face. Especially when said cloth is going to be virtually eradicated in coming weeks.

The benefit is in the infected person wearing the mask, to stop them spreading it. That is the proposition you will not address.

And for the final time, it’s irrelevant as masks are not coming back into use by the general population. The “study” you have used was pretty poor for one, but it also assumes masks are being used correctly. They are not, were not and never will be. This also ignores the fact that we’re trying to “protect” ourselves from something that is no worse than a cold and has a lower mortality rate than influenza.

We tried masks mandates, we had our highest levels of transmission. We gave it a go, it failed. And that’s why they’re virtually 100% phased out. Get over it.

Covid is not unique. Chickenpox, rubella, mumps, influenza and hepatitis A (amongst others no doubt) all have presymptomatic infectious periods. All have potentially serious consequences but it is not expected that the whole population alters their behaviour (besides getting appropriate vaccinations) to reduce transmission.
