As long as it is not a cloth mask worn for a long time. You may then actually be worse off if you wear it for hours than not wearing a mask at all.
The Control arm in that trial was standard procedure which included wearing a mask.
Is there an equivalent trial where the control arm is no mask?
That would be more convincing of evidence of harm.

Sure. Which is why the Governments now have to rejig their thinking about the wearing of masks and educate people how to use them as safely as possible. I suspect their stand against masks going back a few weeks was simply because our stocks were low and not for medical reasons. But of course we needed to protect supplies for those medics who truly needed them. But maybe the messaging was suss.

Heard on the radio today that SA is going to start testing people randomly in Chemists. Detail is still being unwound but if I was approached I would refuse on principle. I am happy to voluntarily go to a testing site if I felt there was a disturbing symptom but this is a step too far for me.

They did record it.
2/458 participants in the control arm didn’t wear a mask of any kind.
“In the control arm, 170/458 (37%) used medical masks, 38/458 (8%) used cloth masks, and 245/458 (53%) used a combination of both medical and cloth masks during the study period. The remaining 1% either reported using a N95 respirator (n=3) or did not use any masks (n=2).
“Owing to a very high level of mask use in the control arm, we were unable to determine whether the differences between the medical and cloth mask arms were due to a protective effect of medical masks or a detrimental effect of cloth masks.”

Medicine and science react to perceived irrefutable evidence .
Society arguably needs to be offered some better quality comparative risk analysis than getting peed upon..or not….
There appears to be little information about the airborne makeup of Covid viral infection in general social environments
What percentages and what type of airborne viral content are Governments seeking to protect folks from?
Cloth mask advocacy reeks of a , we need to do something , mindset by government.
Surely we can do better, why is stuff presented to meet the intellectual capacity of ten year olds…. ?

I'm guessing aiming at the lowest possible denominator, sadly. But in reality so little is known about this virus that its like herding cats trying to get a handle on it. Once a virus attacks the immune system in the manner in which this one is doing, then anything can happen. Inflammation is a major cause of illness and everyone "does" imflamation differently.

Anyway before this descends into yet another thread on masks.....

Spot fires continue to pop up all over Sydney and an illegal party in Sydney’s north west overnight with over 60 people had to be broken up with capsicum spray.... seriously?!

Also a very devout infected parishioner attended one of Australia’s largest churches for 3 days in a row.

Another Sydney supermarket closed as an infected worker worked there - Woolworths

Sydney church closed after parishioner tests positive for coronavirus

Australia’s largest Maronite Catholic church has closed for cleaning after a parishioner tested positive for COVID-19.

The church member attended Our Lady of Lebanon in Harris Park in western Sydney on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.

The church has been closed until Tuesday.

Sydney Woolworths forced to close after infected staff member identified

Another Sydney Woolworths has been forced to close after a staff member tested positive for coronavirus.

The Spring Farm supermarket in the Macarthur Region closed overnight to undergo a deep clean.

The employee last worked on July 16, but did not have any symptoms, 7 News reports.

Anyone who went to the store on July 16 should look out for symptoms over the next fortnight.

Virus detectives 'concerned' by rise in NSW mystery cases

NSW Health is doubling the size of its contact tracing team, as the state grapples with two separate clusters of COVID-19 and five mystery cases that have virus detectives "really concerned".

The five cases still under investigation last night included a man and a teenager from the same household who visited the Soldier's Club in Batemans Bay on July 13 and McDonald's in Albion Park two days later.

Dozens face $1000 fines after boozy Sydney house party breaches COVID rules

Dozens of people are facing $1000 fines after police broke up a boozy late-night house party in Sydney's north-west on Saturday night.

More than 60 people were partying at the house at Nottingham Street in Schofields when police arrived just before midnight following a noise complaint

A 15-person brawl broke out inside the house when police arrived, with many of the guests intoxicated. Police officers used pepper spray to disperse the drunken crowd.

NSW's reproduction rate much higher than Victoria

In Victoria the reproduction rate is sitting around one. In NSW, it is sitting at 1.4, meaning the potential for transmission in NSW is much higher. While Dr Kelly said the reproduction rate didn’t “necessarily predict what might happen in terms of the numbers of cases or hospitalisations” it is a “good indication”.

The masks I have bought have a pocket in which you can place a filter for added protection. Any thoughts on filters? If we did use the masks they would be for very short periods - an hour at the most when out shopping. We are pretty much not going anywhere, but there is essential shopping that needs to be done - like Haighs chocolates :)

There are P2.5 filters on sale through Amazon, E-Bay etc. They are 125mm x 85mm.

The filters are good for approximately 70 hours of use.

I purchased them during the bush fires when the smoke was getting bad here in Melbourne.

I have a couple of masks, each with a filter and alternate between them on the rare occasions when I go outside.

Sydney should move to this soon.

I’m doing it already in Brisbane when I’m going into shops etc because there is pretty much zero social distancing where I live, shop and visit.
In Adelaide masks are pretty much non existent just like SD has become. We are pretty much back where we were pre Covid which could lead to trouble. I’m guilty of it too as I still use sanitizer and try to keep my space in line ups and whilst shopping but have become lax in other areas

363 cases in Victoria today. Bugger. 3 more deaths of people in their '90's.

Im starting to see a few more these days.

And masks soon to be mandatory in public throughout Melbourne.

Positivity rate much higher again too. :( 1.29 % which is the second highest since the second wave started and almost double yesterday's 0.67%.

Hospital admission and those in ICU both increased.

Also with the sheer volume of cases in age care popping up, even with many being staff, quite a few more deaths seem very probable now. :(

VIC should have just mandated masks and called it Stage 4. I am not sure what anyone would have left to whinge about, unless they're the disbelievers, who won't be satisfied until it is over and they can claim it was just the flu all along.

In that case you can decline also to have the PBS subsidy for your medication. The government is paying millions of dollars an hour to try and control this and we need to do our part.

So that means that there have been more cases in Victoria than the rest of Australia excluding WA- but they are thinking they don't belong anyway. ;)
