Have heard that the US tourists that were self isolating in the Barossa went and hired a minibus and drove back to SYD and were trying to get a flight back to the US when the AFP nabbed them. 4 of the group are in the medical profession which is even more staggering. Hopefully the cop harsh penalties

I wrote yesterday on another thread that I think it's time the police were given extraordinary powers under emergency provisions to arrest people for this kind of thing, plus for the bast*&#s who are going to country towns and cleaning supermarkets out. There was ID required in that the form you filled out was checked against your passport on entry to the country (assuming they like I were isolated due to returning from overseas) so using a false name on the declaration would have got you caught, however your passport doesn't have your address, and you were asked to declare the address you were intending to isolate at, which does not have to be your address but does have to meet other criteria (ie you would not have been encouraged to go isolate with your elderly grandparents - I don't recall the entire form but this was covered).

Anyway, hopefully the police will be able to lasso all these people that have come in / home, and then buggered off somewhere on a frolic of their own. If anybody heard the terribly unfortunate circumstances that they isolate people in India that could be the ultimate punishment.

Well again, I don't think it would help. You were not required to isolate at the address on your ID. For some there were probably very good reasons why they wouldn't (like family at home that they don't want to infect, or perhaps they are a renter sharing an apartment, or perhaps they have a nice holiday home they want to spend some time in, or maybe they don't even live in Australia? who knows).

That said, they know who the people are so I don't see handing them a nice big fine to be a big long term problem. I just truly hope they follow through with the threat.

Well again, I don't think it would help. You were not required to isolate at the address on your ID. For some there were probably very good reasons why they wouldn't (like family at home that they don't want to infect, or perhaps they are a renter sharing an apartment, or perhaps they have a nice holiday home they want to spend some time in, or maybe they don't even live in Australia? who knows).

That said, they know who the people are so I don't see handing them a nice big fine to be a big long term problem. I just truly hope they follow through with the threat.

Nobody's obliged to fly with any other ID than their passport so it's all very academic - I didn't take my license overseas with me (entirely on purpose) and I'm 99.9999% sure if I'd told them as a returnee that I'd have to duck home to grab my ID before coming back to clear immigration I'd have been told that wasn't an option.

Anyway, I am sure they will deal with those who have not been behaving. The threat of a $20K fine is one that will encourage people to do the right thing and I suspect if they start handing them out now it will reinforce the message that this is not a game. They may also handle this via the lame duck approach at which point all of those who feared said penalties will likely not care anymore, and that would be a shame, so let's fine a few morons and cheer on those who took their obligation seriously and locked themselves away.

I don't see any reason a drivers license even should have an address on it.

Apparently 4 Woolworths staff (2 support offices, 2 store staff) have Covid-19 and there's been 8 incidents where someone known to have it has been shopping.

What kind of country do you think we live in? One where the government of the day can just "decide" what you can and cannot do without any legal framework? Slippery slope my friend, slippery slope. History is littered with examples of tyrants who came to power just as you describe... at first it was one freedom that was taken away for whatever reason, and then it was another, and then another.... until they had none. But perhaps I am mistaken? I don't recall seeing the law that says as a resident of Melbourne CBD I cannot go shopping elsewhere? Country people come into my CBD all the time to buy stuff.... I don't say "hey get out I am going to call the police! This is my shop!" I certainly don't call them bast*&#s. It is purely logical, if a shop doesn't have something you need, to go look somewhere else. Are you suggesting that people in the city should go without if shops run out? I certainly don't resent people coming into Melbourne for life-saving medical services that you cannot get in the country. I don't say to the recpetionist at the hospital "hey! that person is from the country - they don't live in the CBD like I do - this is my city!!". The door swings both ways my friend....

Whilst I understand peoples frustration, please don't forget we are a single society - and as soon as we begin to fracture in this way "city v country" we are in trouble. And let's not forget... in normal circumstances, many if not most country towns in Victoria depend on tourism to keep their little towns alive... and mostly from the city. All those shops in high street, all the little cafes and restaurants and wineries etc etc.... they would be empty if it wasn't for the city person having a weekend getaway. Now, I have not experienced this myself, but if I was turned away at a country supermarket, when I desperately needed something, because I was "city folk", I would not forget it.

In my opinion, comments like this just add fuel to an already out of control fire.
