Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Not my experience, see my post yesterday - but then again may depend on where you live and your demographics.

Yes of course you are right it depends where people live, we have 2 offices in NSW, a huge distribution centre in the SW (and most people live around it) then a CBD corporate office and most people who work there live in the inner east, inner west. Inner east/west teams were saying beaches packed, contact sport being played, queues in restaurants and cafes not socially distancing. The SW people were most concerned about packed supermarkets and pubs (perhaps pokies?)... So different everywhere.

So they were all concerned about the same thing, but seeing different behavior driving that same concern....

And we are a bit biased because we can operate in a lockdown so we kinda want it in NSW, to really go for national elimination.

Last year I had a coworker sent home twice in 2 days because I heard him say to a cubicle buddy, "I wont get too close to you as I have the flu" and when I spoke to his manager, I was told it was "just the flu". Still got him sent home both days and enjoyed telling him in March that this is why sick people should stay home. As I tell people now, I was spraying people away with Glen20 before it was cool.

I was thinking of saying she was going Karen but I have two friends named Karen so trying not to use the term too much.
Some US citizens have replaced "Karens" with "Ivankas" ;)

but the crowd at a cafe/restaurant can be itinerant. Whilst there should be some record keeping of attendance, it's not going to be as accurate as other populated places,

All the restaurants and cafes at my local shops, required sign-in via app or manually before being allowed to enter - so should not be less accurate than other venues. I go to the same cafe for my coffee everyday, the owner knows most of the customers by name, Id say 90% are regulars. Same with my local Chinese restaurant, cake shop etc, they all know me by name.

Whereas friends who have been going to church tell me they don't take attendance - I hope the random police checks include places of worship.

Im surprised supermarkets dont have the QR code check-in that cafes, restaurants and pubs use.

The ACT along with NSW Woolworths asked people to wear masks in the store. I thought the ACT people were a little more sensible but I just checked out how many people are wearing them.
It’s easy to see who are the staff and who are not, because it’s only the staff wearing them, and me.
Woolworths is not making ANYONE in NSW/ACT wear masks. They expect store management and above to wear them. Staff are NOT being required to use masks.

The case/spread data in ACT and most areas of NSW does NOT support mask use. Period.

The only people who should be using masks are people who are sick, unless there is evidence of widespread community transmission which suggests that there are large numbers of asymptomatic/presymptomatic people running around unknowingly spreading covid, in which case everyone should use one. Other then Greater Melbourne and maybe some Sydney LGAs, no where in Australia appears to be at that point.

Mask use by a healthy person does not protect you from the virus and only reduces the chance of getting it from an unmasked sick person by a small amount.
Masks protect healthy people from sick people - provided the sick person is wearing one.

Until such time as the data supports their use, I will not be wearing a mask, at work or otherwise.

That is actually not the advice from the NSW government as we just briefed our teams in Sydney on this, the CHO advice is more nuanced than your beliefs above and mask use in NSW is now strongly encouraged where people cannot maintain 1.5m distance.

But you do you.... free country in NSW (for now) :)

...maybe.

I went out to lunch two Fridays ago for the first time in a while. I was asked to sign in but only one person required for each group. I checked the list in front of me. Apparently both "Mickey Mouse" and "Bill Clinton" were at the restaurant at the time. I couldn't spot either of them though. And the person prior had the phone number 0123 456 789. What are the odds? We walked out and we won't be back there again.

I still reckon the contact tracers have an easier job when you can say "I live in a house with Mrs Gremlin and I work with Pete and Steve" than "I ate at <<Restaurant Name>> at lunch last Friday." The chances of finding downstream transmission must be significantly higher if they know to talk to Pete and Steve and Mrs Gremlin rather than trying to find a couple sitting at the next table over.

Gladys just said 13 new cases, 3 international arrivals, 1 vic arrival - no breakdown of the other 9 yet. Guess will find out at 11am when CHO gives address.
Of the 13 new cases reported to 8pm last night:
  • three are travellers in hotel quarantine
  • one was acquired in Victoria
  • eight were locally acquired linked to known cases including:
    • one case attended the Apollo Restaurant Potts Point
    • one case attended the Mounties Mount Pritchard
    • one case attended Advance Early Learning Childcare Centre Merrylands
  • five who were close contacts of known cases
  • one has no known links to known cases
Comment: I guess the five is a subset of the eight (I just cut n paste from NSW Health media report.)

Confirmed cases to date:

By likely source of infectionCount
Overseas
2,034
Interstate acquired
80
Locally acquired – contact of a confirmed case and/or in a known cluster
1,118
Locally acquired – contact not identified

Counts reported for a particular day may vary over time with ongoing enhanced surveillance activities.

so 15 cases of community transmission (unknown source) since before Crossroads.

And that's why the CovidSafe app should have been updated to have Sign-in function.
One scan, no need to fill in a different form every time, and the restaurant/ pub doesn't get your number.
And as a big side benefit would increase the percentage with the CovidSafe app installed

This is in breach as 1 person for each household in attendance needs to sign in. I would avoid that venue. That venue also ought to check what is supplied and not seat them if bogus info, if they get inspected they will be fined.

Another two Phase 2 NSW venues.....(edit: typically it should be Phase 1 without a transmission at the site, but I just re-read and it looks like Phase 2, not sure if it’s a hot take error by the blog quoted, unable to confirm yet via NSW Health channels)

Immediate isolation warning for NSW pubgoers

NSW Health has issued a warning for the state's Hunter New England region after someone positive with coronavirus visited Newcastle while infectious.
Anyone who visited Hotel Jesmond on July 29 between 7.30pm and 9.30pm and Wallsend Diggers on July 30 between 7.30pm and 9.30pm are advised to isolate immediately.
Any visitors to either of the venues should isolate at home for 14 days from the date listed and be on the lookout for COVID-19 symptoms.
"Get tested regardless of symptoms, but you must remain in isolation for the full 14 days even if your initial test is negative," NSW Health said.
"If you do develop COVID-19 symptoms, you should be retested."
The person visited Newcastle from Sydney on July 29 and July 30 while infectious.
Has been doing the rounds on the local Facebook pages including HNE Health official Facebook page. Expect updates tomorrow re isolation. I’m personally glad that they have gone with the more stringent advice first up.View attachment 223949
Note confirmation of Phase 2 in today’s brief

Following confirmation of a Sydney case who visited Newcastle on 29 and 30 July while infectious, NSW Health is urging anyone who visited the following venues to strictly isolate at home for 14 days from the date below and get tested regardless of symptoms, but remain in isolation for the full 14 days even if the test is negative. If COVID-19 symptoms develop, get retested.
  • Hotel Jesmond on 29 July between 7.30pm and 9.30pm
  • Wallsend Diggers on 30 July between 7.30pm and 9.30pm
A person who was infectious with COVID-19 attended Fitness First at Rockdale on 27 July 2020 from 11.25am to 12.30pm, and a person who was infectious attended a yoga studio in Bondi on 23 July 2020 from 12.15 to 1.15pm. Both cases are associated with the Apollo Restaurant cluster at Potts Point and were previously counted in the public health alert. Close and casual contacts have been individually identified.

edit: from another source and extra location added

The Lambton Park Hotel is now closed — and any patrons who visited it between 7:00pm and 9:00pm on July 30th, have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days, and be tested for the virus.

Unfortunately, no third party is allowed to force you to download the covidsafe app. I guess that would mean to include refuse entry.

Well I am back out of self-isolation again (though we we will actually stay in it for a while yet) as daughter (who is back temporarily with us while she swaps where she lives near the hospital) woke with some minor symptoms and so got tested at her hospital yesterday. Test result back this morning as negative.

But we spent the day in self-isolation as we have done 3 times before now this pandemic. This time it played on the mind more as CV19 is obviously up and about more. So the negative result was a most welcome result. The previous times was more just knowing it was process you had to go through, but we were not really concerned.

Yes. Completely agree. We walked out and went elsewhere. But none of that makes it easier for contact tracers to do their job.

Well to be honest, I sign my name x number from my family with me as it’s too coughbersome to write all the different name and my phone number that many times.

What’s the generic insult name for the men doing stupid and selfish things? Continually insulting Karens is kinda wearing a bit thin.

It’s Ken.

Its gender neutral (it is 2020, gender is just a construct!) there have been loads of male Karens called out too.

But some people are using Darren 😂 :p

Karen and Darren.... ah the small things and small people in our lives we can't get rid of ;)

Sigh......in country NSW...

Four coronavirus cases in Wagga Wagga, including a baby

Local health authorities in Wagga Wagga have announced four people, including a baby, have been diagnosed with coronavirus after visiting the Melbourne area.

They are all from the same family and have been self-isolation since returning from Victoria.

They are a 52-year-old woman, her son and daughter-in-law in their 20s and their baby.

Health authorities say the 52-year-old woman is in good health.

Health authorities are confident they have self-isolated as required since returning from Victoria and no further contact tracing is required.

These numbers are in addition to the 13 cases announced by the NSW Premier earlier today.

Just note if an inspector pops in your could be fined along with the venue (unless you all live at the same address). If the venue uses sign-in app via QR code, then you can save your name, phone number and email for the next time you go - means single clik on future visits.

I had brunch with my parents at local cafe on Saturday. My mum doesnt drive anymore so never leaves the house without my Dad, so I just signed myself and my Dad in - took a few seconds - scan, type name and number.

Yep. That's how NSW has been reporting for some time.
A slightly better report format would to be identifying whether these close contacts have been self-isolating or not.

Eg. I'm not to worried about someone from the Apollo testing positive now as they've should have been in self-quarantine for a week.

Nor seemingly the Wagga family case above
