Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Dr Young says no Taiwan.
Even though Taiwan has 4.5 times the population of QLD and less than half the number of Covid cases and just 1 more death.
As well have not had a complete lockdown.Schools took an extra weeks holiday, restaurants never closed down, even buffets open and still Dr.Young thinks she knows everything when in fact she knows as much as Sgt,Shultz. Some of her statements have been apaaling.

I thought the approach was to keep things as open as possible while jumping on any cases that pop up from time to time, which seems to me what NSW and others are doing, obviously Vic had to take a different approach as things got out of hand, but they are pretty close to adopting that approach as well now.

what approach do you advocate?

Actually, the approach was meant to be “flatten the curve“. Shut down for a little while, allow the hospitals to prepare and then allow them to operate without being overrun.

We’re now in October. Movement between states is as good as closed. Movement internationally is non-existent. And we remain obsessed with “case numbers”. I can only imagine the weeks and weeks of drama the whole three cases today in NSW will cause. It’s a global pandemic. The arrogance of Australia has always been there, but if we honestly believe we eradicate a contagious virus that, in the vast majority of cases, causes an illness so mild people don’t even know they’ve got it then I’m sorry, but we’re very naive as well.

I do agree. NSW is the only state that has followed the path. The country, however, is not just NSW (even if we do fund most of it)

Agree partially but we expect VIC to follow the NSW path as well as they emerge - that is certainly what Dan has said, and ACT will also do whatever NSW and VIC do. Remember VIC is closed to no one right now (technically). So that is 3, they aren't alone and represent more than 50% of Australia.

NSW and VIC also have by far the best track, trace and test public health teams/systems as well so can hopefully demonstrate that this approach can work across state boundaries too to manage the spread of the virus in Australia outside of state/territory silos.

- NT seems open to progress now they are safe from their election.
- SA are wavering around a bit.
- TAS can't survive without the mainland, predominantly VIC, so will probably eventually join.
- QLD needs a new CHO with a more pragmatic and collaborative approach to move forward.
- WA forget them until March, 100% political.

My bad. Forgot about the ACT. And yes, hopefully Victoria follows the same path moving forward.

I still maintain that, at some point, we’re going to need to accept that cases happen and they’re no longer worth reporting or publishing.

Thank-you. :). We are pretty much open and have been really good with track and trace and people quarantining when alerted to problem outbreaks like the South Coast. We have to keep in line with NSW as we are surrounded by them, so it made no sense to have rules for restaurants different to ones for say Queanbeyan.

I think the “flatten the curve” thing was early on when cases were large. For some time now it’s been open up and jump on outbreaks. Tas is pretty close to opening up to other states, NT has. It’s just QLD and WA that are being silly.

I don’t have any problem with cases being published - I think most people find it reassuring and I would be more likely to go into my bunker if I didn’t have the information. I check the ACT cases daily even though the last time we had a case was early July - it’s a security blanket. Having a few cases pop up from time to time and knowing it’s being dealt with quickly is very reassuring.

No. Just as with anything that causes disease it is 100% tracking and reporting.

Though the degree of reporting can eventually decrease.

Track and report internally. As we do with everything else. These daily tweets/Facebook posts/media briefings need to end.

Sorry I’m defending NT - never had a hard border and seemingly less motivated by election. Only hotspot mandatory quarantine for all residents and travellers regardless of location in Australia, which in the context has been a reasonable middle ground. If anything in fact been less on the ball since election and been a bit slow opening

Contact tracing under way in Sydney's west

Contact tracing has commenced in south-west Sydney after three new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed earlier today.

People who attended the Fitness First Carlingford Pilates Class on Saturday October 3 from 8.15am to 9.15 am are considered close contacts and must immediately get tested and self-isolate, even if a negative test is returned.

The health department is also assessing potential exposure at several other venues. Anyone who attended the following venues at these times is considered a casual contact and should immediately isolate and get tested even if any symptoms develop.

  • Friday 2 October: Kmart, Narellan Town Centre, Narellan – 6pm to 7pm
  • Saturday 3 October: Fitness First, Carlingford (all attendees other than those in the pilates class): 8am to 9.15am
  • Sunday 4 October: Penrith Homemaker Centre, Penrith – 11am to 1pm
  • Sunday 4 October: Guzman y Gomez, Penrith – 1.30pm to 2pm
  • Sunday 4 October: Home Co, Penrith – 2pm to 2.30pm
  • Monday 5 October: Westfield Parramatta – 9.30 am to 11am
  • Monday 5 October: Castle Towers Shopping Centre, Castle Hill – 12pm to 1pm
“Testing numbers have dropped recently, which is a concern,” A NSW Health statement read.

“NSW Health renews its call for increased testing across Sydney, even if you have the mildest of symptoms like a runny nose or scratchy throat, cough, fever or other symptoms that could be COVID-19.”

I don't blame you.A rational decision.
It certainly is... separating the political out - Why would you lay down cash with a hotel, airline or tourism operator in Queensland at this time with so much uncertainty?

Meanwhile the Northern Rivers goes nuts with people booking family reunions while the GC sits just over the border missing out. Good for the NSW economy!

This is the insane part... I’m missing an engagement party in Brisbane that I was MCing. The week before, the whole wedding party (roughly 3/4 from Bris and 1/4 from Sydney) are getting together in Byron for 3 nights. Loads of cash in accommodation alone, and that’s before I’ve gone to Dans for the wine.
