Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Just going to leave a clip here from Dr Mike Ryan from WHO from earlier in the year. In particular... “If you need to be right before you move, you will never win. Perfection is the enemy of the good when it comes to emergency management.”

If you have read my posts you will know that I am an advocate of speedy action. At the start of the Vic second wave I posted that I thought restrictions were coming in too slowly. And in this outbreak in SA I have again said it was good that SA were acting quickly.

The discussion point was just that the degree of the lockdown measures (strictest in Australia since the pandemic commenced) seemed to be out of proportion to the case numbers and the information known.

Victoria reopens borders to South Australia.

Whilst, absurdly, Tasmania remains closed, or at least has a 14 day quarantine requirement for arrivals. :(

I think this gives an indication of what might happen here if there is a case actually in Tasmania - a severe, immediate lockdown a la SA recently, notwithstanding the SA Authorities acted sharply due to some startling mis-information supplied to them (a fact ignored by some). I'm stocking up tomorrow.

It is pleasing to hear Prof Spurrier explaining in more detail the rationale right now. Showing the predictive graphs etc. Very much family based which is a good thing but not for that family. On FB stream. I have heard through third party, of just one new case, so not confirmed as I missed the start, of an international traveller in quarantine. Still expecting to get cases of those in quarantine but every day that goes by is good.

There will be a case in Tasmania again at some point.
Will be cases pop up everywhere. So yes probably a good plan!

Yes, returned traveller who tested positive on day 10 of quarantine. No new cases outside of that

It’s on ABC24 they cut away from VIC because the SA ‘emergency’ is where it is all happening now ;) Finally SA steals the spotlight back :)

Yes one case for SA, already in quarantine.

The three amigos are being torched now..... actually the police commissioner is MIA so far.... after that disaster of a media conference the other day maybe he’s been told to have the day off ;)

I would have thought Sky news would be covering but nup. I'm streaming chromecast from FB on to the TV. One day we will be able to hear the questions being asked.....

I feel for the PC. He clearly wasn't excited about the bans with his sons wedding yesterday being banned. Likely pressure from the family given the reversal.

Critical week this week to check no community transmission.

I think Tas have deferred international arrivals until the new year. I've always supported us taking internationals, to do our bit, but if our government is going to react in such over-the-top ways to outbreaks in other states# then its probably better that we don't have international arrivals.

# As I mentioned up-thread, I cut them some slack when it was thought, initially, that it was a very contagious strain - something some here are ignoring - now that's been debunked and the cluster is evidently under control, no more slack! Its ridiculous that the quarantine requirement is still on foot.

Agree. As I noted up-thread, we should all be thankful that we don't have to make these decisions, not only for the responsibility for the impact they have on people but also the 'Monday morning quarterbacking' that social media experts indulge in (me included :) )

You have to keep in mind that Sky is the lowest rating news service in Australia they don’t have the $$ anymore propping them up now Foxtel has tanked as well.

Well Grumpy has made an appearance after all.
*grabs popcorn*

The police commissioner has been at every presser so far and has just spoken again today

Though it seems to have been based primarily on a higher Ro number. As this outbreak is mainly a large family group a high Ro would be expected with the cases in the cluster.

As shown in Vic Second Wave large family groups were on of the reasons for rapid growth, and certainly a reason for speedy action. Ro at the start of the second wave in Vic was higher than in the Vic first wave when mainly small households were involved.

No "smoking guns" were mentioned as being part of the modelling though, but may have been.

The one new case was an international returnee I believe.

Masks outside no longer required in Vic to be worn if not near other people, but need to put on when required (ie if near other people). See Bunnings example below ;)

  • Weddings, funerals, religious ceremonies will increase to 150 people
  • Cinemas, galleries and museums will increase to 150 people

Office:

NSW has recorded no new cases of locally transmitted COVID-19, for the 15th day in a row.

There are 11 new cases reported in hotel quarantine.

More than 12,000 people were tested in the latest reporting period.

Gladys has headed to the NSW/Vic border to celebrate the re-opening stating that “we never want to see this again”.
I hope Pushka is not a 'consultant' for Gladys!

Just look what happened when Pushka tempted fate with a similar statement last week! ;)

Isnt it great that this thread is starting to slow down. 🤞
