Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I understand your optimism, I really do. But given that say WA can't abide the thought of a single infection, and infections are still likely with the vaccine and might in some cases lead to death, then I am not sure it is entirely justified.

That's right. But we have to understand *why* the states want zero. The only reason for zero is the potentially catastrophic outcome.

Take that away and there is no need for zero.

I’m thinking we might shortly see the states gang up on the Commonwealth and we might get the remote quarantine facility many of us are asking for.
You simply can't create facilities for 10,000 people out of thin air.

And anything remote will need FIFO workers who will return to the same cities (let alone the dangers of having FIFO workers from a high risk location on the same flight).

And for those who've previously mentioned Christmas Island.
It's currently being used for other purposes (and at best might house 500 ppl in quarantine anyway)

antycbr did suggest FIFO previously - 4 weeks work, 2 weeks quarantine, 6 weeks off. economically the suggestion was to save on police, contractors (hotel, cleaners, transport) could help fund the capacity + amenities (transport, cleaners, security) - I think antycbr suggested $2-3 billion (inclusive of contribution from States) as feasible

I am sure the inbound the quarantine passengers would be on dedicated flights (direct from a domestic or foreign hub), but post-quarantine it doesn't really matter. No different to someone leaving quarantine in the centre of a major city and jumping on a tram or train, or a flight to a different city.

But I am sure there are many logistical difficulties preventing this.

Reports this morning that Queensland is going to move to mining camps for HQ.

Looks like the public service might have to come up with solutions.

The reason I suggested $2-3 billion is the most recent lockdown in NSW cost over $3 billion alone... so spending this amount will save at least $3bn in extended Jobkeeper and future jobseeker payments. For those who remember Keynesian economics the stimulus effect of this crash Commonwealth program would also apply.

My advice would be to talk to the mining industry who are used to doing this.

Though the whole thing will probably get held up getting an environmental impact statement done... there’s a decade easily.

What does 'GST on up' mean?

I only ask because you seem a stickler for facts - checking up on others etc and I'd like to know how you know that 'all' of the people and business concerned paid tax. If it wasn't true, or a bit of hyperbole its OK to say so, :) but then you may allow others the same latitude before you jump on them with a 'fact check'.

Don’t read this article if you have high blood pressure!

Disgusting behaviour from WA Health and the WA Government, locking people in rooms for 7 hours with no food, water. Not answering phone calls for 2.5 hours, shutting their office for a week and not assisting people trapped in knee jerk border decisions when they weren’t even travelling from a hot spot. Unbelievable.

So you do not know what GST is? Somehow I doubt that, though perhaps you forgot about its existence when you asked your original question?

There are a raft of taxes that individuals and companies may need to pay. GST is one aimed at ensuring that all pay tax.

GST on up means that everyone has to pay it and then after that there are a range of other taxes and excises that individuals and companies may need to pay. GST means though that all pay tax.

That is so unbelievably sad.

I couldn't even fathom being locked in a room at an airport while my mother lay dying on a hospital bed a stones throw away.

Much less being given the option of attending the funeral but only in a separate room and not grieving with close family. Honestly I think such an experience would leave most traumatised. I believe it was ScoMo in March/April 2020 that said "the cure can not be worse than the disease"

There are so many similar stories, likely thousands of them, all around the world. It might take months, maybe years, but a lot of mental health damage has been inflicted but right now the focus is on the physical. It's easier to see.

Ha ha. A complete non sequitur on my query of your claim that "they [in the context of the conversation] all pay tax". Still unanswered - what's the basis for your claim that:

The employees and other businesses all pay tax.

No AO would mean a drop in tax renvenue.

With the emphasis on "all". To affirm, I think you'd need to know the personal circumstances of all those concerned, otherwise its just an assumption. Again, I only persevere because you have frequently 'demanded' similar responses off others.

Oh, and re GST. "So you do not know what GST is?" Another non sequitur. You didn't mention GST, so the query of whether I know what GST is, is a deflecting red herring. Gosh, I even know what the WET tax is, as well as Payroll tax :)

"There are a raft of taxes that individuals and companies may need to pay. GST is one aimed at ensuring that all pay tax." My home business, although trading, does not pay or charge GST, at least for the past 2 years. Go figure. I'm pretty sure its not the only one.

There's no way you can say for sure that they "all" paid tax without knowing the tax circumstances of them all. It was an assumption stated as a fact.

Most definitely, I suppose in some places justified. The risk/response balance in this particular case is far out of kilter with reality.

The comments really sums things up nicely on the West, also gives you a pretty good indication on the very likely outcome of their state election - "All hail St Mark, our hero". 🤦‍♂️

Just heard the numbers on airline staff that go through NSW compared to WA each week. Which is 3000 for NSW and 300 for WA so huge difference in potential outbreaks form such a large amount of people.

Looked at from a practical point of view. Melbourne airport has lots of open ground around it. Queensland (and other States) has a large number of unused dongas as many of the projects have moved from construction to production.
Be a big job but it wouldn't be particularly difficult to set up a couple of large camps right next to the airport. Operate as per per FIFO, except you walk in. All staff do shifts and live on site for the duration of the shift. Camp could be broken down into sub-groups, based on arrival times and risk factors. Plenty of space, physical separation, ventilation and an easily secured perimeter.
Could even have a section for flight crews...
