Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I think the view in each state is that their own state is handling the virus best. Unfortunately some states have taken to lecturing the other states to that effect.
I think we need to take this one step and further and start looking at each region within each state.:). Central Coast region is doing remarkably well and I think it is time to remove it from anymore border discussions when it comes to Greater Sydney as we are closer to Newcastle which has no restrictions or mask wearing. As well as Newcastle is only 10 minutes away for me where as Sydney is 1 hour.

Think the issue with testing is this is the time of year where not many people have cold/flu symptoms, which is still the main reason for tests (other than those who've been to an exposure venue or otherwise notified)

Even at only 20k a day, that means over a 7-day period you are testing 1 in 40 people in Sydney.

At some point with days of 0 or no unlinked cases, that gives you a high level of confidence that there isn't undetected cases.

While true it is also true that a person being tested only means that you are checking them for a small slice of time. They may return a negative test but have had it two weeks ago, or they may catch it tomorrow. Or they may have caught it recently, but not yet have the viral load to generate a positive result In such cases the negative test today will not help with identifying a transmission chain.

So coughulatively is does not build up and is why it is important that the symptomatic continue to get tested without delay, and especially as sooner or later yet another leakage will most likely occur. Though hopefully the testing of aircrew, and daily testing of any quarantine related workers will it make less for an outbreak to grow.

"I understand the frustrations and the dislocation this is causing but even more so I understand the frustration and dislocation that another cluster outbreak in Victoria would cause," he said.

"I apologise for the dislocation that this has caused but I make no apology for the principle of keeping Victoria safe and keeping Victoria open."
Vic Health Minister quotes via The Age

I still can't believe they are somehow arguing that there is too much risk in allowing residents from Brisbane and Sydney to return but 1,200 tennis players testing negative before departing actual hotspots is somehow a consistent position.
You only have to replace the word Victoria and these words are virtually identical to those that have been said by AP and JY in QLD or Mislead Mark in WA.

As to the couple interviewed on a Current Affair last night not only did they only get 61 minutes notice of the extra quarantine but were moved to a smaller room with no balcony.
He did ask for Anastacia to talk to at least 1 person in hotel quarantine to find out the problems.
As to those in hotel quarantine in rooms with a balcony how about an instruction to keep the door closed when you have gone ouside and when you are inside.Gets over the HVAC problem.

Agreed, which is why all us QLD'ers are like 'why is everyone getting their knickers in a knot, we've been lecturing and berating NSW not to come here for almost a year now, whats the big deal' 😂

The sad new normal.

However Victoria is not open to the many Victorians who cant return from NSW and Qld but is open to Tennis players travelling from UK and USA where thousands are dying from Covid everyday?

If its safe for sports people from genuine hotspots to enter Vic and quarantine, why isnt it safe for Victorians who have been in Greater Sydney and Greater Brisbane (neither of which meet definition of a hotspot) to return and quarantine?

As much as I dislike Queensland's actions, they have never stopped Queenslanders from returning to Queensland, although have required them to pay for hotel Quarantine. Vic, SA and WA all have had poor form at different times for there not even being an avenue for their residents to return home even via paid HQ.

Andrews isnt keeping Vic open, he is locking out large numbers of his own constituents, while happily creating special rules for atheltes that present greater risk to country, dont vote for him or pay taxes in this country. He is also severly restricting people from being able to return to their offices and be open for business.

The only state that has really kept things open is NSW. The one time they closed their borders it was in consulation with Vic, and only when genuine hotspot was in play i.e. 100's of cases per day and an overwhelmed Vic contract tracing capablity. Also the first state to reopen to Victoria once things were back under control.

Well AP wasted Queensland $ on by heavily advertising holidays in Qld in Sydney when the borders were shut (better to wait til they had reopened) and now Vic is wasting money telling us that we cant go there and generating bad will for future. Invest those $ in better systems and you can actually be open and have domestic visitors spending $.

I believe at one point NSW has made their own residents undertake paid mandatory hotel quarantine when returning from Vic and made everyone come through Sydney airport

As part of the victorian border closure, yes you had to return via SYD (after the 3 days notice to come home via car was given, not the few hours given to Vic residents) and yes if coming in via SYD had to HQ but this was not charged for NSW residents. Initial indication was it was paid for anyone entering, but very quickly became paid for non NSW residents only.

Tehre was a way home.

Suspect the majority (of Vic residents) have received exemptions by now.

This isnt what is being reported.

Thousands who were stuck in regional NSW have been granted passes to enter and quarantine at home. But there is no specific exemption category for anyone who is in Greater Sydney and wants to come home, not even to volunteer to pay for HQ. They are in limbo unless they are an essential worker.

.

As of midday yesterday (so would be more now- presumably another 30K or or so as is 3.30pm Friday now):

Since the portal went live on Monday night, 105,970 permits have been issued up to midday today (Thursday).
In the past 24 hours, 23,167 applications have been processed – an average of 16 permits issued each minute.

More than 82 per cent of the permit applications have come from people coming to Victoria from Green Zone areas. Around two-thirds of the applications (67.7%) are from Victorian residents.

Around nine per cent of applications are from people in the Orange Zone areas
. The remaining applications are for worker permits or people transiting through orange and red zones.

Plus there were exemptions issued under the previous system. Not sure what the number was for that.

And unfortunately for the Qld and WA tourism industry, the risk of the borders being slammed shut and retrospective quarantine means it's going to be a very long time before I'll consider a trip again.

And remember all the tennis pros are locked up in a hotel for 14 days.
I agree, WA tourism especially is suffering, rest of economy, mining sector doing well to cover the other economic holes.

I've cancelled 2 trips to WA last few months & speaking to the few accom I had to cancel with, they were coping ok with just NSW or VIC closed, but now both over busy xmas period they are not doing well at all. local tourists hitting Broome & Marg river predominantly.

The backdating of quarantine while out of own state is the killer for many for booking trips away.

Its a great varying views on this forum, good read to be informed really. sharing of articles etc.

I don't mind the way Aus states handling covid overall, could be better & more cohesion, but I accept that's never going to happen now. States so not in sync with each other.

What goes on at National Cabinet, seems like lot of non-agreeance, does the mute button get used a lot??

NSW paid mandatory hotel quarantine requirements for domestic as at September
