Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

No community cases in NSW today, hopefully Wollongong guy wasn't much of a spreader.

We seem to have a notable uptick of infections taking place within HQ....staff and guests. And I think it's probably also fair to say that protocols in HQ are stronger than ever. So perhaps the much maligned UK variant isn't so docile after all.

I wonder how much comes from just looking harder. Catching it earlier than they would have before. In the past there have been a few cases in the community with a "where did that come from" question - now it's being picked up sooner.

Maybe, maybe not. We are doing more testing now than ever before (this is all driven by the absolute requirement of state governments of zero cases).

I wonder as this mania for zero grows and grows, and more and more controls come in to play, where the circuit breaker will be once vaccinations become available here

Vic has just announced ANOTHER positive HQ worker from Holiday Inn Mel Airport.

It's disturbing that people are getting Covid, not from their overseas travels, but from the hotel that is a Quarantine hotel where they are required to stay. I wonder the liabilities there if someone becomes seriously ill. It's happened in almost every state now?

Yea agree, everyone is literally in defcon 10 every single time this happens, although time after time after time VIC and NSW have demonstrated their tracking and tracing and rapid responses (in the case of VIC, NSW is a bit looser in line with their approach to managing clusters) are completely up to the task of controlling these minor leaks with minimal impact to the broader population.

They are going to continue happening as long as quarantine exists, which will be for months and months and months still, so can someone please tell the media just to chill out a bit and report on something more newsworthy like McGuire finally being rolled out ;)

Rumours that the hotel cleaners at Holiday Inn were given the wrong floors to do the pathogen clean up so presumably some rooms weren’t cleaned correctly.

The problem now is there is a new variant of both the SA and UK mutations.Basically all the monoclonal antibodies now authorised to treat Covid are pretty useless against this new variant and vaccines likely to be more problematic as well.

Well if that turns out to be true it really puts to the sword any idea that the Victorian system is world class.

Yes mistakes happen but they shouldn't in a program with so much funding, so much importance and ultimately so much time to have gotten it right.

Good news is that the person (returned traveller) was isolating at home, only left HQ on Sunday and only left her home to get a test.

So hopefully only some close family contacts (if any) to deal with.

Haven't seen an update on the worker yet.

And as a precaution, all Holiday Inn HQ returnees that have left HQ now have to retest and isolate for another 14 days regardless of the result.... poor things!

Yes and no. The no part being that the new strains are more transmissible, but there are different views on how much more transmissible it is.

Early on in HQ people were just released with no testing. The presumption being that if they were infected that they were infected on entry. A concern now being that more people seem to be getting infected during HQ who are not staying in the same room.

Also with the new UK/SA Strains it may also be that people stay positive, and possibly infectious for longer.

However a positive test may not mean that people are still infectious. This would not possibly so for someone who caught the virus well into their quarantine though.

A resident of the Hotel Quarantine facility at Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport has tested positive to coronavirus (COVID-19) after completing their 14-day quarantine.

The individual tested negative a number of times during her quarantine period and departed the facility on 7 February. She sought testing in response to the current outbreak at the Holiday Inn, returning a positive result today, 9 February.

Interviews with the individual are underway. Early indications are that the individual has not left her home since exiting Hotel Quarantine on 7 February, other than to obtain a test in a COVIDsafe setting.

Updates to exposure site locations (if any), primary close contacts and other information will be provided as soon as possible. Primary close contacts will include past residents of the Holiday Inn who completed their quarantine period on 7 February.

They will be required to isolate for 14 days. We are in contact with this group. This will come as difficult news to them, but we are being as cautious as possible in our response to this outbreak.

Sure, except for hotel workers, like the current cases. No mystery of source there, past or present.
