WA Premier demands federal government help with returned traveller quarantine

WA Premier Mark McGowan has again requested the Commonwealth government step in and help states provide quarantine for arrivals, saying the current hotel quarantine system was set up in a rush.

He said various immigration facilities and army barracks could be operated as quarantine bases that provided more security than the current hotel system.

“If the Commonwealth could activate those facilities it would be a terrific assistance to a complex problem,” he said.

He said the problem was the Commonwealth did not want to assist.

He has a good point there.

That I would agree with. Doesn't explain why the states are suddenly up in arms about it.

The program seems fine, lax infection control, poor PPE standards and lack of technological innovation in security approach are the clear and obvious problems which have not been effectively addressed. Both levels of government to blame for that.

I think state premiers initially thought this was short term, Feds weren't doing enough (well anything really) so they said they would do it even though always a fed responsibility.

It's now dragging on, lasting a lot longer than expected (and likely to continue for some considerable time), costing a lot and they think the Federal government should now take charge of what was really always their responsibility. I also doubt from what I have heard that this has 'suddenly' become an issue, they have been raising concerns for some time. Scommo wouldn't play ball so they have now gone public rather than having those conversations in private.

if anyone asks for help, should be Gladys, NSW has been taking lion share of the returned travellers ....

[Cynical hat on head] Gladys doesn't have to worry so much. She has Uncle Rupert on her side. Media coverage of any slip ups is rational, as it should be, rather than dramatised to the nth degree [\removes cynical hat]

Apart from the cynical viewpoint, I guess NSW has been lucky in some regards. If the cleaner or bus driver who contracted the virus from HQ had worked in a coffee shop at the airport, or had tested a false negative and gone to a function with 40 people whilst infectious, she might been in a different situation to, and asking for help too.

I've heard of false positives but not false negatives, until the last couple of days. Type 2 error, worst kind in a pandemic.

False negatives are not unheard of .... from what I've read sampling technique plays a part, stage of infection etc etc. Even with tiny false negative rate (say 0.01%) ... that would mean 1400 false negatives in Australia during the course of the pandemic. Probably someone with more experience in this field could offer a more thorough explanation, and what is normal.

Bronze standard... to be fair I would probably walk out of the Ibis as well ;)

How exactly did she escape?!

Oh and private security 😆

Whoopsies!

Woman caught by Tasmanian Police after leaving Hobart hotel quarantine in a taxi with child

Tasmania Police said the woman had travelled to Hobart with her young child yesterday before leaving the Ibis Hotel at 6:20pm in a taxi.

Contact tracers from Tasmania's Public Health Service are now working to identify any other movements or contacts during the time they were out of quarantine.

In a statement, Assistant Commissioner Jonathan Higgins said "Appropriate contact tracing and quarantining of any further contacts will be immediately implemented if required," he said.

Tasmania's hotel quarantine is monitored by private security firms.

Did anyone else see Leigh Sales interview Andrews on Monday? Brilliant grilling, he kept contradicting himself or was unable to provide credible answers, nearly choked when he tried to say locking down an entire state was proportionate even though no mystery cases and no real spread outside family or close friends. New favourite lineseems to "this isnt the 2020 virus" when in fact it is, the UK variant was around before xmas, and nothing has chnaged since 2020 wrt health guidelines for protecting oneself from infection.

I would think easier to wear a hoodie and wrap a scarf/travel towel/ tshirt around fwce than trying to walk blindly in a garbage bag, its not like themedia being outside was unexpected even if it was unecessary.

The comment about Gladys and Murdoch is rubbish, her press coverage equally favourable in the Fairfax media and ABC, because she is pragmatic and cares about the mental health of NSW and giving business certainty. People living in NSW have far greater trust that things will be managed and things stay more open than what they see happening in other states. And returning Aussies are less likely to experience a last min flight cancellation if flying into Sydney than Melbourne.

The way Andrews denided Aussies needing to return home, despite lobbying the feds to hold AO explains why his media treatment is less favourable, he rarely shows any compassion.

The original media report of the false negative implied that it wasnt a failure of the test but a misinterpretation of the results (human error), as when the same data was reviewed they determined a weak positive. But suits govt narrative more now to say bad test.
