Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Dunno where he gets his facts but the restrictions on movements of people in the Northern Beaches did not remotely approach 3 months! It was 3 weeks and affected 250k people, which is 1/10th of the people affected by the 3 day lockdowns in greater Perth.

The only restriction that went for 3 months inside NSW following NB outbreak was the need to wear a mask on PT - I seriously doubt that mask wearing resulted in significant economic loss he is claiming.

Most of the economic damage was actually caused by other states (WA at the forefront) unnecessarily over reacting and closing their borders to the whole state of NSW as a result, instead of properly using the hotspot definitions which should have only prevented those from NB and anyone who had visited an exposure site.

I caught part of the presser last night and he said something along the lines of NSW keeps opening then having to lock down like London, I gagged. As this isn't true at all. There was the initial lockdown in March 2020 (which was pretty much national) and then two hotspot focussed movement restrictions firstly in NB for 3 weeks over xmas and then the Northern Rivers for 3 days (due to Brisbane hens night).

He fails to acknowledge the only reason WA economy is doing better than most is due to mining, the WA tourism is suffering just as much (if not more than) those in other states - as they have locked out domestic travelers for more of the last year than anywhere else in Aus. he also never mentioned how much WA lost because NSW residents cancelled xmas travel plans to WA (this wont have been immaterial).
And being so remote, mining continued unabated and simply shipped out across the world without any impact.

In no way is my following comment partisan.

I think it is accurate to say that one of the biggest fears in WA, apart from Covid getting into indigenous communities, is actually it getting into mining camps. It's not just the government. The companies are very hot on it, running their own testing prior to staff heading onto swing in at least some instances.

Perhaps one of the bigger fears amongst that is Covid getting onto an offshore gas platform. My nephew's fiance is FIFO on a Woodside platform. About this time last year, she had to do two weeks iso at Port Hedland or one of those onshore towns before going out for her normal 2-week swing. So the result was her swing became 4 weeks away from home. I don't know how long that went on for.

I make no comment and pass no opinion on the right or wrong of what's happened in WA. It is what it is and we have to suck it up.

Just making the observation that perhaps the remoteness of the mining is counterintuitively perhaps a particular greater worry for the various decision-makers.

I appreciate that however, I'd argue it's even more inconvenient if you're forced to self-isolate or in the case of yesterday's incident now considered being at a "venue of concern".
Maybe just rectify the situation, rather than escalate the complexity by pushing travellers hours distant. Having dealt with BAC, I know them to be a competent organisation and in this case a contrite one as well. There was a problem and they will have already fixed it.

Thanks. I understand that. My Nephew and his family live and work in a remote WA Mining facility with Rio. Makes sense. A classic case of strongest/weakest asset.

Better late than never, official app been mandatory in otherstates including ACT and NSW since December.

Unless there is a cost involved I don't know why so many places don't use the Government one. Most times it takes a few clicks and your done.

No cost, the govt apps free for the business to register for and use (only cost is print off a few qr codes and stick on tables, wall, door etc). And advantage of details going straight to state contract tracers no need for them to request from business if there is a case, so saves time.

Queensland just very late to provide an official app and even later to mandate its use.

Its good thing, but shouldnt just be for hospitality venues, but also gyms, sporting venues etc.

Victoria still hasn’t got it either. Is a bit of a PITA and would be handy if all venues were on the official Service Victoria app

As I’ve mentioned before, the sign in App for SA is required - everywhere.

Agree with that. Otherwise it feels like a marketing tactic where separate stores gather names and contact details.

Required, but very loosely policed if at all. But to be honest, its loose everywhere now. Have just been in Syd and Adl and in not one restaurant/bar was I asked. But seems to be the norm now.
It's very random then. We were in Sydney two weeks ago and we were constantly asked to sign in. This was around Bondi. But masks at the Sydney airport? Even some security weren't bothering.

I am also in ADL at the moment and have to concur, while the app is great and universal, the enforcement has loosened up a lot from stories I have heard from visitors just weeks ago. I was told we would be asked to show our sign-ins to venues, we weren't even asked at the airport to show that we had signed in however I suspect if anyone noticed you just walking by the big QR code totem polls without looking like you'd attempted to, you'd be asked to show proof.

Still, for somewhere with so few cases overall, I have witnessed pretty good self compliance at most venues, but zero enforced compliance. Perhaps it has just become self-policing already.

No longer having that sheet of paper at the door, showing name/phone number/address.

The entertaining part was watching everyone checking out that list on arrival.

WA Premier just about to give an update - rumours of another case.
There was a positive test from an infant who is the son of a previously reported case, I suspect that is the basis of the update

Oh dear

“Following three emergency meetings today, Premier Mark McGowan has announced that this morning a security guard in his 20s who works in hotel quarantine tested positive to COVID-19.
He had already had a vaccination. He and his housemates have been moved into hotel quarantine.
Mr McGowan said he may have been infectious in the community.
Case 1001 lives in Nollamara, and during his potentially infectious period he lived with seven housemates. Two have returned positive test results as well.
One of these cases is a visitor from Canberra.”
