Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I guess time will tell. You characterise it as panic, I characterise that as hyperbole. But you are entiltled to your opinion - I dont have to agree with it.

Time has told. This started in March. It’s now November. The plan was to “flatten the curve” while systems were put in place to manage this. That has been done. In all jurisdictions.

As a specialist, I’ve had the ability to continue traveling state to state (albeit with restrictions) for the better part of the year. I’m quite glad that I live in NSW that clearly remains the only state that has achieved exceptional management of the virus. Even the smallest cafe in Sydney has a solid tracing system in place. The same can’t be said for other states that dedicated all their efforts to keeping others out.

To an extent, we are all entitled to our opinion. Working for the federal government at the moment, I could challenge that notion. But that doesn’t make the opinion right. In the case of many, yourself included, the only opinion you seem to have in regards to this pandemic is “get out of my town!”. As I said, it’s xenophobic based panic unsurprisingly strongest in Queensland and WA.

The amount of time, money and resourcing wasted on border closures is hard to fathom. Had that effort been applied to managing the pandemic in a sustainable manner, we wouldn’t be in this position.

From ABC News:

NSW decides to keep its border open to South Australia

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian says: "We need to learn to live with COVID. You can't shut down border and disrupt lives every time there is an outbreak and disrupt businesses. We need to have confidence, not just in our own system, but the system in other states to be able to get on top of the virus."

Can we clone this lady and put her in charge of all the states? How the hell did someone with common sense and logic get elected?

PS: Still gonna cheer for Maroons on Wed. :p

From ABC News:

Queensland shutting to South Australia from midnight

Queensland has become the latest state to shut out South Australians.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed Adelaide was now listed as a hotspot in Queensland and the sunshine state would be shutting its southern neighbours out from 11.59pm tonight.

Any South Australian who arrives in Queensland from midnight onwards will be required to complete two weeks in hotel quarantine.

Recent arrivals currently in Queensland will need to get a coronavirus test.

Queensland's chief health officer Dr Jeanette Young said Adelaide will now need to have 28 days of no community transmission to lose its hotspot classification.

It's scary how quickly she slams the border shut. If we hadn't spent big on renovations, I was looking at a trip to Kangaroo Island just for a few days. We could have been stranded through no fault of our own or forced into $3000 quarantine bill. :(This instability with the borders will kill any domestic tourism. I wish they would stop the over-reactions, just deal with the local cases and let people get on with their lives.

2 confirmed cases at AnglicareSA Brompton Aged care facility
I was wondering which one. Brompton is close to the city now. It seems the members of family work in the city but most social activities are done in the north.

I hope state premiers are proud of themselves.

I’m at the airport and it’s chaos. People have rocked up in the hundreds to try and get switched to a earlier flight so they can get home and avoid hotel quarantine. One of our management team only arrived from Brisbane last night and was going home this arvo and now has to self isolate when he gets back for 2 weeks. Better than hotel quarantine but not ideal

Completely agree... and it is pretty clear some states have kicked back and not done a lot these last 8 months....

Honestly, we aren't privvy to the medical advice right maybe it can be justified, I don't know. SA have caught this really late, remember alot of this was days and days ago...

I wouldn't mind the QLD border being slammed shut quickly if they would open them up with the same quick flexibility - but they don't, they meet only monthly to even consider a plan let alone activate one. NT's model is a better one, reviewing every week or SA for that matter who meet twice a week to review border restrictions...

You can be guaranteed SA will be locked out until 2021 now because of QLD's "monthly meeting rule".

I’m at a medical specialist’s clinic in Hobart. They have taken down the Perspex shields at the front counter. “They’ll go back up if we get a case.”
A bit surprising!

Maddening, but it is EXACTLY the same up here in QLD. People have SWITCHED off and its partly the government's fault because they have released restrictions so much it feels like normal.

We are one hotel breach away from EXACTLY the same thing happening in Perth, Brisbane, Hobart you name it....

Don't people get it by the time a case rocks up its 2 weeks too late to put their perspex shields back up?

Yep. And again, Queensland and WA have been the worst in my view. That said, I did have lunch in Adelaide last week and there was no sign of any form of checkin system.

The interesting aspect in Queensland hasn’t just been the behavior but also the attitude. I’ve lost track of the number of times someone’s remarked “oh you’re from NSW, it’s real bad down there” as they conduct themselves with absolutely zero COVID-safe protocols. They’ve been told it’s a “foreign, imported virus” and sadly many seem to think that’s as simple as it is.

Temporary suspension of international flights to SA

Also TAS has shifted to mandatory quarantine for those from SA
