Still digesting it. We have plans for a drink and dinner with friends tonight at the UWA Club, and we are carrying on with that, assuming they will stay open for this evening. But it is a uni, so prone to catastrophisation...

My younger son was planning a gathering with a bouncy castle in a park tomorrow for my grandy's 5th birthday, so that's off.

Apart from that, it's going to be warm over the weekend, so I want to get to the beach. Might get there solo. I'll see how it plays out.

If the three days doesn't snap it, we could be screwed. The infected bloke seemed to roam around a fair bit (why does that always seem to be the case? )

But considering I have had zero enforcement of whether I do or do not have a pass when entering Victoria, I wouldn't be surprised if many never applied.

For my SYD-MEL flight earlier this week there were people checking Victoria travel passes on entering the terminal at MEL.

I had the same on sunday, as I was about to enter the terminal I noticed it was getting congested and could then see a bunch of people in yellow vests asking for permits. Only took a few seconds to get my paper work out but I gathered many didn't have it and they where saying you could do it online. For some reason I thought they would make an announcement on the plane beforehand.

On my flight it was announced before disembarkation, but only because one of the people in the vests came to the aircraft door to ask for the announcement to be made. Since I had a tight connection I was glad I had my pass readily accessible. First off the aircraft, 2 seconds to check, and I was on my way.

On a slightly more serious note... place your bets on which state/territory will shut to WA first. My money is actually on VIC.

Bummer I was a bit off.

Tasmania was the first one to shut to WA, NT next, and then QLD. VIC is "monitoring the situation" and NSW doesn't shut borders.

Still waiting for SA, ACT, and our newest state NZ.

Back to T1 to depart on QF, no checks.

Didn't even see any checks for the arrival flight. They got off and no checks.

So of those 3 examples, it is only the first, the arrival that should have been checked.

However having said maybe they are randomly checking flights, rather than all flights?


With the system I think the main point is to gather the data, and so hopefully people submit the form regardless.

Well I spoke too soon.That Dr.JY is now saying we have to isolate as per the WA restrictions.All arrivals from PER since 17/4
Fortunately did our shopping yesterday and had no plans going out this long weekend.

Totally agree @dajop, and as I’ve said before I’m surprised there isn’t more outrage when people are infected because of forced HQ. People are being charged good money to be placed in a worse situation than they were when they started out. It’s clearly not treated as if it is a medical situation - “first do no harm” obviously does not apply to the people in quarantine.

Agree. Its almost like an unwritten law that you are simply lucky to be in Australia so lump the consequences.

South Australia may be the exception with SA Police even patrolling the Qantas club for mask adherence.

Bubble is closed for WA. NZ is not accepting arrivals (a flight due to depart PER-AKL was stopped before leaving), and those who have recently been in WA are required to be tested and self-isolate.

My parents are extremely disappointed and bewildered at the decisions. Shutting down all businesses over a long weekend AGAIN.

Yet the basketball can go ahead tonight? For what reason can thousands of people gather indoors (masks or no masks) yet cafes, restaurants, hospitality are completely ruined over yet another long weekend.

Like in SA. Anzac Day memorials, outside, limited to 1000 and ticketed. Quiet and respectful. AFL. Limited to 50,000 fans screaming.

I was more worried about catching Covid when I was in HQ than anywhere else!

and... compare it to the UK or the US. If you still think AU is a joke then you need to better look at what the rest of the world is doing or has done.

First of all the risk tolerance continues to change due to the more vulnerable being vaccinated (this was very clear from the offset). If you're referring to different states' "application of risk" then it's fair to say no one has got it right. Mid last year NSW/VIC were willing to accept way too much risk (and the results of that arguably showed in VIC hence they're now much stricter) but also in NSW parts of Sydney spent Christmas in lockdown, I wonder how different it would have looked if they'd taken a much harder approach? If you're referring to thousands in a stadium vs a march through a CBD, one is much higher risk and it's quite obvious which one it is.

Hotel quarantine is a big mistake full stop but what better have they got? Hotels were never designed to house sick people hence it's hardly surprising that this is the case with spread amongst them. The only reason why they used hotels is that in the early days people couldn't understand the simple instruction to stay at home for 14 days (100s of cases of people going out to eat, a quick duck down to the shops etc). In the early days, other countries like Taiwan, China or Singapore made it work by using tracing wristbands etc but people continued to try and find ways around it (or have others over) which means all of them have now almost completely shifted to hotel quarantine.
