Australian state border restrictions

And I think you're wrong on public opinion. Just look at Sydney and Melbourne. People are over it. They are more afraid of the government (lockdowns) than the virus.
I agree on this part but I don’t agree on the International travel part. I just get the feeling that people would be happy for Australia to be open domestically with no lockdowns or restrictions but aren’t too fussed about international travel for now. I think the majority still favour things like incoming passenger caps, quarantine etc.
I hope that attitudes are changing but I fear they aren’t

It’s already been decided. It won’t be an election issue. It will be up to the states as to how they implement it.

I actually think it’s far more likely for WA to be closed to NSW at Christmas and NSW to be open to Singapore and maybe the UK. The other states don’t get a vote, this plan has already been approved.

The risk of travellers from NSW to other states is just as high if not higher than the risk of travellers from the USA to Australia.

Reality is that one case will lead to a widespread outbreak, we know that for certain. So domestic travel happening but not international is not going to make much of a difference to covid cases. I'd say it's got much more of a bearing on where hospitals are at.

Just look at Sydney and Melbourne. People are over it. They are more afraid of the government (lockdowns) than the virus. Might be a different situation in the smaller states, but I wouldn't think by much.

I can't speak for Sydney, but if what you state was true there would be a lot more flagrant rule breaching everywhere in Melbourne and there simply is not.

The bulk of the people are by and large following the rules.

The odd engagement party and stupid pub crawl does not alter that.

Yes everyone wants life to get back to near normal again and yes everyone is tired of restrictions etc, but the bulk of the population can see the light at the end of the tunnel and understand that unfortunately it will be at least 2 or 3 months yet of vaccinating to get there.

They may grumble about the restrictions, but most people while they do not like them, know that it needs to be done and do it.

The finish line beckons. I am not sure how quickly we will reach it, but I would be very confident that all the New Years Eve Parties this year will be in full swing and the only masks will be if you are having fancy dress theme.

Annastacia Palaszczuk threatens lockdown as NSW says no to ‘moving’ border

Frustrated and locked out border residents have been dealt a major blow after NSW officially rejected a Queensland government proposal to temporarily move the border.

Thousands of Coolangatta-Tweed residents are stuck either side of the border and unable to commute to businesses and even schools after Queensland slammed the border shut because of a major Covid-19 outbreak in NSW.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk requested the border checkpoints be allowed to be set up at the Tweed River, effectively quarantining a section of NSW off from the rest of the state.

However, a representative from the Premier’s office confirmed today that NSW had officially declined Queensland’s request to move the border.

Ms Palaszczuk reiterated that the entire state of NSW, including northern border towns like Tweed Heads, were under stay-at-home orders, and that’s “what they need to do”.

“I make no apologies for keeping Queenslanders safe. The sooner they (NSW) can get on top of their issues, the sooner we can get back to some sort of normality.”

I wasn’t talking about compliance. You only have to hear the commentators on TV from both cities to hear the fatigue in their voices. Melbourne comedian Jimmy Rees also illustrates it very well. 200 days in lockdown for Melbourne today, that hurts by any standard.

I hope you’re right about NYE. I have no doubt we’ll get there in terms of vaccinations, I just hope the premiers play their part. Less worries about NSW and VIC on that front.

Why doesn't she move the border north in to her own state.

Lunatic stuff. Next we'll have state armies standing guard.

Oh wait...

I just don’t know how it would have worked.

Would NSW POL patrol the border? How about no.

Would QLD POL patrol the checkpoint inside NSW? Yeah, still no.

What if people in Tweed want to go to Ballina or vice versa? Very unfair to stop that just so some people can get into Queensland.

AP asked because she knew Gladys would say no. Now she can say “I tried my hardest but she said no”.

Tomorrow's Hobart Mercury Front Page - "No Jab No Entry" - "Calls for Mandatory Vaccination to Enter State". The tourism wants travellers to the state to be vaccinated only, once 80% of the Tasmanian population has been vaccinated.

They could be waiting a while. Jab rate numbers there are flatlining if not falling at 55% 1st dose mark. They’ll probably be lucky to crack 65%?

You are kidding yourself if you think 1 state will open to International travel before any election.
Um, it’s a Federal call. Australia will open up to countries, or it won’t. But without a consensus of States in favour, won’t likely happen. There is form there.
the national plan that (supposedly) all the leaders agreed on
IIRC the leaders all agreed very recently that lockdowns would be a last resort. How’s that agreement going? National Cabinet agreements have a smoke and mirrors element to them and my confidence in Scomo’s national plan is limited.

Sorry, rather arbitrary selection of quotes. There was also a comment about megolamaniac (state premiers). No they’re not. They poll assiduously, but not much of the polling is coming out. If the punters say ‘FFS shut the borders’ expect that to be translated into a recant on any prior agreement.

Entirely consistent with my straw poll of the local QCWA. Consensus was that AP was not tough enough and the border to NSW should be closed altogether. As the interstate case numbers rise, so do the hysteria levels. Don’t shoot me, I’m just a messenger.

cheers skip.

Sorry but you’re completely wrong here. The NZ bubble was an agreement at the federal levels, it did not require consensus from the states. However, the states were given the power to decide whether they would permit arrivals or not.

The plan speaks to adding countries to the list, so there’s no reason why the states would need to approve, especially as they’ve already approved to the principle and would be given the choice whether to allow arrivals into their state or not. Like NZ, they’ll probably watch NSW go first and join them once their confidence increases.

I think it is easier for NSW to open up to countries now that every state (I think - I can't really keep up) has closed their border with NSW.

When NSW joined the NZ bubble Dan Andrews had a heart attack when Kiwis flew into Sydney and then took internal flights to Melbourne as Victoria had not joined the bubble. That would still be possible as NSW don't check permits of who is getting on the planes but once in Melbourne these arrivals would be fined and placed in HQ or 'deported' back to NSW so less likely to be a major problem. Of course when it happens DA would still have a heart attack and harangue NSW Govt for not checking Victorian permits but that is just par for the course now.

I think I’ve said a few times that locking down areas with no incidence of covid, is akin to the boy calling wolf. Eventually people stop listening. The argument is probably quite different in places were it has been widespread. The Victorian side of the border has undergone multiple lockdowns, thankfully never of the magnitude of Melbourne’s, even though most of the areas have never had a case. The only ones that ever happened in the Mildura area were a result of the government stupidly allowing mass crowds at football, and it must have been almost a given that allowing such crowds would be a disaster.

The border has effectively been closed for over a year, with varying degrees of enforcement, ranging from machine gun posts to wide open. People aren’t necessarily seeing light at the end of the tunnel, simply because these damn politicians will not commit to doing anything at a particular vaccination level. As for compliance, I see widespread low level breaching, from people who rigidly obeyed it six months ago.

The Federal Govermment won’t call an election at any time earlier than he has to. Unless he can show solid progress in opening the country, he’ll get his marching orders. Right now, many of us would help him pack his bags. The opposition don’t have to present as a viable alternative. We all think they’d be as bad, if not worse, but elections are lost by incumbent governments, not won by the alternative

There are signs that Victoria is failing to contain the virus. 30 new infections out in the community for part of their infectious period is heading in the wrong direction.

The numbers may not get to the Sydney levels but it’s looking like Melbourne may be in lockdown and shut off from other states till vaccination rates increase significantly similar to Sydney:

On the radio this morning they reckon with the state election next March and our doona brigade here that we won't be opening to anyone even at 80%.

Why would people in Tweed travel over an hr south to a town of 26k? It's not some people, it's the majority.

The vast majority of those living just inside NSW are accessing services / work / infrastructure in the Gold Coast, a city of over half a million. Hell the QLD electricity grid also includes substations north of the Tweed river in NSW, so I think the region's link to QLD is a little closer than Ballina / Lismore or any other northern NSW regional town.

Good friends of ours in Bilambil are struggling massively with the loss of work and access to the Gold Coast. Gladys doesn't give a flying about those people.

Yes, but those people decided to live in NSW and work in QLD (or reverse) and maybe we didn't foresee those risks, but that's just how it is.

It's a very different prospect to split families who are both completely within NSW, or people from their jobs etc.

Not to mention the smaller towns like Kingscliff who rely on Tweed for their major services.

Interestingly, I haven't heard Victoria ask to move the border north of Albury?
