Annastacia Palaszczuk threatens lockdown as NSW says no to ‘moving’ border
Frustrated and locked out border residents have been dealt a major blow after NSW officially rejected a Queensland government proposal to temporarily move the border.
Thousands of Coolangatta-Tweed residents are stuck either side of the border and unable to commute to businesses and even schools after Queensland slammed the border shut because of a major Covid-19 outbreak in NSW.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk requested the border checkpoints be allowed to be set up at the Tweed River, effectively quarantining a section of NSW off from the rest of the state.
However, a representative from the Premier’s office confirmed today that NSW had officially declined Queensland’s request to move the border.
Ms Palaszczuk reiterated that the entire state of NSW, including northern border towns like Tweed Heads, were under stay-at-home orders, and that’s “what they need to do”.
“I make no apologies for keeping Queenslanders safe. The sooner they (NSW) can get on top of their issues, the sooner we can get back to some sort of normality.”
