re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

Got through to the credit card bit and the internet dropped out... logged back on and the day i want is gone!!! AHHH

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

Interesting phenomena discovered...

Picked another day... went through to the credit card stage... opened a new browser and the ticket I am trying to book shows as gone now...

So perhaps it takes it from the inventory as soon as you start putting your details into the booking...

I wonder if the previous date I was trying to book will return back to the inventory!?

Not sure whether to proceed with a different less than ideal date now or just wait and see if it comes back!

Yes, pretty sure that's what the LM website does...it doesn't wait until payment.

Hopefully it comes back!

In the interim, booked a couple of days later... happy to wear $100 to cancel booking and redeposit the miles should the preferred day come back.

This happened to me once a couple of years back.

I was in the middle of putting in the pax names then pressed proceed to the payment page and as I pressed that button I realised that I misspelt one of the names. So I tried to go back and got the error page, i thought no worries lets start again. I was fortunate that I took note of the PNR as when I tried to find the seats again they were gone.

As I wasn't flexible on date and it had to be THAT date, I called up the delightful chaps at the LM support line in Colombia, gave them the PNR and they were able to release the seats back into inventory for me to try again and in the end it all worked out.

That took a couple of days to come back. I have had bookings that timed out before I got to the payment section (due to dithering) that came back within a few hours.

Awesome thanks for the heads up.

I'm totally impatient... so booked a flight a couple of days later.... guess I'll just have to tell the boss we're staying in Tokyo longer!

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

Hi guys,

I need to come home from BCN early next year and for the BCN-SIN sector and I am finding availability on the dates I need on two airlines in J. TK via IST or LX via ZRH.

From what I've heard, these are both quality airlines in J, though I am yet to try either (though did try TK in Y and was impressed).

On this route LX operates its 343 which is said to be its flagship and TK operates a 333 which also offers fully flat bed seating albeit in a 2-2-2 config as opposed to LX's 1-2-1.

So which is better out of the two in terms of:

*Seating/comfort
*Food/service
*Lounges at their base (I've tried TKs IST lounge which I thought for a J lounge was phenomenal - how is LXs ZRH lounge ?)
*IFE

Thanks guys, look forward to comments and feedback from those who have tried one or the other of these two airlines, or, preferably, both.

Cheers

I would go for TK.

1. Seating/comfort:
- LX has staggered layout vs TK which uses an ottoman. In my experience, I prefer ottoman over staggered layout because you actually have more foot space. The problem with staggered is your foot has to go inside a little foot cubby and if you are like me that likes to bend and cross the legs while sleeping, you are likely to hit your leg on the ceiling of the foot well. Not so much problem with ottoman. But of course, being a 2-2-2 layout, you have the inconvenience of people climbing over you or you climb over others. I personally prefer direct aisle access, so I just pick the middle 2.
- Also you need to take BCN-ZRH/IST segment into consideration (which is still a few hours). LX uses the usual intra-European business class, which is just economy class with middle seat blocked. You actually don'y get extra leg room. Whereas TK uses 2-2 recliners for their short haul, so its similar to QF/VA domestic business or US domestic first.
2. Food/service:
- Again TK wins here. TK catering is done by Do & Co, and they really do an excellent job.
3. Lounge:
- TK's lounge in IST is one of the best in the world. However, you may end up with a remote gate in IST so if you have lots of carry-ons it may be a problem.

Overall, I think there is a reason why TK has won Skytrax's "best European airline" award. I know many people say Skytrax is biased, but it is up to you whether to believe it or not. If anything that is against TK is that its safety record is not as good as LX.

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

Only tried TK J and was impressed but having said that, if traveling solo I would select LX 1-2-1 based on their reputation and single seat privacy.

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

I'd probably go for TK as well. While I haven't had the pleasure of either long haul in business class... the full forward facing seats on TK (if they are in fact full lie flats) would be preferable, and knowing LX's penchant for 'sophisticated yet understated', I think TK would win on lounges, food etc.

I agree with taking an aisle seat in the middle block of two if choosing TK.

Note however that not all short haul TK flights are operated with 2-2 wide-seating in business class. This only applies to their A320 and 321 aircraft. Their 737-800s, and A319s are regular economy with middle seat blocked. For BCN flights they seem to operate A320s/321s, but keep an eye out in case they change. They also operate an A330 on selected flights.

Has anyone seen availability of SAA PER-JNB? There used to be heaps and I can still see them on UA website, but LM shows nix.

Ok looks like TK wins then - thanks guys.
I'll be travelling with my brother to hopefully see a few EPL/La Liga games - can't wait !

What dates are you searching. I suspect it is SAA blocking it, not LM, as I can't find any on ANA either, which is known to be more accurate. United can be a bit lagging in their system.

I looked at 7 June for 4 J seats PER-JNB and they are clearly there on UA, but not getting anything on LM. Wasn't that long ago that there were heaps on offer. Just was hoping another airline hadn't restricted its award seats...

Definitely not with ANA on that date. Looks like another airline has followed EVA and SQ by being generous for a year, then stingy with Australian route.
