re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

I looked into J for SYD-BKK and most of it were 747's. Didn't come across any 787's. Are J's on 747's that bad?? Should I fork out more for F's? I've not flown TG before..

still only TG J, or possibly, with screenshots, maybe SQ J... but I wouldn't count on the Singapore airlines. There is supposed to be a restriction on sales... no flights available unless 14 before travel. Now some have been successful outside that period... but I wouldn't buy miles counting on it.

TG business class is best avoided on the 747 or in fact any aircraft out of Australia except the 787. And for business or first, the infant still has to pay 10% of the full published fare.

Yes, TG J on B747 is that bad! Adding another 20K miles to fly F is a no brainer IMO. The gap between J and F on TG is huge both in terms of hard and soft products.

TG currently operates B787s to PER and soon to BNE.

Agree with boomy! Spend the extra for F (works out to a couple hundred dollars each way over business and actually worth a lot more than that)

Excellent value for Asia - just a pity about screen-shotting :(

Slightly OT - I've been arranging several trips to Asia in the next few weeks - availability is very tight and fares sky-high. I dunno why. There were no Air China seats in business class this weekend MEL-PVG for example (no revenue seats FRI/SAT/SUN). Qantas was asking for $6300+ to Shanghai. Finally ended up with SQ, but a couple of their flights AU-SIN are already sold out in business and first. In a couple weeks even Sichuan Airlines to China, normally pretty cheap, is in the $3400+ range.

There are a smattering of CA award seats, but have to do screen shot.

Yeah the screenshot is a pain but sometimes just got to do it! Worst comes to worst I just buy a revenue fare to MNL... in this case it looks like $160 on Kuwait Airways!!

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

when they revised their charts last year i think it got better for aussies! loving how south asia is more expensive / same price as north asia..

Only North/South Asia and EU J/Hawaii J (small drop) I believe. EU F up 10k and US J up 12.5k or F up 18.5k (F is difficult to get anyway). The rest increased as well.

North Asia doesn't make sense but I love it :D Would be perfect if ANA offered F!

787s for Perth and Brisbane I think. Not sure if they are in service yet. Even flat beds on 787s, Thai put 6 seats per row lol

J on THAI 747's is terrible in my opinion. I would pay more for F. To cover the difference, drink a bottle of Dom Perignon and have Caviar/Lobster :D I only use United miles for this route though since they allow free stopover on return ticket and cost less if around 2c per mile or less.

Well I've learned something! I thought the TG 787 was the same configration/lay-out as their 77Ws. 2-2-2 is actually not too bad width-wise on a 787. But the angled look-over-the-shoulder-of-your-neighbour configuration seems off-putting.

Although they manage to squeeze in 24 seats that way compared to 18 on Air India and Royal Brunei with their full-forward facing seats.

For those who've tried it - what's it actually like? Are you in fact looking over the shoulder of your neighbour? (Or have your neighbour overlooking you?)

How many bottles do you think they load on TG F, SYD-BKK? That famous Macabus '8 bottles of Dom' trip report springs to mind!

At least three for the BKK-SYD flight ;) *

And I would take that tale with a pinch of salt.

*Not all me!

On my recent flight last week there were only 3 pax in F and I was consuming non-stop Dom all the way apart from ~3 hours nap between drinks. Plenty of caviar left after first serve to nibble with champagne later :)

no idea but they never run out on my flights :D I usually have at least a bottle myself.

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

did many of you buy miles?

I passed as well, even with the 145% promotion. Maybe at 160% promotion I will think about it ;)

That said, I have been saying that I would bite if UA had 50% - but last month they had that promo, and I still passed  This month, their promo is slightly worse off so I guess I'll definitely be sitting on the sideline again.

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

I passed too. Still got balance left over from last year because I couldn't be bothered doing the screenshots.

Not too bad, but definitely not as private. As a solo traveller it felt like the next person was *just* too far into my personal space for comfort. Especially in the middle seats.

Maybe China's National Day holiday? October 1 - 7.
Avoid if possible.
Travel during that time and each side it is hideous: half a billion people on the move.

actually the reverse it seems :(. The QF fares for this weekend were in the $6300+ range, but for the week encompassing National Holiday it falls back to sub $5000. Plus it doesn't explain why CA is sold out this coming weekend.

Some of the major cities are pretty ok during Golden week. Shanghai empties out nicely :) (Although I agree, I wouldn't want to be catching trains or domestic flights during the peak travel days).

they ran out on us BKK-SYD back in May. full cabin but not everyone was drinking. the words were along the lines of 'we need to keep some for our flight back to BKK' :(

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

So I get an email extending the 145% until 18/9 ... they r really trying hard to tempt me but no ;)
