Aviation museums

Go to where it all began! You get a good taste in the National Air and Space Museum in DC but I just had to go to say I've been to Kittyhawk.

Lot of history in this area, The Outer Banks. Very beautiful beaches and coastline. The driving is superb.

Yes - I wanted to go there but ran out of time and money...
Have done some South Carolina but veered onto the Blue Ridge Parkway so not much of North Carolina....
Next Trip maybe.

Free museum of the 1000013903.jpg New Zealand Air force. Near to Christchurch airport. Well worth a visit.

B52 in the centre of the hanger with everything else around it
The B52s and their refueller aircraft KC135s (I think) were regular visitors to Darwin in the mid 1980s, hence a B52 was donated to the museum. Also of interest was a 75 squadron Mirage fighter that was recovered many years later after flaming out circa 1985, just prior to FA18s came to Darwin

Not sure if this has been mentioned previously, but there is a nice little historical airpark at TRG (Tauranga airport) NZ (was there last week). Some of the exhibits also fly around the airport. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Beijing's aviation museum is unbelievably huge, with hundreds of planes both outside and in a cavernous hangar.

You can board Chairman Mao's private aircraft (attaching my own photos).

Interesting that they’re stripping the paint of OJA at HARS. Getting that repainted will be an interesting exercise.

I never greatly liked that aircraft, as it had flight controls that were quite a bit heavier (in roll) than the rest of the fleet. I had a bit of vendetta against aircraft that were set up that way, but the management response was that the loadings were within the Boeing limits, so it was acceptable. BA on the other hand (as seen on their 767s that we had) set a much finer tolerance for control column loads, thus making the aircraft more or less the same. Different loads make them harder to control, especially in the flare on windy (x-wind) days, when your feel is a big part of the input. Over on the 767 fleet, EAJ, was also a shocker.

We popped into the Aviation Museum at Riga when we were in the Baltics a couple of weeks ago. They have a lot of Soviet era planes, helis and various accoutrements sitting in a field out near the airport. (Cash only - 10 euros pp.) My husband was very keen to see the Mig 25.

So it seems that at Qantas, anything with an A and a J in its name was a shocker??

There are quite a few in the former DDR that I been to. I have mentioned some on here before. One of my favourites is just north of Goerlitz in the far SE of the old DDR.

https://luftfahrtmuseum-rothenburg.de/ and also near by is Cottbus Flugplatzmuseum Cottbus e.V.

The one at Rothenburg (not to be confused with Rothenberg) allows you to sit in some of the planes.

This wasn't a museum, but still a working airport, can't remember where it was! We just happened to drive past. Obviously there was a mix of purely Soviet bases and DDR bases, most of the Soviet stuff was off limits to locals. This I think was a previous Soviet base.
