B789 - worst ever Qantas economy long haul Seats

I do think these new ULH flights such as your SYD/MEL-DFW, PER-LHR, DOH-AKL, AKL-JFK, and all the rest absolutely push the boundaries of what is reasonable in Y. Potentially even more so on ULCC's with potentially tighter pitch. I've certainly been on SYD-DFW v.v, DFW-MEL) and am doing MEL-DFW next month) in J and very much have huge sympathy for the conditions in Y. I may have been able to in my twenties (I did enough tranpacs to LAX in Y back in the 90's and they were really no fun!). Still, people do survive every day. I don't believe for a second QF will offer much "better" in the 350 "Project Sunrise" birds despite what they're saying so far - it's all about economics, and like the 330 seat JQ 787-8's, the back of the bus is... the back of the bus.

I don't know what the solution is since if it was suggested to add x inches of legroom to Y, or even to move to a 8 across config, then you're automatically going to get higher prices to make the flights viable. Unfortunately that's the way it works. So what's the reasonable tradeoff? I don't know.

Perhaps there's a market for a "All PE" configured aircraft/airline for long haul flights. A sort of Air Asia X at a higher price point, but with a far less dense config. Who knows?

My preferred seat on the 787 and other long haul J is the inside aisle which only then has one person to clamber over the top of me instead of two is I took the outside aisle.

I have noticed that when I am in this inner section of the the Dreamliner that I don't get mobile reception on the ground though.

The answer is to simply let the market decide (as you have implied). That provides a choice for discerning customers (so long as govts don't artificially restrict supply, for various pathetic reasons, by denying mainstream airlines additional rights when they apply...).

If someone on here (dissatisfied with Y on all current airlines flying ex AUS) wants to start up and run an airline with lots of pitch and width in Y at a higher price then go for it. But I suspect it will fail because the Y market wants cheap airfares and will endure some discomfort (up to a point). Or make sure you support JAL.
 
QF never offers a competitive Economy product in the market. Among all of the wide body aircrafts that QF has at the moment, 787 is already one of the best, it offers the best seat pitch - 32, yes, AJ has declared it's a very generous seat pitch despite it's a standard seat pitch in other premium airlines such as CX, SQ etc. and don't even mention JL, ANA offers 34 as standard. For the seat width on 787, you will find 99% of them are identical around the world, as long as airline company adopts the 3-3-3 configuration.

SQ indeed now operate A350's SIN-NYC in J/W only configuration (No "Economy")

I think you mean Y, not J ;)

And yes, I noticed that too. I suspect it's the carbon composite frame acting like a Faraday cage.

aww man! I had a feeling SQ had a W only (econ) product offering, but my brain thought back to the A345's doing that route, and I googled and that was all J so I thought I'd imagined that. thanks! :D

Also noticed 787 mobile reception issue - in windows as well as aisles. Annoying to try and get a last minute message off (on QF without wifi).

The order of this was
A340-500 - J + "executive economy" (which pre-dated "premium economy" branding on SQ by many years, it was the only route offering it) -->
A340-500 - all J configuration -->
Pause for 5? years -->
A350-900ULR - J + premium economy (with extra charges for "single seats" in PE at the rear, and of course exit rows).

I had a galaxy S5 that had this issue, After upgrading to an S10 it went away. Something to do with additional Bands apparently.

The issues expressed in this thread are nothing new. Here's a like thread that precedes COVID I it even has mention of Faraday cages :p):

 
Just adding two cents on my most recent and possibly worst ever Qantas economy long haul from Sydney to Dallas on a 757-9. That 9 seat across is a killer - there was so little space that I could barely eat the lacklustre meal because I couldn't move my arms without elbowing my neighbour. The service was interesting as well. I will ensure to check the plane configuration before I book another long haul because this was seriously pokey and unpleasant.
I thoroughly agree with you. I did the domestic leg MEL-PER. I was rubbing shoulders with the pax next to me. No way would I fly Y with Qantas on their 787. Don’t get me started on their meal offering.
