Hi - a friend booked a BA flight in May from LHR to DUB and was picking up a hire car.

BA cancelled his flight and the other choice is to go the night before which means he will have to pay another night accommodation in Belfast (he is driving DUB to BEL) when he has already paid for accommodation in London.

I suspect he has already accepted the change but if he hasn't then what are the options for claiming an extra night's accommodation or is it just bad luck

s under EU Regulations:
  • Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 establishes standard rules on compensation and assistance for passengers in the event of flight cancellations, denied boarding, or long delays. This applies to both scheduled and charter flights:
    • Compensation: EU law entitles passengers to compensation if their flight arrives at the final destination with a delay of at least 3 hours unless the delay was caused by "extraordinary circumstances" (e.g., weather, strikes not organized by the airline's staff). Compensation can range from €250 to €600 depending on the flight distance.

    • Assistance: If a flight is delayed by at least 2 hours, passengers are entitled to aid like meals, refreshments, and accommodation if necessary in case of overnight delays. This includes transport between the airport and the hotel.
    • Re-routing or Refund: Passengers can choose between re-routing under comparable transport conditions at the earliest opportunity or a later date at their convenience or receiving a refund within seven days for the part of the journey not made.

Some parts of 261 do not apply at more than 14 days beforehand.
I realise that it is a good thing you asked about the timing of the flight.

9.1b would come into play

9.1b would come into play

And, as I discovered personally, some parts don't apply when the airline is directed by the airport or the aviation authority, to cancel a number of its flights. (eg, due to forecast weather)

The opening post needs more detail of the exact circumstances.

That is why there is a bin in the photo. I did not realise it until now, but it turned out that the "dear passenger" could later throw that text into the bin for all its worth.

I don't know about that.

But the airlines can have valid reasons to cancel flights without needing to offer the compensation.
Sometime it works sometimes it doesn't depending on the paragraph quoted.

It is for a flight in May this year.

Article 9.1b as posted already comes into play. The airline needs to pay for accommodation. This is not time restricted in the case of cancellation.

Is the flight actually on Aer Lingus metal or BA? There are numerous daily flights between Heathrow and Dublin and as it's May I don't really understand why a same day flight alternative has been provided. If this is just a one sector flight (,(not with connection) then I would not accept the change and see about re booking. Has your friend asked why same day alternative not being provided even on Aer Lingus?
