I caught the 5.45am BNE-EMD a couple of days ago and while the service from the FAs was wonderful (wasn't hard since the flight was empty only 10 PAX) but it was a real pain of a flight since there was an overpowering odour onboard. I am thinking it could have been something to do with the airconditiong system since while we were in the air the smell was alot more subtle compared to when I boarded (literally could not breathe!!!!!!). All I can say is that smell was hellish and hope I don't have endure it on the EMD-BNE for monday :S

My brother flies that flight fortnightly - He's the area manager of JJ Richards - it was probably him :D

Do they have any F-100's on that route. I've found the back end of them smells horribly like vomit on a lot of occasions. Something to do with the aircon freezing up i was told.

Do you think it might have been an APU problem? If it was, it would've smelled a bit like vomit from when the engines were started/air-conditioning was turned on, until after takeoff (getting weaker/stopping later into the flight). For the record, did it happen again on the return flight?

Well it was Alliance Airline's Fokker 100 and i have to say it could well have been a vomit like smell but an APU problem does make sense since it grew weaker after takeoff.. thankfully the return was on Qantas Link's Dash 8 with no pungent repulsive smell lol however the FA did ask me before takeoff if there was an electrical smell where i was sitting that had me abit worried :S

I presume it is what is known as a 'smelly bleed'. Can be due to some slight contaminant in the bleed air line, like oil. The bleed air ducts go to the air con packs, and the cleaned air eventually ends up in the cabin. Normally worse on the ground at high power settings (ie takeoff).
