Hey AFF,

So over Xmas ill be flying MEL-OOL on a J ticket, then BNE-TSV on a saver, and finally TSV-SYD-MEL on a J. Obviously the baggage allowance is different, and while my intention is to pack at saver restrictions I have no idea if I'm going to get gifts etc in QLD.

Any advice here? My initial thought was just to keep my original boarding pass and ask nicely at the counter upon check in if over, but don't want to rely on that. Second thought was just to cancel saver and replace with J but am flying w/ a group and promised I wouldn't ditch them in row 4 for 1 (lost a bet).

Thanks :)

My advice is to buy gifts in TSV, not OOL/BNE :p. As a VFF silver travelling on a Saver fare you'll be allowed to check in 2x23kg for the flight to BNE and I doubt any amount of smiling will help. As they say, your mileage may vary, but 46kg is an epic amount of stuff for a domestic trip.

I might just say no gifts this year... I'm only worried because last year I had to fly back with a toaster, kettle, blender, and few bottles of bubbles and without the J would have been over. Would it make a difference if I allowed my status to upgrade to Gold before the flight? Currently I'm doing my best to delay it till when I want my review date to be.

Also, I travel with lots of shoes.

That's clearly where our habits differ - I do my utmost to travel only with the pair I'm wearing - because they're heavy! But everyone's circumstances are different.

Unfortunately even being gold wouldn't help (without some unpublished flexibility from the agents). The fare type / status level checked baggage matrix is here:

* No single item may exceed 32kg

I don't know what VA's per kg charge for a 23-32kg bag is but that will the key piece of info for you - taking a third bag would mean buying an extra bag on every flight, not just the saver flight.

Perhaps other members can provide some positive anecdotes about checking in overweight baggage.

I'm usually the same but have a few different occasions that call for diff shoes.

Oh well... Unless anyone else has gotten away with it I guess I'll have to figure something else out. Surly postage would be cheaper than excess luggage. Maybe I'll just spread it across the group as carry on.

Thanks for your help.

Problem solved - am upgrading us both to J because of the sales announced this morning $399 BNE-TSV
