Re: The totally off-topic thread

Personally I'd hope proceeds of crime laws would kick in...

Well there's the thing. You can't have it both ways.

People say that her crime was committed in Indonesia so the laws and penalties she faced must be their laws which are way harsher than ours. That's her tough luck.

But Indonesia has no such laws governing profiting from Crime. They are Australian laws.

I do believe that they tried to slap proceeds from Crime laws onto David Hicks... I don't remember what the exact outcome was there although I vaguely remember that he didn't profit.

Edit, and yes, there are Australian laws which affect Australian citizens despite being overseas...

Hicks kept the the money after legal action started and the AG dropped the case.

Since he was never convicted of a crime.

There has been speculation in newspapers that the Indonesian government will help Australia apply proceeds if crime laws on Corby as part of the parole.

They declined to intervene in 2009 over the $260K payment for "my story", given the recent suspension of cooperation I believe it's even less likely they would help.

I'm just reporting speculation in the Murdoch press. Perhaps you might like to tell them about this instead of trying to prove me wrong.

Said Murdoch press also supported my guess:

Now, following the suspension of cooperation over phone-tapping and the boat turn-backs, the Indonesian Government would be even less inclined to consider an Australian request - even if the money was paid directly to an account in Indonesia in Corby's name.

Schapelle Corby set to earn millions for her story, biographer says her release will be a 'complete shock' | News.com.au

When it comes to Indonesia, anything is a guess until it happens.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Schapelle got off very lightly under Indonesian laws. Any other person convicted of the same crime would have had a much more severe punishment, probably no chance of parole.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Rewarded with upwards of $3 million for her crime?

Sad, but true. Certainly not a rare outcome when you look at the other colourful characters that profit from misery.

There was that bloke that likes to chop things...

The bloke in Melbourne that provides dispute resolution services and cranes to the building industry...

That bloke that likes to be called the Wolf of Wall Street...

These people make the Kardashians look like hard workers...

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Well I believe she is guilty and has served an adequate sentence. So, I wish her well in her rehabilitated life, but would prefer never to see or hear anything from her or her immediate family again.

I believe she is guilty too but feel that under Indonesian law she got off quite lightly no doubt due to the relentless media campaign (that she was innocent) plus the high level advocacy the Australian government exerted against the Indonesians.

No doubt the local people would be "fuming" against this parole let alone the light sentence w.r.t to their laws, and now that they are aware she could be making alot of money out of it (remember that the locals earn US$10-20 per day) so if I was her, she'd better remaining hiding for the next 36 months or so, just in case.

Australian media has a lot to answer for in this instance. A bidding war to hear a criminals version of her story.

And Schapelle may well have been innocent at the start but as soon as she took the wrap she was guilty.

She may be out of jail but she has to do at least 2 or 3 years parole and remain in Indonesia.
Let us not forget there are many people in Indonesia, including several high profile Indo. politicians who did not want to see Corby on early release?
She will need to be on her very best behaviour.....As for my take on the whole saga. I wish "team Corby" would go away.....

The late Kerry Packer was her champion early in her trial. He made sure his media empire cast her as some innocent so he could profit from it.

My feelings exactly.

The only thing I would add is that Mercedes, despite being the bogan from hell, gave Schappelle great, consistent support. She would still be in jail without her. Of the entire family, Mercedes is the only one who sought to make a decent life for herself

Easy to sit back and type from behind your keyboard and say she is guilty and she deserved the sentence because she perjured herself, but until you are in that situation yourself, faced with the option of being young and doing time or being free yet seeing your father rot in prison, you cannot possibly know what she went through.

Blood is always thicker than water and those of you casting assertions should just ask what you would do for your father, mother, brother... Etc. would you die for them? I would!

Whatever your opinions of her father are, they are really irrelevant. She grew up with him, and she loved him, and would do anything for him, that in itself is hardly a crime.,

I'm not Australian, and I didn't live here when she was arrested, I know very very little of this story, so the only opinion I have is "what would I do for my father" that basically answers it for me..

Oh well, in the end if that's what she did, then fine. She paid the price for it. Why are we heralding her as a martyr is beyond me.

Even if I were to die for one of my family, I do not expect anything for it, except possibly that the person who I gave the life for kept living for the sake of being given a life.

I guess some people would read what I said and say that I'm someone who never learned what sympathy meant and should go drive myself face first into a wall........
