I feel that rather than trying to increase FF membership numbers and spend on advertising, that same money should be spent on upgrading the interiors/seats on the A330-300's, or better still open up some new Intl routes. FF's will come on their own accord if there are enough routes for them to fly!

You do realise you are talking about two different entities here, its a bit like saying Jetstar should stop advertising to fund the upgrades! Its been a long time since QFF was about frequent flying as its main revenue source, something of a point made in this very ad!

That ad is quite underwhelming. And is very Sydney-centric.

I truly do wonder how some campaigns get given a green light.

What's the maximum file size limit? I want to upload the photos but it says they're too large. How much should I compress?

Maybe try resizing down to about 800 x 600 size, then resaving (save as) a JPG file. For some reason, tends to make the file size go right down!

Must admit, I was somewhat bemused at the whole lead up to the special 'screening', since it is only about 30 seconds after all. Interesting and creative concept nonetheless, and a bit of fun too - there we go: 'earning points makes fun'!

Speaking of which, I had a marvellous few days in Sydney, so many thanks once again to RedRoo(s) and the folks at QF for this opportunity. It was also great to meet other AFFers, and to realise that there really are other travel 'nerds' out there! Hope to see you all again, perhaps at one of those OzFests someday...

Official Trip Report (part 1)

THE OFFICIAL CURIOSITY MARKETING CAMPAIGN LAUNCH TRIP REPORT (part 1 of 2)

Initially, myself along with Catweazle and straitman were meant to travel together on QF434 , the 1pm MEL-SYD service. As straitman noted at the time, this service was cancelled with SMSes going out at just after 10am. Amadeus globally went down which no doubt made things difficult for the QF staff. Thankfully, I avoided straitman's experience of spending 20 minutes waiting on the phone to arrange an alternative flight - after a few minutes on hold, I received a call on my other phone from a Qantas lady asking me if the 2pm service was OK. This turned out well as I was running behind schedule, and unable to meet the others in the MEL J lounge early.

QF438 was delayed slightly due to mechanical issues, but the engineers quickly resolved those problems. Received the customary 'welcome back Mr Isochronous' at the gate and when first boarding the plane. However, I was most surprised when during snack service the lady who handed me my apple addressed me by name; clearly someone had done her homework and read the WP list pre-flight. This partly made up for my experience on the Tuesday QF30 HKG-MEL where no greeting of any kind was received.

Made my way to the Sofitel from SYD via public transport, using the bus to Mascot Station trick to avoid paying the station access fee at Domestic. A pleasant walk was had from St James Station down Macquarie St to the Sofitel Wentworth. Check-in went seamlessly and had a few moments to catch up on phone calls and other work before realising it was after 5pm, and soon time for the function. Contact was made with straitman, who was with the whole group of AFF guests (minus AirKat) at the bar outside Customs House. I understand that JessicaTam was there earlier before heading back to SYD to take a flight to DRW to position for a DRW-SYD-PER-KTH JASA. After walking down to Circular Quay and realising I had left my phone in the room, I dashed back to retrieve it before being able to meet the rest, not wanting to be running around Circular Quay shouting forum handles at strangers.

Once we all met at Customs House, it was off to the Museum of Contemporary Art for the launch function. Batesy as the one Sydney local in the group of Melburnians waiting (significance excepted, who hails from CBR) led the way.

After a short while of mingling and eventually meeting AirKat, QFF CEO Lesley Grant addressed the evening, and then hit the button to play three versions of the TVC: a 60-second full version, and two 15-second short versions. QFF partners such as Woolworths, the banks, David Jones, Sofitel, etcetera benefit from exposure in the ad.

We were also fortunate to hear from the head of Droog5, the advertising agency who came up with the concept for the campaign. Apparently the idea was the same as the one they had at the beginning with few if any changes, a rarity in the industry.

A unique rendition of 'I Still Call Australia Home' from Kirk Pengilly and someone else, who's name I do not recall:

It wasn't just AFFers along with Red Roo and Qantas executives in attendance. Some of Qantas' celebrity friends attended too:

That's Miss Laura Csortan on the left, a former Miss Congeniality in Miss Universe, Miss Australia, and a semi-finalist at Miss World. Perhaps most famously, the girl from Adelaide who turned down The Donald. On the right is world champion surfer, Layne Beachley.

THE OFFICIAL CURIOSITY MARKETING CAMPAIGN LAUNCH TRIP REPORT (part 2 of 2)

Did I mention that the view from the rooftop of MoCA is rather stunning?

Branded candle covers in red hue were a nice touch, as was the Opera House, as always.

Perhaps the most fun was had when it was discovered that the man responsible for building Curiosity was in attendance. The campaign uses a 70% scale replica of the real NASA rover, which according to Lesley Grant will be touring shopping centres, airports etc during the course of the marketing campaign. straitman was kindly allowed to handle the controls of Curiosity, and move the two cameras around - much to the amusement of those standing around the rover chatting and taking photos. I also later had a go playing with the controls.

After straitman had finished playing with Curiosity, and myself as well, the night was nearly over. Before we let the staff pack Curiosity up, the group of lucky AFF winners (minus AirKat, who by that point had left) posed with Kate, a Manager in the QF Marketing team and one of the people behind Red Roo.

After the function finished, we wandered around The Rocks and made our way to the Lord Nelson for beers. While photos weren't taken during this part, I can confirm that good conversation ensued over pizza, wedges and beer. Catdrewzle and myself also ordered an apple pie, which was magnificent, prompting straitman to subsequently order his own.

I'll let others discuss their experiences on their return flights. Although we did learn that despite being told in the QF emails that the tickets were "non upgradeable", apparently straitman managed to snare a points upgrade to J on the way back. Having noticed that we were all ticketed in Y, I was hopeful for 20 SCs each way, but alas, persual of my QFF Activity Statement shows both flights crediting as 0 - not even giving me one of the 4 ~ necessary to requalify for status (not that I'm taking less than 4 flights this year, but 40SC toward retaining WP would have been nice!)

I was initially ticketed on QF441 SYD-MEL, the 1430 service. Upon check-in the computer offered me the chance to take the 1400 or 1415 services instead. Wanting to get home a bit earlier without sacrificing valuable J lounge time, I opted for the 1415. This was again a non-refurbished 763. However, this turned out to not get me home any earlier, as the 1430 was cancelled due to technical issues. Hence our flight waited to take as many of the 1430 flight passengers as possible, and naturally, my WP shadow evaporated.

I made sure to drop by the MEL J lounge after touch down to take advantage of arrivals access as a WP (something I had never done before), have a cup of tea, and enjoy the buffalo chicken wings on offer.

Overall the trip was an enjoyable experience, and was my first opportunity to meet fellow AFFers and senior QF staff. Many thanks to Red Roo and the marketing team at QF for running this competition and flying most of us up at their expense to attend!

Re: Official Trip Report (part 1)

Thanks Isochronous I enjoyed that read.

Nice writeup, and thanks for the Mascot tip - perhaps, you could share more of your "tips" with us.

Re: Official Trip Report (part 2)

Isochronous, has not left much else for the rest of us to say.

I had Layne Beachley a little bemused at on point because each time she posed for a picture in front of Curiosity a piece of it would move. Eventually she worked out what was happening and we had a good laugh about it later.

It was a great night and a pleasure to meet 5 new AFFers. Unfortunately I still did not meet AirKat who managed to sneak in and out below the radar. (so to speak)

A big thank you to Lesley Grant who introduced me to the the man controlling Curiosity and to Kate Elliott, Stephanie Tully and all the Red Roo team. Also thanks to Ana Vujica for booking the flights and accommodation even if we did manage to crash Amadeus and get a few flights cancelled. I was fortunate to be able to get a one hour earlier flight home that with train/bus connections allowed me to get home two hours earlier.

Re: Official Trip Report (part 2)

Looked like a great night.

Anyone get CL access on the flights home?

Re: Official Trip Report (part 2)

Great to meet some fellow AFF members. Had an excellent evening with some great people.
Thanks to QFF, Red Roo and the other loyalty team members I met on the night.
