I know i'm late to the party, but that was an amazing TR.
Glad you are fan of Brazil. Quite a wonderful country. And as you said, english is not widely spoken. But i found most young (less than 30) speak a few words and really want to learn! Engage them and you have a friend for life.
Your pics of Santos Dumont brought back memories. Caught the shuttle from CGH to SDU, was lucky enough to have that incredible approach into Rio.
Your dramas in the US are not surprising tbh. But you did get seriously unlucky. I've never travelled much in North America in the throws of winter though.
