Best Mobile options for KUL/HKG

I will be off to KUL and HKG shortly.

Previously I have always let my phone roam, however this time I am looking to keep the costs down.
I will be needed a micro-sim (iPhone 4) so;

• What would be the best options for KUL and HKG? Am I able to get a global sim for both, or would it be easiest to get a prepaid sim in both countries?
• What is the dummies guide to keeping costs down? Not so sure about all the VOIP etc, as I have never used VOIP to divert mobile calls etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check out one2free in HK for prepaid...the only one I've found that gives a 7 day unlimited data option

Plus the network sh!ts all over 3, smart one, Pccw etc

You should not leave home without the “smart phone” app Viber installed for “free” calls and messages (including pics) over WiFi or 3G.

It has worked well for me domestically and internationally, including the middle of the ocean.

However, there have been a few occasions when it has not performed so well for which I really do not have an authoritative answer.

This has probably been because of a poor connection at one or both ends.

Also it appears some hot spots in airports and shopping centres have somehow restricted the use of VOIP (such as Viber) communications over their networks.

For Hong Kong, I have had the best experiences with 3 - whilst it is the parent company of the old 3 in Australia, the network in Hong Kong (their home territory) is excellent. Data is cheap (a few dollars a day for unlimited).
