* Try and be a local. Don't eat at a restaurant just outside of a famous attraction - get away from that a few streets (at least) and find much better prices. Same goes for pubs/hotels.
To truly get great value, jump on public transport (stay safe though!) and go to an average suburb a few kilometres away. It is amazing how much cheaper things can be.
* Get a feel for the layout of the town you're visiting. Why catch a cab/taxi for a km or so when you could easily walk. And on the same note, get a good grip on the taxi costs for a town, and ensure you don't get ripped off when leaving the airport, or particularly around tourist sites.
