Best Tips for saving money overseas (and win a prize worth $300)

* Try and be a local. Don't eat at a restaurant just outside of a famous attraction - get away from that a few streets (at least) and find much better prices. Same goes for pubs/hotels.

To truly get great value, jump on public transport (stay safe though!) and go to an average suburb a few kilometres away. It is amazing how much cheaper things can be.

* Get a feel for the layout of the town you're visiting. Why catch a cab/taxi for a km or so when you could easily walk. And on the same note, get a good grip on the taxi costs for a town, and ensure you don't get ripped off when leaving the airport, or particularly around tourist sites.

Congratulations to drewbles!!

As you can imagine, it was really difficult coming with only 1 winner. We received over 40 entries, all of which were excellent and worthy of a prize. Unfortunately we only had one prize to give away. But I guess we are all winners in the end, as we can all save by using these great tips.

Thank you for all those for so generously sharing their tips. Thanks also to our moderators for assisting me in the extremely difficult task of picking a winner.

And thanks again to Australia Post for sponsoring this competition.

(I am now going to close this thread as the competition is over. Feel free to start a new thread to discus these tips or any other ideas you may have.)
