Best travel apps

What app do people use for translations and trying to have conversations in a foreign language? Is there a good one?

I have used ITranslate and Google Translate. What do you recommend?

CMT is a terrible app. It's only pro is that it feeds direct from Amadeus, so useful for checking bookings (although useless for adding non-Amadeus bookings like AA).

I use TripIt, but CMT to check things like ticketing status. It would be nice if TripIt could talk to Amadeus directly.
I LOVE Tripit... what a shame we can't check ticketing status

There is an earlier reference to Sabre and Amadeus bookings. Some apps favour either. Can someone explain the differences between these booking systems and which apps are specific to each

Different airlines and travel companies use the different systems. I believe that American Airlines uses Sabre and Qantas uses Amadus. I have booked flights with points using AA but flying Qantas. AA had a different booking reference to Qantas. Checkmytrip uses Amadeus therefore u can check etix and flight details on Checkmytrip. Qantas didn't have the etix number on the booking, so i used the Qantas ref number on checkmytrip and was able to see the etix number on there. It is really handy.

Are there any apps that check pricing of flexible hotel bookings and alerts you if the price decreases?

I booked a flexible rate at an Accor property and have cancelled and rebooked a few times as the advertised rate decreases.

I recall TripIt Pro did it for US flights.

Hotels don't like such things and endeavour to prevent it.

There was an attempt with Hilton and a tool called "StayAngel", but it became like whack-a-mole for the developers. (Ever wondered why Hilton logins often bring up "I'm not a robot" recaptures.)

An update from the SMH

I will check out a couple of different ones
No TripIt! Thats my favourite. So easy to populate and keeps track of flights and gates too. Even cruises and the ports and times are populated automatically.

does cars, hotels, shows, restaurants, tours etc also!

Or Flighty! TripIt feeds flight info into Flighty and its the best for info about your flight, timings, gates, delays etc etc.

Or XE for currency conversion.

Anyone else using TripCase? I’ve been using it (Free) for years in parallel with TripIt (Free) for realtime updates on gates, delays etc (even though it’s primarily for Sabre, it works for Amadeus and others).

It also has some basic* seat map functionality but that seems to have been “enhanced” for the last couple of weeks…

I can’t find any reports online but hope it’s not going the way of EF and lack of investment in updates?….😳

*non-sabre seatmaps are pretty flaky for showing all free seats but it does show all cabins in one view - which can be interesting.

Vale TripCase….

I received an email overnight titled….

TripCase app is sunsetting April 1, 2025

Please be aware the TripCase app will be sunsetting. Starting on April 1, 2025 you will no longer be able to access and use the app. Sabre will delete all TripCase-related trip and traveler data as part of the decommissioning process. You are free to choose an alternate itinerary management app.”

Pity, I found it one of the better Free apps for flight delays, cancellations, terminal / gate info and bag carousel - it usually updated before the airline apps.

TripIt (Free) doesn’t do any of those…

Tripit Pro does. You can sometimes pick up promotions to get Pro for about $25 per year

Worthwhile if you travel a bit.
I had a freebie TripIt Pro for a little while. TBH, it didn’t appear to work as well as TripCase so I’ve never bothered paying for it. I do however use TripIt to track and mange trips. I might see if I can get a trial Pro version and see how it goes on my next big trip.

On recent trips it has been bang on with notifications of gate changes, delays and so on, well before you got anything from the relevant airline app (if at all). You usually get the text advising which luggage belt while you are still taxiing to the gate.

I figure if we don't support these services they will all go the way of Tripcase. What was their business model out of interest?

Very annoying.... I have used both the App and web version and found it very good especially when there is a change of gate or flight delay. Guess I will check out TripIt....

The same as a lot of the others, and depending on the trip - Windy, relevant cruise & flight apps, Viator & Trip Advisor, Booking.com, XE, Flight Radar, Expert Flyer, Marine Traffic, banking & Wise, Grab, train timetables, Google Maps, Translate & Lens etc etc.

I much prefer using web pages for planning over using apps, but we leave the laptop at home nowadays.

Some good suggestions already, instead of reposting them Ill add apps that I find useful when I travel overseas. My trips are mostly for work and I'm usually away a month or so.

First AirVisual. It measures air pollutants and since I always get a blocked nose, keeping track on the pollutants really help. I also like to go for a jog and prefer to open windows (if possible) at hotels and thats soemthing I avid when levels are unhealthy. This small change has really helped me avoid colds etc on my 'roadtrips'.

I also tend to use Fing. Fing is a free networkmapper and scanner. I use it to do a quick scan of the local network when I stay in a hotel etc, just check what devices that are connected etc. Helps with security and while Ive never discovered anything in Se Asia I have had some surprises in India, East Africa and the Middle east.
